You can express many emotions though dance movements. The Buddhist dancers have taken their movements to an exciting new level, through the Buddhist Goddess Guanyin. There is a story behind each dance. In ancient times there was King that had 3 beautiful daughters. Each daughter respected their King, but the youngest daughter was devoted to Buddha. His daughter wanted to become a Buddhist nun. The king destroyed all of the temples in hope that his younger daughter would be deterred. The gods were not pleased with this action and punished the King with a disease. The only cure was for a close relative to create a medicine made of their hands and eyes. No one was willing to sacrifice themselves to help their King... except the King's youngest daughter. She gladly gave her sight and her hands to create a cure and the King was saved. The gods saw this sacrifice and were saddened. They must correct this situation. They gave this youngest daughter a thousand arms with infinite sight in the palm of the hands. This goddess was called Guanyin - the female Buddha. (cont on p3)

AAA Im ports 407-884-0078 April 2007 Page 3 (cont from p1) This old chinese fairy tale is reenacted by a dance group consisting of 12 ladies and 9 men. They are dressed in the traditional clothing of ancient India royalty. Their arms create an illusion of a thousand hands with a thousand all-seeing eyes. I think that the dance group did a fantastic job in creating the likeness of the Buddhist Goddess Guanyin. By the way, this was a very special dance group. All of the members are deaf and mute! This presents an unusual problem. Since music is the soul of the dance, how do we convey the music, the sounds and rhythm, to the dancers? First, the dancers must experience the beat of the music. They lay on the floor to feel the rhythm. A sign language teacher (signer) is present to intepret the music, line by line, measure by measure. Second, the dancers must learn and memorize all of the movements of each dance. Then, they must coordinate all of their dance movements with the music... not an easy task. The signer's task is to convey the music to the dancers as they perform the piece. They spent an entire year practicing the dance and movements. I think they are amazing. This dance group has performed all over the world. They are the China Disabled Person's Performing Art Troupe. Alicia
