The Pastor s Page THE ELEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Last weekend Jesus told us that if we do His work on earth we then qualify to be called His mother, His brothers, and His sisters. Christ has overcome the devil and grants us the freedom to live for the Kingdom. Today Jesus uses one of His favorite teaching tools; namely, the parable. A parable is a simple story used to illustrate a religious or ethical principal as used by Jesus in the gospel. Today s gospel story illustrates a parable. Jesus often used the very common experience of His day to act as backgrounds to His teachings. Today is the experience of a farmer sowing seed across his field and waiting for it to grow. Everything has its beginning and takes its growth at the hand of God. We very seldom think of the period between planting and harvesting and yet it is the most vital time for any plant. Jesus scatters us across the world as the farmer scatters the seed across the field. In the case of the mustard seed we are left wondering how this seed becomes the biggest of all shrubs. It remains a mystery to us but we place our faith in the Lord who will give it growth and bring it to maturity. We hope that everyone in the parish will join us next weekend as we celebrate or patron saint, Thomas More. It is the custom that each parish may use the Mass of the patron saint to replace the orations of the closest Sunday so that each parish may celebrate a special feast in honor of its patron. On the 23rd and 24th of June, we will celebrate the life of St. Thomas More who gave his life to uphold the teachings of the Church. We are called to follow his lead and to stand up for Church teachings. We will top off our celebration with an ice cream social to start after the 10:00 am Mass on the 24th. We hope that all our parishioners will make a special effort to attend Mass and help us celebrate the life of St. Thomas More. Let us clarify for you the details of the Priest Convocation to be held the week of the 17th of June at Pheasant Run. Cardinal Cupich has requested that we consider our attendance at the Convocation to be mandatory. All parishes are being instructed to cancel Masses that week Monday through Thursday. Here at St. Thomas More we have decided to meet him half way. The only fully scheduled days are Tuesday and Wednesday of that week. Therefore, we will drive out together on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings for the day's activities and return in the evening of each day. We will participate and then be home to be sure that the properties are not left unattended. Deacon George Borha will offer a Communion Service on Tuesday and Wednesday at Noon. Thank you for your understanding and please pray for the success of the Priest Convocation. In Christ, Msgr. Richard Zborowski Fr. Matt Compton Page 2

Saint Thomas More Parish, founded in 1946, experienced dramatic post-world War II growth. Consequently, a larger place for divine worship became necessary and a new parish church, our current one, was dedicated in 1957. St. Thomas More is vividly portrayed in 16 beautiful stained glass windows, which chronicle this dedicated patron saint's life. Natural light illuminates each window, inspiring viewers to reflect and thus benefit in their own personal ways. This architecturally and historically significant church, the clergy and parishioners of St. Thomas More Parish motivate our efforts to raise funds for basic repairs and maintenance. To commemorate our parish and continue support for it, new electronic cards of St. Thomas More are now available. These new electronic prayer cards may be selected individually for $5.00 each or as a Mass card for $10.00 each. You may place an order online for any card at https://stmchicagoecards.com Our easy to use site assists you in selecting an e-card and paying for it using Pay Pal, a secure site. Your transaction will be completed quickly and securely. You may schedule your e-card for immediate or future delivery and your order will be tracked. No Weekday Masses June 19-20, 2018 Listed below is the announcement from the Vicar General regarding Masses during the week of Monday, June 19. For clarification, the liturgy schedule for St. Thomas More Parish is as follows: Monday, June 19, Mass at 12:00 PM. Tuesday, June 20, Communion Service at 12:00 PM, led by Deacon George. Wednesday, June 21, Communion Service at 12:00 PM, led by Deacon George. Thursday, June 22, Mass at 12:00 PM, adoration at 12:30 PM, Confessions at 1:00 PM and Benediction at 2:00 PM. Priests serving in the Archdiocese of Chicago will gather for their triennial convocation from June 18 through June 21. This gathering is an important and necessary time of spiritual renewal for the priests, so that they can better serve the People of God. The priests have been asked to clear their schedules, so that they can fully participate in this experience. Consequently, during those three days, there will be no weekday Masses celebrated. However, there will be prayer services as determined by each parish. In cases of emergency, parishioners can contact parish staff who will make whatever referral is appropriate. The people of the Archdiocese can support their priests in several ways. Their patient understanding of scheduling changes is very important. Even more important is the prayerful support they extend to priests who have prayed for them and with them. Please use the prayer found at the end of this announcement as a personal prayer or as a family prayer. As the priests of the Archdiocese gather for their convocation know that they bring you and your families in their hearts to this important time of prayer and reflection. Very Rev. Ronald Hicks Vicar General Archdiocese of Chicago LORD JESUS CHRIST, eternal High Priest, you offered yourself to the Father on the altar of the Cross and through the outpouring of the Holy Spirit gave your priestly people a share in your redeeming sacrifice. Hear our prayer for all the priests of this Archdiocese of Chicago, especially as they gather in Convocation. Grant that all who are ordained to the ministerial priesthood may be ever more conformed to you, the divine Master, the Good Shepherd. May they preach the Gospel with pure heart and clear conscience. Let them be shepherds according to your own Heart, single-minded in service to you and to the Church and shining examples of a holy, simple and joyful life. Through the prayers of the Blessed Virgin Mary, draw all priests and the flocks entrusted to their care to the fullness of eternal life where you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
