From The Pastor s Desk Hatfield s Hints for the Holidays We enter into the most amazing several weeks of the year. Thanksgiving and New Year s Day bookend the season of Advent the birth of Jesus. While I don t pretend to be an expert, I have learned over the years learned some basics for making the most of this season. So here are some hints hopefully, they will prove helpful. Pace yourself. The season is long enough to wear you out if you don t pick and choose your activities. So don t fill up the calendar. Don t feel guilty that you don t say yes to every invitation. Don t break the bank. Make Black Friday just another day. Limit your giftgiving. Come January, the bills and charges don t have to put you in a panic. And if they do, then shame on you. Deal with the grief. If this time of year brings back painful memories and regret, know you are not alone. Grief is a big, black hole. You can jump in it if need be. But learn the skills that will enable you to crawl out. Walk around this hole of grief. But don t gaze into it every waking moment. Moving through the pain does not mean you forget or cease to care. But you don t let it overwhelm you. Worship well. Don t go through the motions. Come to church. Be with God s people. Be open and friendly. And above all sing the carols. We use them for a short time, but they tell the truth of God s love. See you Sunday, Stephen G.
