APRIL 3, 2016 "You believe in me, Thomas, because you have seen me, says the Lord: Blessed are they who have not seen me, but still believe!" John 20 Dear Parishioners and Friends, We continue in the Easter Season with Divine Mercy Sunday. There will be a special Day of Mercy celebration at Sacred Heart Cathedral this Sunday afternoon beginning at 2:30pm with Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and Sung Chaplet of the Divine Mercy at 3:00pm. The Sacrament of Reconciliation will be made available with visiting priests and an opportunity to travel through the official Cathedral Holy Door. A brief summary of the Extraordinary Year of Mercy is reprinted from Fr. Shatzel below. May God bless you this week! Fr. Gonyo * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * From the Desk of Father Shatzel... THE JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY HISTORY: Israelites in the Old Testament were to keep the Jubilee Year every 50 years (see Leviticus 25:8-55). Pope Boniface VIII opened the first Holy Year in 1300AD; traditions associated with the Holy Year developed over the next centuries (e.g. only in 1500 AD, did Pope Alexander VI open the first Holy Doors at the 4 major basilicas). POPE FRANCIS announced this Holy Year of Mercy on April 11, 2015, with his letter MISERICORDIAE VULTUS ( Jesus Christ is the face of the Father s mercy are the opening lines). The Year opened on December 8, 2015, when the Pope opened the Holy Door to St. Peter s in Rome. On December 13 th, he opened the Holy Door to his own cathedral in Rome, St. John Lateran. He also invited all the bishops of the world to open such doors in their own cathedrals. (e.g. Sacred Heart Cathedral here). PLENARY INDULGENCE: The remission of the temporal punishment due to sins already forgiven. Conditions: 1. Passing through one of the official Holy Doors 2. Reconciliation in confession 3. Receiving Holy Eucharist 4. Praying for the Pope and his intentions 5. Praying the Profession of Faith (The Creed). The Pope said, These indulgences may be for ourselves or for those who are deceased. LOGO: With the inscription Merciful like the Father (from the Gospel of Luke 6:36) was designed by Father Marko Rupnik with Jesus carrying lost humanity on his shoulders. HYMN: An official hymn was also commissioned for the Jubilee, Misericordes sicut Pater with lyrics by Father Eugneio Costa, SJ, and music by Paul Inwood. It has lyrics in Italian, English, Latin and French, and is sung in the Taizestyle of chant. MAJOR JUBILEE EVENTS (Just a Sampling): 1) For the Roman Curia ~ February 22 2) For Young Boys and girls ~ April 23-25 3) For Deacons ~ May 27-29 4) For Priests ~ June 1-3 5) For the sick and Disabled ~ June 10-12 6) For Catechists ~ September 23-25 7) Marian Jubilee October 8-9 CLOSING: Sunday, November 13 The closing of the 3 Roman basilica doors and ALL local cathedral doors throughout the world. Sunday, November 20 ~ the Pope closes the Holy Door at St. Peter s in Rome!! * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * BEREAVEMENT EVENING Thursday, April 21 at 7:00pm in the Gathering Space at Holy Trinity Church We are pleased to have guest speaker Suzanne Shady, a member of Assumption Parish and former Chaplain with Visiting Nurse Hospice and Unity Health, as our four Webster Parishes gather for this Bereavement Evening. Father is considering several dates in September or October as possible starting dates, either on Sundays or on Mondays. Unlike last year, this trip would be ONLY ONE WEEK in Rome (and not all over Italy) thus, less expensive and less moving around. Anyone interested, please see Father Shatzel SOON (let him know which week or dates are best for you). Father must confirm and book the dates during the first week of April your payments will come due later. For more information about the events of this Holy Year, visit the official Vatican website at: www.im.va * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * PARISH VISITATION ~ Do you have a loved one at home, in a nursing home, or hospital that is in need of a visit? Our pastoral staff is here for you. Federal privacy regulations make it difficult for our parish to be notified by the hospital when parishioners have been admitted so please call Mary Jo DiNoto at 671-1100 ext. 13 to let us know. St. Rita School Spirit of Learning Corner Did you know?... + Save the Date! St. Rita School is hosting a MOM's NIGHT OUT! Bring your mother, sisters, and girlfriends for a night of shopping fun without having to host a party. Just for the fun of it, St. Rita School will be hosting all of your favorite direct sales vendors such as Pampered Chef, Tastefully Simple, Thirty-One, Jamberry, and many more on Monday May 2 from 7:00-9:00pm. There will be snacks to share and a great night of fun. + Students and teachers head back to school this week after the Easter break. We pray that they come back safely and full of energy for the final three months of the school year. + If you would like to see some St. Rita School talent, head over to Community Arts Day at Webster Schroeder High School next Saturday, April 9. From 10:00am to 4:00pm. Webster will be showing off its artistic talent and St. Rita will be represented. + Our Lady of Mercy School for Young Women is happy to announce that St. Rita students Emma Spagnola and Abigail Epstein are scholarship recipients for the 2016-2017 school year. Emma and Abigail will be receiving Emerging Leadership Scholarships in the category of Character. Congratulations Emma and Abigail! * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE AN ALTAR SERVER? Any boy or girl in 4 th grade or older who has received their First Communion and made Reconciliation can become an altar server. Regular attendance at church, an ability to make a commitment, and a family that values worshipping together are all important characteristics of a successful server. Altar serving promotes responsibility, accountability, leadership and above all, teamwork. It is also a chance for young people to get to know other Catholic children, which helps reinforce moral and ethical values our children need to face the difficult issues in today s society. We will be offering an Altar Server Training Session and Refresher on Saturday, April 16 at 2:00pm in Church. A parent from each family is asked to attend. Sign-up sheets for the next set of schedules (May, June, & July) will be available at this event. Please RSVP to Elizabeth at ekwiatkowski@dor.org or call 671-1100 x 14. Pizza will be provided after the training!
