The Spirit Sustains the Church A Mustard Seed #588 The Solemnity of Pentecost is considered to be the birth of the Catholic Church. The Gospel for this feast is well known. Our Blessed Lady and the Apostles were gathered in the upper room, the same place Our Lord celebrated the Passover the night before He died on the cross. Suddenly the Holy Spirit, in the form of a mighty wind and tongues of fire, filled the room and those present were transformed forever. They went forth as the first members of the Church to proclaim the good news to the world. In good times and bad, Holy Mother Church has survived for two thousand years. Our Lord foretold that being His follower would not be easy. There have been numerous persecutions over the centuries. The truth which the Church proclaims is often inconvenient or hated by the world. But despite the fact that some members of the Church have made serious human errors and sometimes sinned grievously, the Church continues to be guided by the Holy Spirit. This, too, is Our Lord s promise. These are challenging times in the Church. The personal affronts to our Holy Father are obviously an attack on the Church herself. Like other dioceses, the Springfield Diocese has not been immune from the scandal of sexual abuse of minors and adolescents. The declining number of vocations after Vatican Council II has led to the necessity of consolidating and closing many schools and parishes. These events have left many of the faithful shaken, disappointed, confused, and sometimes angry. The loss of a beloved parish, which is like an extended family, has been particularly difficult. Pastoral planning s intentions to provide adequate access to the Holy Eucharist throughout the diocese were commendable. A clearer explanation and more sensitive execution of the plans on the parts of diocesan and parish leaders may have been useful because even the changing of the parish name has elicited strong emotions. In some of those situations affected, the changing of the parish name might have occurred with less tension from greater collaboration. We offer some clarity here. When a church for a parish is built, it is either dedicated or consecrated. In either instance, the name that that sacred building receives remains with that building (unless it is sold and deemed profane, i.e., no longer for sacred use). In a parish merger, like that of Sts. Peter & Paul and St. Anne, the church designated for parish use retains its original name. Thus, the newly named Divine Mercy Parish, Three Rivers, worships in Sts. Peter & Paul Church. Likewise, St. Elizabeth Parish (a merger of St. John the Baptist and St. Mary of the Assumption), Ludlow, worships at St. John the Baptist Church. While this may seem a trivial matter to some, it s important for a proper understanding. Secular laws and customs do not always agree with Church law. We should find encouragement in Pentecost, and the birthday of the Catholic Church. Globally and locally, the Church survives through trials, both within the Church and the world at large. When Jesus appointed Peter to be the rock of the Church, Our Lord promised that the gates of hell would not prevail. That is because the Holy Spirit, through the use of frail humans, is always present in and sustains the Church. Jesus tells us, The Spirit of Truth will guide you to all truth. ~~ BACK PAGE HUMOR & MORE~~ The Grandma Test I was out walking with my four year old granddaughter. She picked up something off the ground and started to put it in her mouth. I took the item away from her and asked her not to do that. "Why?" my Granddaughter asked. "Because it's been on the ground; you don't know where it's been, it's dirty, and probably has germs," I replied. At this point, my granddaughter looked at me with total admiration and asked, "Grandma, how do you know all this stuff? You are so smart." I was thinking quickly. "All Grandmas know this stuff, It's on the Grandma Test." "You have to know this stuff or they don't let you be a Grandma." We walked along in silence for two or three minutes, but she was evidently pondering this new information. "Oh...I get it!" she beamed. "So if you don't pass the test, you have to be the Grandpa." "Exactly," I replied, with a big smile on my face. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ PRAYER TO ST. MICHAEL Saint Michael The Archangel, defend us in the battle, be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray. And you, O Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who roam through the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.
