Pastor s Letter Dear Members and Friends of B.C.U.M.C. Happy New Year! May God fill you and your family with His renewing Spirit and guiding Word! We were so blessed with true Christmas blessings in December! Our beautiful Christmas Cantata, Shining on This Night offered not only the best music in the world but also the opportunity to serve our neighbors in need. The night s free will donation was sent to Shepherd s Gate to support the ministry for battered women and children. Thanks to all those who contributed for this memorable night: (1) our choir members, director Alivia Logan, pianist Greg Pacquer and orchestra members; (2) We also appreciate United Methodist Women for the snacks in fellowship time afterward; (3) and all those who came to be there to give thanks to God for sending His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ. We were so excited to have Christmas Party for HOPE HOUSE FAMILIES. Our wonderful ministers belonging to VOYAGERS (a fellowship group for 60 and over) had planned this event for over six months. Around 50 clients of HOPE HOUSE came to enjoy the party. They enjoyed the Christmas Play offered by our children and youths. Our string band led a Sing-A-Long time with Christmas carols at the beginning and the end. Kids enjoyed several crafts and arts as well as delicious and beautiful cookies. Each child received a bag of gifts while each family got one big bag of food as they left. Our member Horace Gipson brought his team to take family photos for free for all those who wanted to have one. Several families told us that it was their first family picture ever taken. One family had 7 members. Others had 6 or 5. They were so happy as they saw their first time ever family picture! Voyagers and all the other helpers were inspired as they saw big smiles on their faces. We all felt that it was the true Christmas moment! Our hearts were filled with gratitude and joy for the immeasurable blessing God had given to us. As we welcome the New Year, I pray that our hearts and minds be open more than ever to listen to God and follow His wisdom and guidance. We will have a time of getting together as a church on the last Sunday of January. You are all invited to come to ALL CHURCH POTLUCK on January 29th Sunday at 11:45 pm (right after worship). We will have a potluck lunch and an opportunity to talk about our church growth opportunities. It will be our time together for getting to know one another as well as for brainstorming and visioning. We will also have an opportunity to recognize church leaders. Let us listen to one another and shape our future journey together as the body of Christ to fulfill our mission: to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world! Emmanuel Blessing, Your Pastor, Hyesung Lee

RESTING IN GOD "In returning and rest You shall be saved In quietness and trust Shall be your strength." A strong frost covers the rooftops Bushes and car windows On these cold winter mornings. The last of the leaves Have fallen from the trees And darkness falls early In the evenings - across the land. And in moments of quiet prayer I hear the still small voice - saying: "Be with me a little more You are my beloved child You are precious to me. Let my peace and comfort Fill your heart to overflowing. As the trees will get new leaves There will be time for new doing And activity. For now - let your strength renew Be with me in quietness and trust. You are safe - you are loved." 5 Craig Bronzan 12 Vickey Barriner 16 Pete Cruz 20 Patti Bartlebaugh 25 Horace Gipson 21 Jackie Hanel 22 Scott Bartlebaugh 23 Jacob Lukacs 27 Audrey Dunn 28 Rachel Simas 16 Edie & Galen Tidrick Joe Kick 2017 Bible quote: Isaiah 30:15 Please Join in an ALL CHURCH POTLUCK 11:45 am Sunday January 29, 2017 All Members and Friends are Invited! Potluck Lunch Town Hall (Church Growth Opportunities) Leadership Recognition

This event is a fun night for ages 10 and up. This year teams will consist of six members (we are using our new round tables). The first place team will receive $120 and the second place team will receive $60. There are two rounds of about 15 questions. Questions are varied, so it does help to have a diverse age group on your team. Treasures will consist of a wide range of raffle baskets and perhaps other surprises. Treats are small snacks sweet and savory to help keep your energy up during the contest! Tickets are $10. Any questions? Contact Patti Bartlebaugh at 925-757-9278. NEW MEMBERS ORIENTATION On 2 Sundays January 15 and 22 from 12 pm to 1 pm In Quiet Room (behind the choir/fireside room) You are invited to this orientation if you want to join our church as a committed member. This class will include (1) sharing of faith journeys; (2) United Methodist Church Beliefs and Mission; (3) our B.C.U.M. church mission and touring of our church facilities and properties. If you are interested, please let me know at 925-303-9339 (cell) or hslee3@gmail.com. Or you may just show up! Praying with Ignatius through Lent Saturday, March 4, 9am-1pm and Saturday, April 8, 1-3 pm At Byron UMC Lent begins on March 1st (Wednesday) this New Year! Brentwood UMC and Byron UMC will join together in a Lent spiritual journey. Rev. Chris Shiber (Byron UMC) will introduce us to St. Ignatius of Loyola's way of praying, and share some of his "exercises" with us, which will deepen our relationship with Jesus, especially during the season when he is making his way to his death in Jerusalem. The first retreat will introduce the prayer exercise. Then we will practice individually during Lent and join together in the second gathering for reflection on our prayer journey. *Sign-up sheet will be in Narthex every Sunday!

HELP NEEDED for BCUMC NURSERY CARE SPRC (Staff-Parish Relations Committee) is searching for Back-up Nursery Care/Babysitter(s) for Sunday morning services or other events when our two regular Nursery Care-Givers are unavailable. The person(s) could be paid caregivers or volunteers from the congregation. First Aid certification is preferred but not required. Safe Sanctuary training will be provided and a background check will be necessary for any applicants. Please direct inquiries to Joy Kick at (925) 625-4627 or (925) 434-8968 or JJTM_K@yahoo.com. HOPE, OPPORTUNITY, PRAYER, ENCOURAGEMENT Hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas. The Voyagers Christmas Party for Hope House was a big success. We all had a wonderful time - about 50 people attended. The children loved our crafts project, the singing and the goody bags. As we start 2017, I would like to invite anyone who has an interest in working at Hope House to give me a call. Robin Vaughan 650-619-6387 New Choir Robes Plaque Dedication January 15th there will be a brief dedication ceremony of the New Choir Robes Plaque to honor those people who made generous donations in memory or in honor of some loved ones. A plaque with their names will be hung in the Fireside Room after the dedication. These are the names on the plaque: Shirley and David Thomson Aline and Raymond Funk Vernon Noble Reddie Prewett Charles Graham Alvin Simas Our pastor said it the best way: "I believe choir robes give a sense of unity to choir members as chosen ones for a special ministry. It is so important that we dedicate the plaque during one of our services".
