Biographical/Historical Note Born and ordained a priest in France, John Dubois fled the French Revolution, arriving in the United States in 1791. After working in the American South for several years, he founded Mount Saint Mary s College and Seminary, Emmitsburg, Maryland, in 1808. While there he served as spiritual director to Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton. In 1826, he was named Bishop of New York (the only non-irish ordinary in the history of the Archdiocese). By the end of his episcopate there were over 200,000 Catholics in his diocese, and the numbers were growing. He established the first seminary in Nyack, New York, in 1833. In 1839, as his health worsened, Bishop John Hughes was appointed administrator of the diocese. Bishop DuBois died on December 20, 1842, and is buried at Old Saint Patrick s Cathedral. Scope & Content Note The collection comprises the papers by and relating to Bishop John DuBois. This collection is mainly comprised of DuBois s correspondence during his time of Bishop of New York, as well as some pastoral letters and addresses. The items in Folder 3 consist of copies of items held in the Archives of the Archdiocese of Baltimore. Arrangement Arranged in one series, which is arranged chronologically. Items in folders are also arranged chronologically whenever possible.
