Welcome Welcome to First United Methodist Church; we are delighted that you have chosen to worship with us this morning. Founded in 1821, First Church is the oldest Protestant church in the area and the oldest Methodist church in Florida. This historic church, with four Sunday services, has a membership of 3200 and is overflowing with life. We hope that you will consider becoming a member of our church family. Flowers The flowers in the Sanctuary today are given to the glory of God and in loving memory of Martin Thompson by his family; and in celebration of Lauren and Tanya Nelson s 45th wedding anniversary on August 29th. The Growing Season Devotional Guides From August 16th - September 13th we will focus on five essential areas of discipleship that are fundamental to our faith. A Devotional Guide and other resources are available to help you get the most out of this season. Visitor/New Member Class We welcome all visitors and new members that are interested in learning more about First Church to an introductory class that consists of four parts. The class will assemble at 9:30am in room PH101 next door in the Perry Home. Today s class, Serving at First Church, will help you find your place to use your gifts and talents in service in the church and community. On August 23, Tour of First Church will walk you through the historic buildings of our campus. We hope you join us each week. Alice Jordan First Lesson: 1 Kings 2:10-13, 3:3-14 David dies after reigning for forty years. Solomon, his son and successor, prays for wisdom to discern between good and evil in order to govern the people according to God s will. God promises to grant his request. Second Lesson: Ephesians 5:15-20 Paul calls the Ephesians to walk carefully, not to be foolish but wise in the ways of the Lord. He calls for them to give thanks to God for all things, in the name of Jesus. Gospel Lesson: John 6:51-58 In a foreshadowing of the Eucharist, Jesus tells the Jews that eternal life is found in eat(ing) my flesh and drink(ing) my blood. As God s life is found in Christ, whoever eats this bread will live forever.

Announcements No Wednesday Night Activities End of Summer Break There will be no Wednesday night activities this week as we observe an end-of-summer break. Wednesday Night Dinner, Christian Education classes and other activities will begin on Wednesday night for the fall semester on August 26th. Please note: Sanctuary Choir will still rehearse on August 19th. Fall Semester Christian Education - Register Today The Fall Semester 2015 Christian Education Course Catalog, listing all the classes offered during our fall semester, is available this morning. Read through the course catalog carefully and try to find the place where you can grow in faith and knowledge this semester. Registration forms are also available for you to sign-up for classes. Registration forms are not required, but are strongly encouraged, so that we may accurately prepare for the coming semester. Please complete and return your registration form (available in the Course Catalog and online) as soon as possible. Christian Education Sunday Today Today we begin The Growing Season. During this season we will focus on the five visions that guide our mission at First Church. Our first vision is Christian Education. Today we hope that you sign up for fall classes and participate in some of the other activities listed below. Blessing of the Backpacks 8:00am, 11:00am and ICON At the 11:00am & ICON services students are encouraged to bring their backpacks to the altar, when directed, to be blessed. Students, teachers and administrators will also be recognized at the 8:00am service. Super Sunday School 9:00am The Wright Place The Education Committee is sponsoring a church-wide Sunday School Event in The Wright Place starting at 9:00am. We re inviting all our Adult Sunday School classes to attend this event. Please come join us so we can grow together in our knowledge of God as a church family and help one another on our path of Christian Discipleship. Church-wide Family Picnic Noon HRAC To cap off the day, there will be a wonderful church-wide picnic for all to participate in after the 11:00am worship services.
