August 2015 Messiah Lutheran Church Page 2 Mission Madness! Messiah youth and friends enjoyed a fun morning tying 12 fleece blankets for Lutheran World Relief on July 14, enjoying games, dance competitions and snacks in the process. Many thanks to all who helped in any way and to the Thrivent Action Team for providing the funds for the fleece. The blankets will be blessed on September 13. They will then be sent off to share God s love with people around the globe. Pork Chop Sandwich / Ice Cream Social Serving our Local and Global Communities Thank you to all who supported the 24th Annual Pork Chop Sandwich/Ice Cream Social July 3. The social generated sales of $3926 which after expenses resulted in $3194. The Council will decide on disbursement of a portion of the proceeds to community organizations at the August meeting with the balance going to the general fund to support Messiah s Mission Plan. What a wonderful feeling when we all put our hands to use working on a worthwhile project. Our donations of material goods, time, talent and our God-given gifts allow our church to continue its mission of serving God by serving others. We worked at various tasks from cutting pies to dipping ice cream, cooking pork chops and making sandwiches to pouring drinks all were important. These things were accomplished by some of our youngest members to our oldest and everyone in between. It couldn t be done without you!

August 2015 Messiah Lutheran Church Page 3 In the Messiah Family Your help is needed! In baptism you promised to help teach and nurture the faith of the baptized. Sunday school teachers are needed for the 2015-16 program year. Lessons will be planned for you. Contact Paula Luft at 309-337 -8557 to schedule a time to teach and learn along with our young members. Claimed, Gathered, Sent Pr. Linda will begin a sermon series the weekend of August 15/16 based on the resource Claimed, Gathered, Sent: A Guide for Conversation. Each week will explore a topic about the very nature and purpose of our church who we are and what God is doing through us. You won t want to miss joining in this timely exploration of the life of our church. In the words of Bishop Elizabeth Eaton, I believe your engagement will lead to a deeper understanding and a clearer sense of our identity, our mission and our calling to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ and to be agents of God s love in the world. Water Damage: There has been some paint flaking off above one of the small east windows in the sanctuary. Alan Anderson was asked to look at the job and he found that the brick area behind the plaster was wet. Alan then took his lift to the roof and found that the east side gutter was rusted and cracked, letting water run down inside the bricks. He was able to put on a temporary patch but the gutter will need to be replaced. A person has been contacted to do the work, but it will not be done until late-august. There will also be some brick work that needs to be done at that time. Unfortunately the interior work on the east wall can't be done until the leaks are fixed. Alan also found some flashing that needs to be replaced on the east side of the steeple tower that has allowed some leaking there. The cost of these very needed repairs will be funded from the Preserving For The Future fund. The Building and Grounds Committee Help preserve our history: If you take photos at any of our church events please forward a copy to buffaloman1@frontier.com. Jack Engelsen will provide them to the History Committee for review and possible inclusion in Messiah s ongoing history records. Blessing of students, staff and backpacks: Bring your backpack/book bag with you to Sunday worship August 23 for a special blessing as students and staff head back to the classroom. God s blessing be upon the marriage of Kaitlyn Grymonprez and Nathan Byers who will be married at Messiah August 1. God s work. Our hands. Sunday is September 13. Plan to join in this dedicated day of service of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America as we collect items for the Galva Food Pantry. There s a full day of fun! Team sign-up is in Luther Hall. Watch for more information in next month s newsletter and the weekly announcements. Mission Opportunities Let s fill the WELCA washtub! Please continue to bring a bar of soap to worship with you each week through August to support Lutheran World Relief. School supply lists are available in the narthex and Luther Hall on WELCA s collection boxes. Please take a list and return your supplies by the end of September. Enclosed is the 2015/2016 Server sheet. Please review it to be aware of dates you are scheduled. Thank you for your willingness to serve. First We Give of Ourselves This year s stewardship program is the second of a three-year series "Giving in Gratitude." These are great days at Messiah, days filled with God's blessings and our gratitude! Together we will explore the many ways we are blessed by God, especially with God's grace in Christ, and how our response of gratitude moves us to be a blessing to others. Our Celebration and Commitment Sunday will be October 18. Watch for more information starting in September. The Stewardship Committee
