"I have had an active and busy life as well as a long one," says Mrs. Belle Long, 94 year old Beloit woman. Belle is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Drury. Her father joined the Union army in Unionville, Missouri on September 1, 1861 and is four miles east of the spring of 1862 leaving the mother two small children to care for. After the war the family moved to near Bethany, Missouri and here youg Bell met Fred long and they were married. Two daughters were born to the Longs and then the young father contracted tuberculosis. " Fred's health was failing fast and the doctors told us to go to Colorado so we made the long trip by wagon and spent many months here but he did not improve and asked to be taken back home to Bethany. We made the long trip back by train and only a few days after our return he died," said Mrs. Long. Bell Long was left with two small daughters ages three and five and it was then she came to Beloit to be near her parents who had moved to Mitchell county. The young mother not only cared for the children and maintained a home but she had to make the living too thus assuming both parents' role. She went to work in Mrs. Beil's Florist and Gift Shop and worked here for many years. Then she returned home to care for an aged mother doing odd jobs which she could manage. The two daughters Edith and Muriel Long went through the grades here and graduated from Beloit High School. Today they are Mrs. James Caselman and Mrs. Muriel Dillon. "I have alway worked and have done many things to earn an honest living, but I never could have done it all alone. My people, neighbors and friends have helped me and we are grateful to them," says this mother. Mrs. Long is probably one ot the oldest women in Mitchell county and now lives at the hme of Mrs. Will Meyers. Although she is practically blind she cares for herself and writes one or two letters each week and they are very legible, In conservation (conversation) Mrs. Long looks you directly in the eye and you do not realize she cannot see your face. She has good hearing and a keen mind and through the radio keeps up on all current affairs. Today she has 5 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren, and has all through her life been a member of the United Brethern Church.
