F I R S T U N I T E D M E T H O D I S T C H U R C H WORSHIP 8th Sunday after Pentecost July 30, 2017 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words. Romans 8:26 WELCOME WE GATHER PRELUDE Love Divine, All Love Excelling (arr. Paul Manz) Ty Woodward, Organ *PROCESSIONAL HYMN #2001 The Faith We Sing We Sing to You, O God *CALL TO WORSHIP William Bumiller, Lay Lector Let us worship God, gracious and holy. Give us determination to seek you, O God, wisdom to perceive you, and patience to wait for you. Grant us, O God, a mind to meditate on you, eyes to behold you. Give us ears to listen for your Word, a heart to love you and a life to proclaim you. We worship you with joy this day! *CHORAL ACT OF PRAISE All ye who hear: now to His temple draw near; join me in glad adoration. *SHARING THE PEACE OF CHRIST Please greet those worshipping near you. As a courtesy to others, please silence all cell phones/sound-making devices. * Asterisks indicate standing if you are able.

CHILDREN S MESSAGE #2233 The Faith We Sing Where Children Belong This, this is where children belong, welcomed as part of the worshiping throng. Water, God s word, bread and cup, prayer and song: This is where children belong. As the congregation sings, all children are invited to come forward. I Am a Child of God I am a child of God; You are God s child, it s true. Children of God are called to love one another, as Jesus taught to do. As the congregation sings, the children may go to their Sunday School classes. OUR MISSION & COMMON LIFE We thank God for these opportunities for fellowship, for worship, and for service. Thanks be to God! WE HEAR GOD S WORD William Bumiller THE LESSON Romans 8:26-28, 35-39 (Pew Bible page 158, N.T.) Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church. Thanks be to God! SERMON The Top 10 Reasons to Be in Church William Bumiller Rev. Patricia Farris WE RESPOND INVITATION TO PRAYER #544 UMH Like the Murmur of the Dove s Song LISTENING FOR THE VOICE OF GOD SILENT PRAYER & PASTORAL PRAYER THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

CHORAL RESPONSE WE OFFER OUR GIFTS & OURSELVES Your generous gifts support the ministries and outreach of the church. You may place gifts of cash or checks made out to First UMC in the offering plates as they are passed. You may also place your Let s Connect/Let Us Pray card in the offering plate. Give online at any time at www.santamonicaumc.org. Credit cards are now accepted at the Sunday Hospitality Table during Coffee Fellowship. Thank you. May God grow in us generous and joyful hearts. THE OFFERTORY The Chancel Choir/Dr. James Smith, Music Director A Hymn to God the Father (John Ness Beck/words by John Donne, 1572-1631) Wilt Thou forgive that sin where I begun, Which is my sin, though it were done before? Wilt Thou forgive that sin through which I run and do still run, though still I do deplore? When Thou hast done, Thou hast not done, for I have more. Wilt Thou forgive that sin which I have won others to sin, and made my sin their door? Wilt Thou forgive that sin which I did shun a year or two, but wallowed in a score? When Thou hast done, Thou hast not done, for I have more. I have a sin of fear that when I ve spun my last thread, I shall perish on the shore; Swear by Thyself, that at my death Thy Son shall shine as He shines now and heretofore; And, having done that, thou hast done. I fear no more. *RESPONSE #94 UMH The Doxology *UNISON PRAYER OF DEDICATION Rev. Farris O great and holy God, we sing hymns, we offer prayers, we stand in awe of your creation, we are humbled by your love. Through our gifts, we offer our appreciation for all your mercies. We pray that both these gifts and our lives will honor you in the name of Christ our Lord. Amen. WE GO FORTH TO SERVE *HYMN #539 UMH O Spirit of the Living God *BENEDICTION *BENEDICTION RESPONSE POSTLUDE Tuba Tune (C. S. Lang) Ty Woodward Worship concludes with the Postlude music which prepares us to transition from worship to life in the world. You are invited to remain seated until the Postlude concludes, or to exit quietly.

F O C U S O N July 30, 2017 RELAY FOR LIFE The American Cancer Society s annual Relay for Life will be held on Corsair Field at Santa Monica College - this year the event is one day only. The Health Ministry Council is sponsoring church member Chris Reagh s continued efforts to support this worthy cause. Chris says, I have been participating in Relay for Life for the past few years. I got onboard to do this charity to remember my grandmother who passed away from cancer. I continue to do this because it is important to honor loved ones who have cancer, or remember those we lost to cancer. It is a charity I hold dear and a passion I have to this great cause. Please come out and join me at S.M.C. for a time of togetherness with a community of people driven by the same goal to stamp out cancer. Relay for Life strives to bring communities together to remember loved ones lost, honor survivors of all cancers, and raise money to help the American Cancer Society make a global impact on cancer. If your time is limited, the Opening Ceremonies from 9-11 a.m. is an opportunity to witness and support the Survivors Lap. To register or to donate, visit: www.relayforlife.org, search for team captain Chris Reagh/ Team Wesley Walkers, to find First UMC s page.
