JESUS SOLILOQUY EASTER VII MAY 7 & 8, 2016 AS WE GATHER Sometimes on TV or in a play a character will walk away from the scene and speak directly to the audience. These moments give a clear window into the character s heart and soul. They reveal what s important to that character. The little speech the character gives is called a soliloquy. Today in our Gospel reading we hear Jesus soliloquy. On the very night He was betrayed, Jesus tells us what is most important to Him. He reveals His heart for unity around His Word. Come, prepare your heart to hear what Jesus says to you today. PREPARATION HYMN A HYMN OF GLORY LET US SING LSB 493:1-3 INVOCATION P=Presider; C=Congregation P In the name of our almighty and most merciful God C Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Alleluia, amen! P Come! Enter in! C Let us gather around God s Word and gifts. P Come, join together! C Let us unite around what our God has told us. CONFESSION & FORGIVENESS ROMANS 3:10 & PHILIPPIANS 2:6 P And what has our God told us? C There is none righteous no, not one. We have all together become corrupt. There is none who seeks God no, not one. 1

P We have become united in our total depravity. C We are sinful from birth, sinful from the time our mothers conceived us. P Our sins have separated us from You, O God. In that separation, so often we have united around things that are sinful. C O Lord, have mercy on me and forgive me. SILENCE FOR PERSONAL CONFESSION P God never desired that we be separated from Him. We could never go to Him, so He came to us. Jesus didn t consider equality with His Father a thing to be grasped, but made Himself nothing, taking on human nature. He lived the life we never have, earning that uniting with His Father. And when He died, God made Him who had no sin to become sin for us so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God. God has united us with Himself! As a called and ordained servant of Christ and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Alleluia! Our Immanuel is with us! He has brought us to His side! Amen! WORD PSALM 61:3&5-8 INTROIT ANTIPHON: 61:1 P Hear my cry, O God, listen to my prayer; C for You have been my refuge, a strong tower against the enemy. P For You, O God, have heard my vows; You have given me the heritage of those who fear Your name. C Prolong the life of the king; may his years endure to all generations! P May he be enthroned forever before God; appoint steadfast love and faithfulness to watch over him! C So will I ever sing praises to Your name as I perform my vows day after day. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. P Hear my cry, O God, listen to my prayer; C for You have been my refuge, a strong tower against the enemy. 2

KYRIE LORD, HAVE MERCY MARK 10:47 LSB 204 C Lord, have mercy; Christ, have mercy; Lord, have mercy. GLORIA GLORY TO GOD IN THE HIGHEST LUKE 2:14 JOHN 1:29 LSB 204 C To God on high be glory, and peace to all the earth; goodwill from God in heaven proclaimed at Jesus birth! We praise and bless You, Father; Your holy name we sing our thanks for Your great glory, Lord God, our heav nly King. To You, O sole-begotten, the Father s Son, we pray; O Lamb of God, our Savior, You take our sins away. Have mercy on us, Jesus; receive our heartfelt cry, where you in pow r are seated at God s right hand on high For You alone are holy; You only are the Lord. Forever and forever, be worshiped and adored; You with the Holy Spirit alone are Lord Most High in God the Father s glory. Amen! our glad reply. PRAYER OF THE DAY P Lord Jesus, You came to bring us unity with You and the Father. C Point us to the source of that unity: Your Word and bring us ever closer to You for You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Alleluia, amen! HISTORY ACTS 1:12-26 THE APOSTLES LOOK TO GOD S WORD TO DISCOVER WHAT THEY SHOULD DO AS THEY AWAIT THE HOLY SPIRIT. 12 Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day s journey away. 13 And when they had entered, they went up to the upper room, where they were staying, Peter and John and James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot and Judas the son of James. 14 All these with one accord were devoting themselves to prayer, together with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and his brothers. 15 In those days Peter stood up among the brothers (the company of persons was in all about 120) and said, 16 Brothers, the Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke beforehand by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus. 17 For he was numbered among us and was allotted his share in this ministry. 18 (Now this man acquired a field with the reward of his wickedness, and falling headlong he burst open in the middle and all his bowels gushed out. 19 And it became known to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the field was called in their own language Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood.) 20 For it is written in the Book of Psalms, May his camp become desolate, and let there be no one to dwell in it ; and Let another take his office. 21 So one of the men who have accompanied us during all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, 22 beginning from the baptism of John until the day when he was taken up from us one of these men must become with us a witness to his resurrection. 23 And they put forward two, Joseph called Barsabbas, who was also called Justus, and Matthias. 24 And they prayed and said, You, Lord, who know the hearts of all, show which one of these two you have chosen 25 to take the place in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place. 26 And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias, and he was numbered with the eleven apostles. P This is the Word of our Lord. C Thanks be to God! 4

GRADUAL ADAPTED FROM MATTHEW 28:7 & HEBREWS 2:7 & PSALM 8:6 P Christ has risen from the dead. C [God the Father] has crowned Him with glory and honor. P He has given Him dominion over the works of His hands; C He has put all things under His feet. PROPHECY REVELATION 22:1 6&12 20 IN HEAVEN AT LAST, AFTER THIS TIME IN BETWEEN, WE WILL FIND PERFECT UNITY WITH GOD. 1 Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb 2 through the middle of the street of the city; also, on either side of the river, the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit each month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. 3 No longer will there be anything accursed, but the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will worship him. 4 They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. 5 And night will be no more. They will need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever. 6 And he said to me, These words are trustworthy and true. And the Lord, the God of the spirits of the prophets, has sent his angel to show his servants what must soon take place. 12 Behold, I am coming soon, bringing my recompense with me, to repay each one for what he has done. 13 I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end. 14 Blessed are those who wash their robes, so that they may have the right to the tree of life and that they may enter the city by the gates. 15 Outside are the dogs and sorcerers and the sexually immoral and murderers and idolaters, and everyone who loves and practices falsehood. 16 I, Jesus, have sent my angel to testify to you about these things for the churches. I am the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star. 17 The Spirit and the Bride say, Come. And let the one who hears say, Come. And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who desires take the water of life without price. 5

18 I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book, 19 and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his share in the tree of life and in the holy city, which are described in this book. 20 He who testifies to these things says, Surely I am coming soon. Amen. Come, Lord Jesus! P This is the Word of our Lord. C Thanks be to God! VERSE LSB 205 PLEASE STAND C Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. These things are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. HOLY GOSPEL JOHN 17:20-26 JESUS PRAYS FOR UNITY FOR ALL WHO FOLLOW HIM. P The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the 17 th chapter. C Glory to You, O Lord. 20 I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, 21 that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22 The glory that you have given me I have given to them, that they may be one even as we are one, 23 I in them and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me. 24 Father, I desire that they also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am, to see my glory that you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world. 25 O righteous Father, even though the world does not know you, I know you, and these know that you have sent me. 26 I made known to them your name, and I will continue to make it known, that the love with which you have loved me may be in them, and I in them. P This is the Gospel of our Lord. C Praise to You, O Christ. PLEASE BE SEATED 6

APOSTLES CREED C I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Christian: the ancient text reads catholic, meaning the whole Church as it confesses the wholeness of Christian doctrine. 8
