October 2018 The Pillars N E W C O N C O R D U N I T E D M E T H O D I S T C H U R C H Save the Date Building Committee Review For 15 minutes after both worship services on Oct. 14 th we will take time to touch base about where the building campaign is currently and share what is next. You will be receiving a card to return anonymously that will allow us to take the temperature for giving financially to a three year campaign. October 14 th is not a conversational forum, but just a review. The building committee will be available after the meeting for questions. A N o t e f r o m P a s t o r L i s a The New Concord UMC vision is to be a church where people are inspired to develop a Christian foundation for faithful living, to demonstrate compassion, to serve others, and to share God s love with everyone. We are continuing to unpack our New Concord UMC vision developed by the leaders of the congregation. Last month we looked at what it means to inspire people and we used the first definition found for the word and thought about what it means to provoke one another in positive ways. This month we will consider the second definition found which is to breathe or blow into or upon. Of course the image of God breathing life into us and breathing upon us is very common in our faith language. CPR is known as the breath of life and other inventions have come along in modernity that help us breath. Without breath we die and likewise without the breath of God our faith dies. then the LORD God formed man from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and the man became a living being. Genesis 2:7 We, the church, are the Body of Christ who lives and breathes and walks the earth. We are to be a church that lives and breathes and walks the earth. Let s inspire one another and inspire all who cross our path to be influenced, moved and guided by the Holy Spirit. How we do that is through our witness of the good news. Jesus said to them again, Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you. When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained. John 20:21-23 Pentecost is not the first time the Holy Spirit was breathed into the people. Jesus directly breathed it upon the disciples who then passed it on to the people. The Body of Christ received the breath of the Holy Spirit to bring forgiveness. We can inspire each other and our community when we offer that Good News of forgiveness which is the vehicle of hope. Hope is inspirational. As a congregation we are and need to continue to offer people grace, grace, and more grace!

P a g e 2 N e w P h o t o D i r e c t o r y We are still in the planning stages of our updated church directory, but have our photography dates set. Pictures will be taken on October 9th and 10 th from 2:00 p.m. 8:30 p.m. We are in need of several volunteers to help the process run smoothly. We will need volunteers to help each family sign in on the photography dates. If you are able to help, please call Corey in the church office. To schedule your photography appointment online, simply go to www.ucdir.com, click on schedule your photography session on the right side, enter oh2155 in the Church Code field and enter concord in the Church Password field. Follow the prompts to schedule your family s appointment time. If you have 6 or more in your family please use 2 consecutive time slots. The online scheduling option is available Monday through Friday. We still have appointments open, call the church office to schedule yours today! M O P S This year we will... Live Expectantly Surrender Daringly Breathe Freely May this be the year you FIND YOUR FIRE MOPS started meeting last month. If you are a mother of a preschool aged child, please feel free to join us. Meetings are held the second and fourth Thursdays at 9:30 a.m. We look forward to growing in faith with you! If you would like to help give mothers a chance to connect as they grow in Christ, we are still looking for childcare helpers. If you are interested or able to help, please call Corey in the church office. Facebook.com/ NewConcordMOPS T h u r s d a y m o r n i n g B i b l e S t u d y Join Pastor Lisa for Bible study on Thursday mornings from 11 a.m. Noon at New Concord UMC. Our first session will meet on the following dates: October 4, October 11, October 25, November 1, November 8, and November 15. We will break for Advent and then resume on January 10, 2019. We will study The Call: the Life and Message of the Apostle Paul by Adam Hamilton. The cost of the participant book is $7.00 and we have scholarships available if the cost is prohibitive.

P a g e 3 M i s s i o n U p d a t e Our October project will be helping the New Concord Elementary school with clothing and weighted blankets. Please help by purchasing size 5-10 sweatpants, socks, underwear and winter gloves. There will be laundry baskets in the narthex for contributions during the last three Sundays of October. Weighted blankets are used with the special needs children to provide warmth and security. These can be made from existing fleece blankets or scraps of fleece. A sewing bee will be held at the church on Thursday morning Nov. 1 st at 10:00 a.m. to make the weighted blankets. Donations of fleece scraps or whole small blankets can be dropped off in the office. Loads of Love is continuing on the third Wednesday of each month from 4:30 to 7:30. There are two shifts. 4:30-6 pm and 6pm to 7:30. Contact Wayne or Barbara Caudill if you can take a shift. The church missions supported the youth group's Weather Bags with a $100 donation and will support their Project Feed trip in November. We received a letter from Henderson Settlement that they are looking for money more than items this year, therefore we are going to keep our donated items more local with an adult clothing drive for the Cambridge Behavioral Hospital in November and household items for the Habitat for Humanity ReStore in Zanesville in the spring. Thank you to all who helped with the Weather Bag donations! Youth meeting: Sunday, October 7 th 11:30-12:30 p.m. Youth meeting: Sunday, October 21 st 11:30-12:30 p.m. (For child protection rules, I will need one adult to attend this meeting with me.)
