Holy Family Parish FAITH AND WORKS For the past few weeks, we have been looking at some practical areas of living our faith. In light of this, I came across an article by Gus Lloyd in A Minute in the Church, and thought I would pass it on for further reflection. Do Catholics believe they can work their way into heaven? Let s put it this way if they think they can get into heaven, by any means, apart from Christ, they are completely wrong, and not truly Catholic. Since it was founded by Jesus nearly 2000 years ago, the Catholic Church has always taught that without faith in Jesus, there is no salvation. The Catechism of the Catholic Church states it very clearly. In paragraph 161 it says: Believing in Jesus Christ, and in the One who sent him for our salvation, is necessary for salvation. Also from the Gospel of Mark: He that believes and is baptized shall be saved: but he that believes not shall he condemned. (Mk16:16) The Church has never taught that a person can get to heaven solely on the basis of their good works. But do works play a role in our salvation? According to Scripture they do. James 2:24 states: See how a man is justified by works and not by faith alone The Scriptures speak again and again about how we will be judged on the basis of our works. But no amount of work, apart from faith in Christ, will do us any good. Our salvation is by grace, through faith, working in love. Fr. Jim For further study, see: CCC 161, 181, James 2:24-26 Mark16:16, Romans 2:6-10 Galatians 5:5, Ephesians 2:8 FAITH ALIVE BOOK STUDY Enrich your faith journey by participating in the FAITH ALIVE BOOK STUDY. We will study the Catechism Part I by Christopher Ruff of the Diocese. Pick up a copy of the book at the Holy Family St. John s Rectory office. ($10.00) Call Ann Grunwald with questions at 326-5459. The first Class will be held Sunday, September 23rd at 6:30 pm and Monday, September 24th at 10:00 am. 3 PRAYER CORNER God, grant healing and peace to the sick of our communities and those who have requested our prayers.
