Meyers Announces His Retirement Strategic Plan Approved On Sunday, August 3, Knollwood members voted to adopt a new strategic plan. This plan, developed by the Deacon Executive Council (DEC) and reviewed and approved by the entire diaconate, gives fresh voice to Knollwood s mission: Learning to Love and Live like Jesus with head, heart and hands. In addition, the plan outlines the guiding principles of our church as our own Affirmations of Faith. Unique to Knollwood, the strategic plan also includes a list of characteristics of the church that when taken together delineate what makes us singularly Knollwood - our Spiritual DNA. As with every useful strategic plan, this document concludes with key focus areas for our church s services and ministries. Every Knollwood committee, ministry team, task force and church group is encouraged to use these focus areas as the blueprint for determining activities for this year. Knollwood, that is every one of us, now has a current guide that can help us focus our actions within our church and in our world. Dr. Ken Meyers and his lovely wife, Adrienne, have decided to retire to Florida to be nearer family, to welcome their first grandchild, and to pursue other professional opportunities, including some consulting work with the Alliance of Baptists. Ken s letter of resignation, sent earlier this week to the congregation, can be read online here: http://www.knollwood.org/resources/kbc-documents The exact date of Ken and Adrienne s departure has not yet been determined but is expected to be by Dec. 1. Please make time in the coming days to thank Ken and Adrienne for the profound difference they have made in the life and work of our congregation, even as we celebrate their new beginning. They will be sorely missed. ~Bob Setzer, Jr. Pastor Capital Campaign Phases II and III Update Phase II: Renovations With renovations of Buildings B and Noffsinger primarily complete, funds remain available for renovation of the kitchen, dining room and fellowship hall. A commercial kitchen company is reviewing the current kitchen equipment and space based on its use over the past two years. Input from members who have used the kitchen extensively in the past will be gathered. Renovation of these spaces is expected to take place next summer in an effort to minimize disruption to church activities. Phase III: Recreation and Community Ministry Building Under the leadership of the diaconate, our church continues to work together to discern how best to respond to a Knollwood family offering to fund a significant portion of the cost of a recreation and community ministry building. A work group appointed by the deacons to research best uses for such a building recommends that it house ministerial and administrative offices, a recreation and wellness area with a gymnasium; and spaces for community ministries, including space devoted to visual arts. The building as currently envisioned would serve identified needs within our congregation, as well as in our community. continued on page 6

SEPTEMBER 2014 2 SOUNDINGS FROM THE WOODED KNOLL Bambi and I couldn t be happier to be back from our sabbatical. That is due to no lack of learning, fun, and adventure during our time abroad. Our exploration of Celtic Christianity in various places around the United Kingdom was rich and rewarding. Still, perhaps the greatest blessing of travel, especially extended travel, is coming home. Being away gives one new eyes with which to appreciate the gifts and wonders of the life and work left behind. It didn t take us long to miss Knollwood. A lot. Worshiping with other congregations, whether in stately cathedrals or musty stone abbeys, was a blessing and encouragement. But those settings, however beautiful, left me pining for the open, transparent windows of the Knollwood sanctuary and the open, welcoming hands and hearts of the Knollwood family. Thank you for the gracious, generous gift of this sabbatical and the even greater gift of welcoming Bambi and me back as we rejoin you in the journey with Jesus. And a heartfelt thanks to an incredibly gifted staff and committed lay leaders who worked so hard this summer. Due to their competence and diligence, my absence registered about a 1.7 on the Richter scale of congregational disruption. Very few churches have such a deep bench of talent to draw upon. We are richly blessed. I had hoped that loss was still safely tucked away in the future. Still, I can t help but be happy for Adrienne and Ken, as this move seems shaped by God s timing: the upcoming birth of their first grandchild in Jacksonville and the chance for Ken to consult for the Alliance of Baptists, finish his book, and work to create a new community of radical hospitality. I will so miss Ken s enormous energy, drive, and passion for the Good News of Jesus, as well as Adrienne s gift of gracious hospitality. Still, these beloved