THE WEEKLY MESSENGER 1358 South Lake Drive Lexington, SC 29073 Week of September 17, 2017 The parable of the workers in the vineyard ticks me off. Does it bother you? The owner of the vineyard hires laborers at different times during the day. They work different amounts of time but at the end of the day those who worked the least get paid the same as those who worked the most. The latter are not amused. What does Jesus want us to know? The 16 th Sunday after Pentecost Bible Study: Losing Moses on the Freeway: The 10 Commandments in America 7pm on Thursday come even if you did not read the book. Lutherans and Roman Catholics follow the numbering system for the Commandments championed by the early Jews and St. Augustine. Episcopalians, Presbyterians, and Reformed churches follow Jean Calvin s numbering which reflects the Septuagint (Greek translation of the Old Testament). We need that preface because this week we will consider what other Christians think of as the 2 nd Commandment: You shall not make for yourself a grave image. Hedges writes, We are burdened by household gods, no longer made of clay, but all promising to fulfill us. Come think about the idols we have made and serve and how they lead to death.
