OCTOBER 1: TWENTY-SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Readings Ez 18:25-28/Phil 2:1-11 or 2:1-5/Mt 21:28-32 Today's gospel is an exchange between Jesus and the chief priests and elders, and it speaks of faith and trust and conversion. The elders didn't have faith in Jesus, nor did they trust his Word or the preaching of John the Baptist. They didn't accept the preaching of John the Baptist, even when they saw the fruits, namely that prostitutes and tax collectors were converted. Are we like the elders? Are we holding on so tightly to our own ideas and plans that we cannot hear Jesus' will for us? Do we ignore good that is being done in our midst, because we don't like or trust the one doing the good? Sometimes God will speak to us through the most unlikely characters and events. Today, pray to be open to God's will in our life, to imitate and follow his Son, so that others may recognize Jesus in their midst through the way we live our lives.

Note From the Pope: Pope in Santa Marta: to reach Jesus, Christians must admit they are sinners In his homily at Casa Santa Marta, Pope Francis spoke about sinners, saying if one desires to be called by Christ, they must first recognize that they fall and are not perfect. POPE FRANCIS Many saints have also been persecuted or suspected. We think of St. Joan of Arc, sent to the stake, because they thought she was a witch, and condemned her. A saint! Think of Saint Teresa, suspected of heresy, think of Bl. [Antonio] Rosmini. Mercy I desire, and not sacrifices. And the door to meet Jesus is recognizing ourselves as we are: truly. We are sinners. He comes, and we meet Him. It is very beautiful to meet Jesus. The pope continued saying that in order to reach salvation, one must realize their soul is in danger and is in need of God's mercy, which is always available. POPE FRANCIS This is the first condition of salvation: feeling oneself in danger. It is the first condition of healing: feeling sick. Feeling sinful is the first condition of receiving this gaze of mercy. But let us think of the look of Jesus, so beautiful, so good, so merciful. And we, too, when we pray, we feel this look upon us; it is the look of love, the gaze of mercy, the gaze that saves us. Do not be afraid. Always a scandal begins with this phrase: But how come? ' when you hear this sentence, it smells, and scandal follows. They were, in essence, scandalized by the impurity of not following the law. They knew the Doctrine very well, knew how to go on the way of the Kingdom of God, knew better than anyone how things ought to have been done, but had forgotten the first commandment, of love. Then, they were locked in the cage of sacrifices, perhaps thinking, But let's make a sacrifice to God, let us do all we have to do, so we are saved. In summary, they believed that salvation came from themselves, they felt safe. No, God saves us, Jesus Christ saves us. That how come? which we ve heard so many times from Catholics when they saw works of mercy. How come? Jesus is clear, He is very clear: Go and learn. He sent them to learn, right? Go and learn what mercy means. [That s what] I want, and not sacrifices, for I did not come to call the righteous, but the sinners. If you want to be called by Jesus, recognize yourself a sinner. There are so many, many and always, even in the Church today. They say, No, you cannot, it s all clear, it s all, no, no those are sinners, we have to turn them away. Mercy I desire, and not sacrifices. And the door to meet Jesus is recognizing ourselves as we are: the truth [about ourselves], [that we are] Sinners. And he comes, and we meet. It is very beautiful to meet Jesus. OUR TITHING PARISH TWENTY FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME This Year $ 8,351.50 Last Year $ 7,768.00 Youth $ 34.50 Disaster Relief $ 4,400.00 Food Pantry September 172 Critical Needs September 283 School Supplies September 121 Thank you for your continued generosity! Note from the Pastor, The 2017 Bishop s Fund Appeal, One Bread, One Body, One Family, has begun. Holy Family has always been very supportive of the appeal. The parish actually raised $49,459.00 last year and the parish goal last year was $48,000, so I don t believe it is unreasonable to make this year s goal $50,000. The easiest way to achieve the goal is to raise the number of parishioners who participate. The participation goal is 300. However the average number of parishioners who receive envelopes is 500. From where I sit, the participation goal ought to be closer to 400 not 300. So far 32 families have made a donation or pledge totaling $11,370.00 towards our goal of $50,000. The Bishop s Fund Appeal supports ministries, activities and programs that serve people throughout the diocese in ways that we as an individual parish could never do alone. Please prayerfully consider supporting this Appeal with a pledge or one-time gift. Convenient four payment plans are available and you can also make your gift on line at www.rcdony.org/bishop-s-fund-appeal and click on the donate now tab found on the tool bar on the left. Any gifts received after the Appeal reaches its goal will be used to further supplement the Bishop s Good Samaritan Fund. So that you know that I put my money where my mouth is so to speak, my personal contribution to the 2017 Bishops Fund Appeal is $2,750. As I have explained in the past, my car is paid for, so not having car payments every month allows me to be more generous to this worthwhile effort. Fr. Steve IMPACT Youth Group If you are a student in 6-12 grades, you are invited to IMPACT Youth Group. Join us at the Greystone Building across from Holy Family Church for pizza, games and prizes. We will meet the 2nd and 4th- Saturday of each month from 3:30PM-5:00PM. Our next meeting will be Saturday, October 14th. For more information or to RSVP, please e-mail Sarah at impactwatertown@gmail.com. Natalie Agnes Zaremba

PRAY FOR OUR SEMINARIANS: The Diocese rejoices in five new Seminarians who will join our other four men in discerning what God is calling them to do! God is good! Please continue to pray that God will send more workers into the vineyard to serve as priests, deacons and consecrated religious!
