March 30 - April 5, 2013 MAMBALAM TIMES Page 5 TAMIL CINEMA 75 - A LOOK BACK By RANDOR GUY TAMIL CINEMA AND MUSIC - 50 The production office of Kalamegam was situated in a bungalow on Sir Desikachari Road with an entrance on Luz Church Road in Mylapore. It was known as Banker Narayana Iyer Bungalow. The producers were Madurai Dandapani Films and Salem Mohini Pictures and the bosses were music-lovers and fans of Rajaratnam. Dungan found Rajaratnam warm and friendly. When he was sober he was fine and took direction well with interest, but when he was lit he could not be controlled and proved a nuisance and pest on the set. As he was a big gun, people treated him like some kind of god! As he did not know English, I had to communicate with him through my assistants P. S. Chettiar and S. G. Iyer. However when he was sober he would apologize for his unruly conduct. I also found that he was very fond of women! But then who is not? Dungan told this writer in 1994. As the hero Rajaratnam had to sing and he did. Quite a many songs! They were in ragas, Shuddhasaveri, Hindustani Kapi, Hamsanandhi, Behag, Nadhanamakriya, Ananda Bhairavi, Kalyani, Hindolam, Thodi, Kaanada and Shanmughapriya. The music was composed by the Harmonium Master R. S. Chinnaiah and lyrics were by the famed Tamil poet, scholar, social activist and all, Puratchi Kavingnar Bharathidasan of Pondicherry. One of the members of the orchestra of this film was the later day noted violinist, Madras V. Govindaswamy Naicker. During the 1930s and the early 1940s, he worked regularly in films as an instrumentalist before he found his feet in the world of classical Carnatic music. As Rajaratnam was a living legend as a nagaswaram genius, he had to play the instrument in the film since the producers felt that the viewers would expect him to do so. Therefore the film had a scene in which the poet went round the village playing nagaswaram! The real Kavi Kalamegam would certainly turn in his grave but nobody cared! As Alfred Hitchcock is reported to have said, Ingrid, it s only a movie! N. S. Krishnan played the accompanying otthu ( the drone ) which he had learnt earlier. As Dungan put it, He played with perfection without losing his breath. Rajaratnam paid him high compliments and offered Krishnan that job in his team! Dungan told this writer that Rajaratnam sought perfection in his singing and insisted on many takes at the recording sessions. Besides perfection in the rendering of the tunes and ragas, he was equally keen about his diction and accent of the high-flown, jaw-breaking Tamil lyrics of a leading poet like Bharathidasan. In the credit titles of the film and song-book, the hero was mentioned as Akhila India Nathaswara Vidwan T. N. Rajaratnam. Technically the film was good, according to its director. A sequence in which a village is swept away in a sand storm as willed by Kalamegam was shot on Elliot s Beach. Dungan erected sets at great expense and staged the sand storm using giant fans and propellers. It was quite a feat to achieve in 1938-1939 when there were hardly any technical facilities to shoot such scenes in Madras. Released in 1940, Kalamegam disappointed moviegoers of South India. In spite of the nagaswaram maestro, Elllis R. Dungan s technical wizardry and all, the film failed to draw crowds. People did not like Rajaratnam singing and they felt that he should stick to his nagaswaram in which he had no equals. The film lost heavily and Rajaratnam lost hopes of making more films. He went back to his nagaswaram and continued to scale more peaks of success. During this period, spurred by Rajaratnam s film, another great nagaswaram vidwan, Thiruvengadu Subramania Pillai, announced a film to be produced by him with himself as the hero. But it did not take off beyond a few ads. (To be continued) REQUEST TO READERS! Please help us to serve you better! SADANAND Having admitted defeat after a 65-year war against good old fiery summer in my adopted city of Madras, I escaped to the less lethal Bengaluru to cool my body and fool the unknown devil - climate - which outrivals the political ethos of good old India that is a lunatic asylum of myriad tongues thoughts, Cascas, Kasabs, Gurus and the many unhanged countrymen of good old India that I sailed into just after Hitler with his tooth-brush moustache awoke one bad morning in Germany and shouted Kill all the suckers. My father, who was working in Nairobi in the British Emperor s Postal Service as the P.A. to the Postmaster General, packed off his family of five by a ship named Esipingo. It sailed from Mombasa to Madras via Colombo for some mysterious reason, while Bombay was easier and nearer India than Colombo, unless the shipping company wanted to fleece the escapees. Hitler had been born mad, but it gave me the chance to visit Colombo of which I remember seeing Buddha idols or statues by