Saint Mark s episcopal cathedral Choral Evensong the last sunday in the season of the epiphany March 3, 2019 4:30 pm C horal Evensong in this cathedral is a tiny fragment of something else: it is part of the worship which is offered to God by Christian people every hour of the day and night, in every part of the world. When you come to Evensong here, it is as if you were dropping in on a conversation already in progress a conversation between God and his people which began long before you were born and which will continue long after your death. So, do not be surprised or disturbed if there are some things which you do not understand straight away. For a brief moment, you step into the continual stream of worship which is being offered today and which will be offered to the end of time. You are one with those who worship here on earth and in heaven. adapted from the Evensong bulletin of Saint Paul s Cathedral, London.

Saint Mark s episcopal cathedral Welcome to this celebration of Choral Evensong. Please be aware that incense will be used. When Israel came out of Egypt, * the house of Jacob from a people of strange speech, 2 Judah became God s sanctuary * and Israel his dominion. 3 The sea beheld it and fled; * Jordan turned and went back. 4 The mountains skipped like rams, * and the little hills like young sheep. 5 What ailed you, O sea, that you fled? * O Jordan, that you turned back? 6 You mountains, that you skipped like rams? * you little hills like young sheep? 7 Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord, * at the presence of the God of Jacob, 8 Who turned the hard rock into a pool of water * and flint-stone into a flowing spring. Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; * as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. Non nobis, Domine Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to your Name give glory; * because of your love and because of your faithfulness. 2 Why should the heathen say, * Where then is their God? 3 Our God is in heaven; * whatever he wills to do he does. 4 Their idols are silver and gold, * the work of human hands. 4

5 They have mouths, but they cannot speak; * eyes have they, but they cannot see; 6 They have ears, but they cannot hear; * noses, but they cannot smell; 7 They have hands, but they cannot feel; feet, but they cannot walk; * they make no sound with their throat. 8 Those who make them are like them, * and so are all who put their trust in them. 9 O Israel, trust in the Lord; * he is their help and their shield. 10 O house of Aaron, trust in the Lord; * he is their help and their shield. 11 You who fear the Lord, trust in the Lord; * he is their help and their shield. 12 The Lord has been mindful of us, and he will bless us; * he will bless the house of Israel; he will bless the house of Aaron; 13 He will bless those who fear the Lord, * both small and great together. 14 May the Lord increase you more and more, * you and your children after you. 15 May you be blessed by the Lord, * the maker of heaven and earth. 16 The heaven of heavens is the Lord s, * but he entrusted the earth to its peoples. 17 The dead do not praise the Lord, * nor all those who go down into silence; 18 But we will bless the Lord, * from this time forth for evermore. Hallelujah! Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; * as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. 5

Please remain seated. THE LESSONS reading Deuteronomy 6:1 9 Now this is the commandment the statutes and the ordinances that the Lord your God charged me to teach you to observe in the land that you are about to cross into and occupy, so that you and your children and your children s children may fear the Lord your God all the days of your life, and keep all his decrees and his commandments that I am commanding you, so that your days may be long. Hear therefore, O Israel, and observe them diligently, so that it may go well with you, and so that you may multiply greatly in a land flowing with milk and honey, as the Lord, the God of your ancestors, has promised you. Hear, O Israel: The Lord is our God, the Lord alone. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might. Keep these words that I am commanding you today in your heart. Recite them to your children and talk about them when you are at home and when you are away, when you lie down and when you rise. Bind them as a sign on your hand, fix them as an emblem on your forehead, and write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates. 6 Please stand as you are able. canticle Luke 1:46 55 [The Song of Mary] sung by the Choir setting by Herbert Sumsion (1899 1995) Magnificat Evening Service in G My soul doth magnify the Lord, * and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior. For he hath regarded * the lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold from henceforth * all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me, * and holy is his Name. And his mercy is on them that fear him * throughout all generations. He hath showed strength with his arm; * he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat, * and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things, * and the rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel, * as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed for ever. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: * as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Please be seated. reading John 12:24 32 Jesus said, Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Those who love their life lose it, and those who hate their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there will my servant be also. Whoever serves me, the Father will honor. Now my soul is troubled. And what should I say Father, save me from this hour? No, it is for this reason that I have come to this hour. Father, glorify your name. Then a voice came from heaven, I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again. The crowd standing there heard it and said that it was thunder. Others said, An angel has spoken to him. Jesus answered, This voice has come for your sake, not for mine. Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be driven out. And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself. Please stand as you are able. canticle Luke 2:29 32 [The Song of Simeon] sung by the Choir Sumsion in G Nunc dimittis Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, * according to thy word; For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, * which thou hast prepared before the face of all people, To be a light to lighten the Gentiles, * and to be the glory of thy people Israel. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: * as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. 7

the apostles creed chanted by all, standing Officiant I believe in God, All the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
