SAINT FRANCIS XAVIER PARISH APRIL 23, 2017 Patricia 2017 Peace be with you. ~John 20:19 OUR MISSION STATEMENT ST. FRANCIS XAVIER IS A CATHOLIC- JESUIT PARISH IGNITED BY THE EUCHARIST TO PRAY, SERVE, DO JUSTICE, AND LOVE. Celebrating 125 Years
Matt Holland, S.J. photo 2013 Divine Mercy The prayer Jesus taught is the prayer I whisper as the sun s rays dry the morning dew and when sleep does not come easy. I have prayed it countless times and places, and suddenly I realize the depth of two small simple words I have taken for granted. Simple words so easily passed over that bind a promise to an expectation. I replay the words over and over, Forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors (Mt 6:12, emphasis added), and wonder, how could I have not seen it? Countless times, head bowed low, I kneel at the foot of the cross, petrified that this is the time grace runs dry and forgiveness is denied. I await the thunderous boom of harsh judgement that assures me there is a limit, and yet it never comes. Instead, I receive God s mercy. Because Jesus paid my debt in full, I am restored in the promise that there is no sin too great for his grace. I am quick to seek forgiveness, yet at times slow to give it. I forget the small word that boldly calls me to action and draws me into his heart: Forgive as we are forgiven. The moment I deny the grace extended me, I become the anticipated thunderous boom at which I coward. I deny the one whose example I long to follow, and forget it was with his least breaths as he hung from the cross that Jesus prayed for our forgiveness. Head bowed low and knees firmly planted, I pray for the courage to love as I have been loved and forgive as I have been forgiven.