friends and fellow pilgrims have certainly earned the right to act on some life dreams long-deferred due to the pressures of parish ministry. I am happy for them but sad for us. Finally, I am excited about the KBC Strategic Plan approved by the congregation on Sunday, Aug. 3. That plan provides a compelling vision and road map for our congregation s future. That plan will also help us assess and shape the Phase III opportunity as our congregation continues its discernment process about that possibility. I am deeply grateful to the Deacon Executive Council and the Phase III workgroup for the outstanding work they have done toward that end. Thomas Wolfe said, You can t go home again. Labyrinth: St. Paul s Episcopal Church is now allowing outside groups to utilize their beautiful labyrinth inside their chapel. It is outstanding. Watch for sign-up for a Knollwood group to go. Bible Study: By special request from a few Knollwood folks, a small group will meet for a foundational and very basic Bible study class beginning on Wednesday, Oct. 8. No prior knowledge of the Bible is expected or required. Dear Church Family, By now you know we are taking an early, semi-retirement to chase some initiatives we believe God has generated within us. The radical hospitality initiative (more later) will take place alongside a church. Also, the Alliance of Baptists asked me some time ago to advance a new initiative for church theological education. Then there is the book to write! And the word that our daughter is pregnant with our first grandchild was a grand additional surprise. All of this will take place in Jacksonville, Florida. Now we address the sadness of saying good-bye to a church that has been good to us through friendships, labor, and love. SEPTEMBER 2014 4 Chancel Choir Open Enrollment Now is an excellent time for new singers to consider becoming a part of the Chancel Choir. The choir rehearses each Wednesday evening, 7:00-8:15 (with occasional extensions until 8:30). The choir sings each Sunday for the 10:55 service, the Christmas festival (Dec. 14), and a spring service. This spring, the group will lead the April 26 Festival of Hymns. Lucrecia Norman, Director The summer was filled with four weeks of Summer Fun with the fourth week in tandem with VBS. The combined week was a wonderful connection between the school and our church. Mike Vestal A Man with Many Skills Starting a new job is sometimes scary in itself. If Mike Vestal had known all the things he would need to do when he started work at Knollwood Baptist Church in April of 1993, he may have been scared off and not taken the job. He was hired to take care of maintenance, but the job expanded over time to include getting a CDL License to drive the bus, learning to clean toilets, cooking food, washing dishes, running errands, picking up orders at Sam s Club, digging graves, filling the baptistry pool, and too many more to mention. Molly s Musings Frederick Buechner once stated, The grace of God means something like: Here is your life. You might never have been, but you are because the party wouldn t have been complete without you. This year at SNYG we will be focusing on a theme entitled, You, Me and God. We ll trace how our individual lives, the lives of others, and God intertwine to create a really beautiful, fun party called life. We will spend time studying and thinking on multiple topics of life belief, relationships, friends, family, consumerism, technology, differences, mental and physical struggles, peer pressure, church, God and why any of it matters. We are going to walk together, engage life and God s living Spirit to live into this grand party in which we are all invited. Nearly 100 children from KBC and our surrounding community came to learn how God uses ordinary people and things to do the EXTRAORDINARY! The week began with a kick-off carnival on Sunday evening, thanks to the work of carnival chairs, Jeryl and Gerry Bouchard, and their wonderful volunteers. During VBS, children got to imagine and build with God while enjoying crafts, music, Bible stories, recreation and science. It was an awesome week! On Sunday, we celebrated VBS in worship as the children shared the songs and lessons they learned. Children s Ministry kbc.kids Move-Up Sunday Sunday, August 24, children moved up to their new Sunday School classes to coincide with the new school year. We celebrated the graduation of the 5th graders to the Youth Group with a special breakfast for the kids and their families. Children s Worship Children s Worship resumes this month for 1st through 3rd graders. It meets on the 1st, 3rd and 5th Sundays of the month. During the Hymn of Devotion, children meet their leaders in the narthex to walk together to Children s Worship (B244). After the worship service, parents pick up their children from B244. Volunteers are needed to help chaperone the children during that time.
