Most Reverend Bishop Joe S. Vásquez, Retired Bishop John McCarthy, Worthy Master, Reverend Fathers, Sir Knights and Ladies: As we come to the end of our fraternal year I want to thank all of my brother Sir Knights and wives who have given so much of their time and talent to supporting our mission. As we embark upon a new fraternal year we can see major challenges looming for our Church and our Christian faith. In our lifetime we have been blessed by being able to exercise our faith according to the beliefs of our Church and to do this without coercion or restriction. We have all heard about the current controversy about religious freedom that we are engaged in. When any government can tell us as individuals or as a Church how we can live out our faith, the discussion is no longer partisan politics; no longer right or left; no longer Democrat or Republican; and no longer liberal or conservative. This discussion is about our rights to practice our religion without interference from the government. I earnestly encourage us all to educate ourselves about the issues involved in this debate, especially Blessed Pope John Paul II remarks to American Bishops during a visit to Baltimore MD, The challenge facing you, dear friends, is to increase people's awareness of the importance for society of religious freedom; to defend that freedom against those who would take religion out of the public domain and establish secularism as America's official faith. The US Council of Catholic Bishops and the Diocese of Austin have published extensive information on their websites for us to educate ourselves and others. Lets take advantage of this resource. continued at bottom of page 5

In parting I encourage all Sir Knights and their families to see the film For Greater Glory. This film is a reminder to us that the obstacles we face to maintain our religious freedom are small compared to those others have endured. A memorable line from the movie is: Freedom is not a word just for writers, politicians or fancy documents. It is our wives, it is our children, it is our homes, it is our faith, it is our lives. Let us all participate in the Fortnite for Freedom as a demonstration of our support for our God, Christ, and our Church. Vivat Jesus SK Dennis Murff Faithful Navigator
