Advent is the beginning of the liturgical year for Christians. Advent is such a special time of year. The season is filled with gatherings and excitement, with concerts and parties, with surprises and presents and beauty and merriment. The season is filled with the Holy, with the anticipation and joy of the realization that God dwells among us, that the God we worship cares about us individually and collectively more deeply than we can fathom. This short, meaningful, season should be focused on Jesus Christ and the promise of hope and light he brings to the world. Throughout the month of December, we will be focusing our attention on that hope and light as we come together in Bible study, to share devotionals, to serve in a variety of mission opportunities, to join in a host of fellowship gatherings and of course, in worship. I hope you will join us and invite someone who hasn t felt or known the true meaning of Christmas for a long time, if ever. Rather than being distracted by all that will surround us this month, let us keep our focus on Jesus the Christ, the child born into humility who takes our faults and futures upon himself and allows us to be born again into the life God wills for us: a life of peace and reconciliation, a life of wholeness and hope, a life of abundance and joy. Let us prepare for his coming among us and welcome him. Let us live as people who know him as Savior and Lord and rejoice with the heavenly host. Gloria in excelsis Deo! Grace and peace, Fairfax F. EDUCATION ADVENT DEVOTIONAL The Advent Devotional is Peace, Hope, Light: Reflections on the Writings of C. S. Lewis. Whenever Lewis wrote, he wanted his words to reach people s hearts, not just their heads. Pick up your free devotional on Main Street beginning November 25. WEDNESDAY AM BIBLE STUDY Join us for an Advent Bible study and baked treats! In Isaiah 9:6, a divine utterance is given to us using four royal titles--wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace. These names are known to us because of Handel s Messiah. Throughout Advent we will discuss Names for the Messiah by best-selling author Walter Brueggemann, which ponders each title and considers how the people understood it then, how Jesus did or did not fulfill the title, and how Christians interpret Jesus as representative of that title. For more information contact Rev. Mike Samson: msamson@orchardpark.org Leader: Rev. Mike Samson Location: Room 115 Ongoing W 10:00 11:30 a.m. THURSDAY WOMEN S BIBLE STUDY On January 17, we will begin a ten-week study of The Promised One: Seeing Jesus in Genesis by Nancy Guthrie. Class will gather at 9:45, begin at 10:00 a.m. and end no later than 11:30 a.m.. The study includes weekly homework for personal study, group discussion, and a teaching video that emphasizes how the passage fits into the bigger story of redemptive history. The Promised One provides a fresh look at the book of Genesis, leading readers in discovering how its stories, symbols, people, and promises point to Christ. THE JOURNEY - DEEPER DISCIPLESHIP As you consider making New Year resolutions, are you taking God s plans for you into account? Beginning in January 2019 we are launching The Journey. The Journey provides a context and a process for an extended conversation about God, ourselves and where we fit in God s kingdom work in the world. Journey groups will be made up of about eight people and gather weekly for 60-90 minutes over approximately 22 weeks to experience together conversations, questions and processes that deepen and empower owr individual and collective spiritual formation. By focusing more intently on the ways in which God is at work in and through each person, we will seek to guide participants toward greater clarity around God s plan for them; as well as igniting participants toward greater influence for God s mission in the world. There is a fee to participate and the materials you receive are yours to keep. For more information, please contact Rev. Mike Samson: msamson@orchardpark.org Leader: Rev. Mike Samson AND Rev. Dr. Shelly Wood Location: TBD Beginning January TBD TBD INTERGENERATIONAL SUNDAY SCHOOL During the month of February, all those age 4 through 104 are invited to share in Sunday School together! Intergenerational ministry empowers those who gather to invest in God, their faith, and the faith of others. Each week will include a time to break bread together (snacks), study God s word together, play together and pray TOGETHER. We hope you will join us February Su-Su 10:10 a.m. Leader: Leann Pope Location: Lounge Jan 17 Mar 21 Th 10:00 11:30 a.m. 6 FIND MORE INFORMATION AT ORCHARDPARK.ORG
