Mr. Matthews was ordained in the Missionary Baptist Church in 1885.. He was born on November 18. 1853 in Stokes County. BAPTST MNSTER 106, DES The Rev. Newell J. Matthews died at the home of his son in Pilot Mountain on October 15. The 106-year-old minister had been seriously ill for a week after several years of declining health. He was ordained a Missionary Baptist minister in 1885 and served churches in North Carolina, Virginia, and Missouri during his years in the active pastorate.
