Harmony Gather as Friends Few things are as important to a church as gathering together in fellowship, especially if those gatherings combine a gracious welcome with faithful conversation about things that matter. During the first week of November (Nov. 1-8) we will have eleven neighborhood gatherings throughout the city and county. Each and every one of you should by now have received a personal invitation and I hope you will plan to attend. We also want this to be a space to talk about things that matter, for a conversation about faith, money and community. Each gathering will combine some fellowship time with a facilitated conversation. You will not be asked for money, nor will you need to solve the problems of the world (or the church). If you wish, it will be a chance to share a little of what you ve learned in your life about faith and giving. If you prefer to just come, visit with friends or meet some new ones, and simply listen, that s wonderful too. If you want to know more about what these are about, you can watch the video I made when I did a training event at my home for the hosts and facilitators. If you can t make the gathering in your neighborhood but wish to participate, let me know and I ll connect you to another. Finally, remember that this campaign is about your relationship with God, not about the church budget. If you have questions about the budget, ask me any time. Fall Stewardship Campaign Important Stewardship Dates to Remember October 25 The Fall Stewardship Campaign begins with a potluck lunch after church November 1-8 Neighborhood Gatherings Nov. 8 Youth-Led service on Sunday morning at 10am November 15 Ingathering Sunday Get those pledges in! On the Meaning of Stewardship Stewardship (Noun) 1. The position and duties of a steward, a person who acts as the surrogate of another, especially by managing property, financial affairs, an estate, etc. 2. The responsible oversight and protection of something of value We are all stewards of God s word as well as of St Andrew s Church. As we prayerfully consider how we respond to the goodness of God, let s remember that we are the keepers of the church. With our gifts of time, love, and money, we are giving to the church s work both here at St. Andrew s and in the community. St. Andrew s has financial commitments, but this is only part of the picture. The more important part is to bring God s word to others. It may be by serving food to the homeless, welcoming those who speak a different language, building homes for the less fortunate, or many other ways. This is the way of true stewardship. By helping others we are taking care of God s house literally as well as figuratively. Please pray and look into your heart and give so that we may all be good stewards. George Platt Growing in Discipleship In my years at St. Andrew s, my giving has been motivated by my need for St. Andrew s to succeed. This is my faith community; it must thrive so I can thrive in it. Recently, though, I ve realized that my kind of giving isn t stewardship. It isn t stewardship because it doesn t begin with the genuine, life-shaping understanding that all that I have is God s, not mine, and that what I do with it draws me closer to God. Pledging and fulfilling my pledge aren t a matter of budgeting, but a step toward a closer walk with Jesus. When I am trying to give more generously, more intentionally, more cheerfully, I m doing that not because St. Andrew s needs the money, although, of course, it does. I am giving because I am trying to live like a steward and thereby grow in my relationship with my Lord. Virginia Page 3
Mission and Community Engagement ~In the midst of so much activity, an invitation to reflect~ Be still, and know that I am God. Psalm 46:11 Our Catechism tells us on page 855 of the Book of Common Prayer that The Mission of the Church is to restore all people to unity with God and each other in Christ. From the Lectionary appointed for Thanksgiving Day: Do not worry, saying What will we eat? or What will we drink? or What will we wear?... But strive first for the Kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. (Matthew 6:31-33) Where and how have I witnessed restoration or healing taking place this past year, and who was involved? What is one part of my life (home, work, school) where Christ-like love, forgiveness or unity has been elusive? When I look about our community, where do I see or experience broken relationships or divisions? In what ways do I participate in divisions? How might God be calling me or St. Andrews to take part in restoring people to unity with God and each other? What are the things I worry about? Are these new, or do my worries cycle on an ongoing loop? CALENDAR What would it mean to interrupt my worries, out of gratitude for God s grace toward me? Who is one person that I ve been surprised to find myself working alongside for something meaningful this past year? What image of God s Kingdom (from parables or other parts of Scripture) resonates with me, and what does it look like when that image takes flesh in my life? What s going on with the Puerta Abierta/La Misa community? Where did the name for our house church community come from? And what does it mean to participate in this form of church life? Something special happens when we open the doors of the church so that we can leave that space in order to be church in other spaces (our living rooms, the streets, and taco shops, for example). St. Andrews EYC is teaming up with our Latino/a youth to become witnesses to Christ s love in St. Andrews wider parish. They began in October by walking and exploring the neighborhood where many of our Misas are celebrated. Practicing our familiar rituals in alternative settings, those places reserved for family or commerce, opens up a sense of Christ s presence in all aspects of our lives. Puerta Abierta means open door in Spanish. In his ministry, Jesus and his disciples depended on the hospitality of others, doors being opened to them, as they went from place to place healing, preaching and proclaiming the Kingdom of God come near. To start a new youth group in the Misa neighborhood, we ve had to approach another church to ask for space ~ they agreed immediately and thanked us for giving them the chance to open their doors to their immigrant neighbors! In this ministry, each person has the chance to open their door for others and the chance to know the grace of a door opening for him or her. Christ is calling us to a ministry of openness, to each other and to the world. Page 5
Worship Announcements Service of remembrance Nov. 1 Our annual Service of Remembrance will be held in the Chapel on Sunday, Nov. 1st, following the 10:00 service and will begin approximately 11:15/11:30. This brief service offers an opportunity to gather together in remembrance and gratitude for loved ones we've lost, whether it be recent or more in the past. Upcoming holiday times can add to the challenges of grief and this special service is intentional in providing meaningful acknowledgement of your loved one's life in a supportive and uplifting way. Community Thanksgiving service November 23 The people of St. Andrew s are invited to join with neighborhood churches on Monday, Nov. 23 in a service of worship and thanksgiving at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church. The service starts at 7pm and will be followed by a reception. The Ministry of the Deacon Since the earliest beginnings of the church, Deacons have played a crucial role in both leadership within the churches and beyond, caring alike for the faithful and those in need beyond the church doors. Deacons are mentioned in scripture, and have been present in the church throughout the centuries. The Episcopal Church has been re-claiming this vital ministry in recent years. Bishop Curry has expressed a dream of placing a deacon in every church in the diocese, with the idea that each deacon would be like a St. Francis or a St. Clare at the heart of each parish. With a Francis or a Clare in every church, he said, the church will become a more compassionate and healing witness to the presence of Christ. Deacons are an ordained ministry, but just one of the four orders of ministry (Bishop, Priest, Deacon and Layperson). They are not paid by the church they serve, and often have full-time jobs apart from their church service. They are not hired by the church as priests are, but rather placed in the church by the Bishop. The job description for the deacon can be found in the ordination vows on page 543 in the Book of Common Prayer: a deacon is to serve all people, particularly the poor, the weak, the sick, and the lonely, to make Christ and his redemptive love known, (and) to interpret to the Church the needs, concerns, and hopes of the world. For the past 9 months, Rick Sigler has served as an intern at St. Andrew s. He has been discerning a call to this role, to be one who interprets to the church the needs, concerns, and hopes of the world, and we have been blessed by his presence. His term ends at the end of October. We are also marking a new beginning as St. Andrew s welcomes the Rev. Brooks Johnson, who was placed at St. Andrew s by Bishops Curry and Hodges-Copple. This is something new (yet ancient) that we ll learn about together. I pray that Brooks will strengthen our witness while growing our commitment to service to the people of God. BJ+ Page 13