the hundreds. All the present day killers, except the scions of good old Ravanan, would not have been born then. We bought two replicas of black elephants carved in wood before we left the harbour to continue our journey to Madras. I still have one gifted by my sister to remind me always of the elephentine folly of Rulers of Ceylon. Any lurking doubt whether Hitler or the direct descendents of Ravanan deserved the Order of the Devil award was dissolved yesterday when, on Neethi s home-theatre DVD, we saw Maniratnam s all time classic Kannathil Muthamittaal, supplemented by a Channel-4 documentary film named Srilanka s Killing Fields depicting the true Hitlerian happenings of very recent times that would have shamed a beastly coffle of Ghengis Khan, Timor, Hitler and barbarians of the ilk of Idi Amin. Channel-4 takes the cake. Protruding tree trunk poses danger By Our Staff Reporter A leaning avenue tree on the road margin at the junction of Nair Road and Raman Street (T. Nagar) was cut long ago. Domestic workers protest against exploitation Domestic worker representatives from different parts of Chennai including those attached to Domestic Workers Welfare Association (T. Nagar) took part in a protest outside Government Guest House, Anna Salai, on March 27 demanding better work benefits. A minimum wage of Rs. 50 per hour, weekly-offs, notice before termination of service, paid holidays and medical benefits were some of the demands made. Talking to reporters, Clara (State Coordinator for Tamilnadu Domestic Workers Federation) said that domestic employees are exploited in many ways and overworked. She handed over copies of memorandum with the demands to the State Labour Minister, Secretary to the Labour Department and Commissioner of Labour. Similar protests will be held in the coming weeks to highlight the plight of the workers, she added. General Hospital offers free treatment to stroke patients Government General Hospital (opposite Central Station) is providing free thrombolysis treatment (which usually costs around Rs. 1 lakh) to patients who have suffered stroke. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Vendors construct unauthorized compound wall Sir, I am a resident of Ramanathan Street (T. Nagar) and Secretary of our Residents Association. Annai Satya Bazaar is located in a narrow bylane between Ramanathan Street and Ranganathan Street (T. Nagar). The traders in the bazaar are doing a roaring business and the lane is usually crowded. The rear portion of the houses on our street (Ramanathan Street) adjoins Satya Bazaar and most of them also have a gate on this side. So these houses have a dual advantage of having access both from its front side on Ramanathan Street and also from the rear side on the bylane. Following the opening of Satya Bazzar, the residents are not regular in using the access on the bylane. On March 20, without any official permission or notice to the residents, the traders of Satya Bazzar started constructing a compound wall, thereby blocking our access to the bylane. Despite several objections raised by our Association, the traders did not relent and went ahead with the construction. Sir, At a time when the doctors fee and the cost of medicines take a heavy toll in the budget of a common man, our own Chennai Corporation, probably knowing very well that laughter is a good The Association then approached the Zonal Officer, Zone 10 (Chennai Corporation) who deputed one of his inspectors for verification the next day. Even though he gave oral orders to stop the work, the vendors continued the construction. The Association then filed a complaint at the local police station. The construction of the compound wall is illegal and it encroaches on public space. Since the sewer lines/manholes are located close to the already existing compound wall, construction of another wall would prevent CMWSSB from undertaking desilting/repair work. Further, the pathway to Satya Bazaar is already narrow, and the construction of a second wall will make it still narrower, and, in case of any untoward incident taking place, there could be a heavy toll, as the bazaar is most of the time overcrowded. We appeal to the Corporation to take immediate steps to stop this illegal construction and restore the rights of the residents of our street. M. Basheer, Secretary, Ramanathan Street Residents Association Street name boards aplenty with spelling mistakes medicine, provides a recipe that too free of cost, to keep people laughing. One just needs to take a look at street name boards and observe the funny spelling mistakes to have a hearty laugh. Sample this: Soundararajan Street is misspelt as Sounarjan Street at its one end and as Soundarjan Street at the other. Motilal Street is written as Modhilal Street and Dhandapani Street as Thandabani Street. V. S. Jayaraman, 31, Motilal Street, T. Nagar
