Page 2 Diesel shortage hits a number of business houses Businesses dependent on daily supply of goods and raw materials were the worst hit during the 4-day diesel shortage crisis which came to an end on Thursday. Due to the shortage of lorries, the freight charges had more than doubled. The prices of vegetables and fruits in the local market went up by almost 30 to 40%. However, in Koyambedu wholesale vegetables market, except on the first day of the shortage, the prices went down due to excess stock. A leading builder in Anna Nagar told this reporter that he has 6 ongoing housing projects across Chennai and had to pay huge amounts for the purchase of sand and other building materials to ensure that work in them did not come to a standstill. He said that, due to shortage of labour, he contracts labour by the month on daily wages and could not afford to stop work as they would move away to other projects. IRDA proposes enrolment in mediclaim upto the age of 65 Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDA) has proposed that insurance companies should enroll persons upto the age of 65 for mediclaim cover. According to its draft proposal, if a hospital is approved for cashless treatment facility at the time of issuing the policy, it should continue to provide the facility to the insured till the term of the insurance even if the hospital is removed from the list in the meantime. It also provides for portability of mediclaim policy within the insurance period to another insurance company without loss of any benefits. The proposal makes it mandatory for insurance companies to provide reasons in writing for denial or part settlement of claims. Insurance companies must ensure that cashless treatment facility in hospitals is offered to the insured not only in metro cities but also in 2 nd and 3 rd tier cities. The insurance companies should regularly update their websites regarding empanelled hospitals which offer cashless treatment facility. Heat wave likely to continue According to meteorological department, the intense heat wave experienced by Chennai in the last week is likely to continue for a few more days. The highest temperature recorded last week was 42.5 degrees C on Wednesday. Though the temperature dropped to 38.5 degrees on Friday, the late onset of sea breeze kept the air hot till late in the evening. The temperature is likely to drop with the onset of monsoon in Kerala in the first week of June. The two sisters were found beaten and strangled to death in their residence. 30 sovereigns of gold jewellery and cash were stolen from the house. Page 8 June 2-8, 2012 Short circuit leads to major fire in transformer A short circuit in the feeder cable led to a major fire in the power transformer at the junction of Natesan Street and Usman Road, T. Nagar at 1 p.m on May 30. Even though the EB officials cut off power supply to the cable, it took an hour for the fire to be bought under control with the help of the fire department. There was power outage in the area for close to 8 hours. An EB worker told Mambalam Times that nearly 80 meters of 240 sq.mm cable which got burnt in the fire had to be replaced to restore power. He said that nearby vendors and other commercial establishments dump garbage and other corrosive materials under the transformer which often corrode the insulation of the cable. He further said that employees of nearby establishments often park their two-wheelers under the transformer, but luckily none was parked when the incident occurred. Stray dog dies in fire near temple tank A stray dog was burnt to death when some unknown persons set fire to bushes on the banks of Kothandaramar Temple tank behind Kittu Park, Ellaiamman Koil Street, West Mambalam, two days ago. Local residents told Mambalam Times that the temple tank has not been maintained properly for the past several years. The compound wall of the tank is damaged and is misused as a public convenience, they added.
