From Fr. Jon Kirby THE IMPORTANCE OF THIRD SPACES er unification have been more communication, understanding, and reconciliation. [Adapted from American Distrust: Can the Country s Tribal Differences Be Bridged? By Kevin B. Sullivan, Commonweal, March 30, 2018] In this recent Commonweal article, Kevin Sullivan explores some of the issues at the root of our divided country saying that it is more than simply right and left politics. He cites the case of Bethlehem PA making the point that our politics is also anxiety driven. Bethlehem was once the second-largest producer of steel in the United States and the nation s largest ship builder. It provided the materials for our bridges, battleships, skyscrapers and factories all of which helped fuel the American capitalist superpower. But its wealth also nurtured community: workers came and built homes, schools, and churches, thereby building stable and fulfilling lives. Today it is all part of the great American rust-belt. Without their mills the once tight-knit towns have withered and declined, leaving their shrinking populations underemployed and anxious, even despairing about their prospects. Sullivan also points out that we are further divided by the how and where we live. This influences our politics by splitting us up by geography, ethnicity, religion, and class. All of this puts at risk our collective sense of identity. No group really feels dominant and each feels attacked and pitted against the other groups, not just for jobs and spoils, but for the right to define the nation s identity all of which leads to a zero-sum group competition. Along the same lines is the current rearranging of the country s ethnic and cultural composition. As the baby-boom generation ages, we are seeing changes in everything from our spoken languages to our foods and entertainment. He thinks this will continue to diversify leading to more regional and ideological divisions which can manifest themselves benignly in cultural debates or violently in supremacist groups or terrorists. In political terms these factors both cause and are affected by our gerrymandered electoral system, the electoral cycles and the political debates on Facebook and cable television. All of this paints the map of our country as a collection of red and blue states. And as Americans hunker down in their disparate camps, the possibilities for common ground are eroding. The standard solutions put forward for great- A deeper, and more worrisome analysis comes from the journalist, Andrew Sullivan [a different Sullivan], who sees drug-related escapism and the American struggle to make sense of a world made foreign by unfettered capitalism, globalization, and social dislocation as an important integral part. He says, Evermore-powerful market forces actually undermine the foundations of social stability, wreaking havoc on tradition, religion, and robust civil associations. They create a less human world. They make us less happy. They generate pain. The pain is alleviated by drugs which claimed more than 60,000 American lives last year more than all American combat deaths in the Vietnam War. The use of antidepressants in the US spiked 65 percent between 1999 and 2014. And it has been shown that mobilization is a big part of the political process, and depression affects political participation by pushing people out of social groups and keeping people from the electoral process. Thus, politics and elections alone cannot fix America s tribal differences or ease its social malaise, and the calls for continued discussion and understanding ultimately fall short. Andrew proposes that we look deeper for a solution namely to the churches and union halls, which in former times provided people with a place to gather and gave them a sense of belonging. These third spaces, or informal settings distinct from the home and workplace, instilled a combined sense of purpose that helped nourish the social fabric of 20th century life. They organized people and built the American middle class which helped make the US the richest country in the world. While the rapid advancements of modernity, globalization and technological progress have profoundly changed the American way of life, and have driven us deeper into sectarian groups and apathy-inducing social media platforms, another look at the importance of the labor movement might indeed help sooth some of our nation s tribal wounds and restore some sense of common ground. But even greater importance should be placed in church groups for there, besides the social/geographical common locus, we also find a communion of core values and beliefs the underpinning of any viable society. There we are indeed united, not just under one flag and one currency, but also under one God.
