KOZ Monthly Outdoor Training January: Survival Building Fire 7:30 Leader Meeting and Prayer time. This time is imperative and gives the leadership time to prepare their hearts for the meeting and time with the kids. Do not take this time lightly. Be on time, meet with God first. 8:30 Kids begin to arrive. Meet parents or guardian BEGINNING YOUR MEETING WITH KOZ STRUCTURE 8:45 Begin Meeting. All together say the American Pledge of Allegiance. KOZ Prayer: Lord, Thank you for making us strong and fierce warriors for you. We hunt, we fish and we share our faith with others. God Bless America. - Amen Work to get the boys to memorize the KOZ Prayer and use it as a tool for kids who have little experience in praying or are afraid to pray. (Before meals, before an adventure or other times as a reminder of who they are and what they represent). LEADING INTO YOUR OUTDOORS SKILLS TRAINING Leader s first questions/discussion. Outdoor Training Fire. One of the most important elements of survival is fire. The ability to make a fire is crucial in almost every survival situation. Talk about : Fire provides light. A small flame can be seen for miles. Fire can keep you warm. Fire keeps you busy. Fire can be used for cooking Materials Copyright 2016 - kidsoudoorzone.org - 9508 Chisholm Trail Austin, Texas 78748-512- 292-1113 1

Leader s first questions/discussion: Scripture Training LEADING INTO YOUR HEART TRAINING This Month's Scripture: Matthew 5:14-16, You are the light of the world. A city set on hill cannot be hidden; nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven. Leader s first questions/discussion, Bible training: What does fire or light have to do with your every day life? It s not like you are carrying a pack of matches with you or a lighter everywhere you go or are you? Have you ever met someone who you knew had something special about them but just were not sure what it was? When you are spending time with your KOZ brothers do you feel like you are in a special place? It is because you are. You are spending time with God and his family. The leaders have Jesus in their hearts and they want to share Him. He is the light and when you are at KOZ you are in that light. Do you know someone who is special that shines? What does having Jesus in your heart mean? Be thinking today, how do I shine at KOZ? NOTE: Let them talk leave time between when you say something and they can speak let it be silent for a while if you have to they grow close in times of quiet allow Him to come STOP & BEGIN OUTDOOR SKILLS TRAINING BEGIN OUTDOOR SKILLS TRAINING: IDEA TRAIL Things to do this month: Teach fire building. Purchase several Magnesium fire starter tools, magnifying glasses, steel wool and batteries and other fire building tools. Build bow and fireboard Collect up the proper tinder and fire materials. Cut down a tree with a chain saw. Teach how to properly make sure the fire has been extinguished. (VERY IMPORTANT) Be intentional about your time with the boys. Ask them how they are, how their family is, how school is going Then Listen! Materials Copyright 2016 - kidsoudoorzone.org - 9508 Chisholm Trail Austin, Texas 78748-512- 292-1113 2

*Note always add an EXTREME element to your KOZ day. Be creative. FIELD NOTES: Instruct on each tool as a group. Break the boys into teams and make a competition out of the fire starting. Not every team will be successful but some will. Be encouraging and know that there are lessons in the things we can t do as well as others or do not complete. Other places for good information and literature. Here are some sites where we have found great content of this lesson plan. The internet always has resources but be careful there are some bad sites with poor information. We do not endorse nor are we associated with any of the sites listed below. The information there may change as well. Boy Scouts: Wilderness Survival Manual - see online Scouting.org Graywolfsurvival.com Theartofmaniliness.com Wilderness College: Top Survival Lessons and Info - www.wildernesscollege.com/basic- survival- skills.html GOING OFF THE TRAIL THIS MONTH? IMPORTANT: Use the opening/use the close, prayer/ sit spots and prayer cards. All groups should use the foundational structure of KOZ each month. The starting, the prayer, sit spots etc. as a common element to every meeting. Everything from sledding to swimming, hiking to fly fishing. The key to going off the trail is to keep the structure in place. Get them outside move their bodies, adventure and exploration. Keep it exciting, keep it real, be intentional about bringing them into a relationship with Christ. OUTDOOR TRAINING CONCLUSIONS Ask pointed questions on the outdoor skills they learned today. Drive home a point What was your favorite part of KOZ today? Basic knowledge of fire skills is essential, what are some different ways to start a fire? What are the different elements/materials needed to start a fire? Materials Copyright 2016 - kidsoudoorzone.org - 9508 Chisholm Trail Austin, Texas 78748-512- 292-1113 3

What are different reasons you need a fire in a survival situation. SCRIPTURE TRAINING AND HEART TAKEAWAY This Month's Scripture: Matthew 5:14-16, You are the light of the world. A city set on hill cannot be hidden; nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven. Trail Map #1, Matthew 5:14-16 Believers in Jesus are lights in this dark world. The world around us is becoming more and more like the night. The fire that you have inside you will shine a light into the darkness if you let it. As you grow as a Christian, you can become a larger and larger light for Him. What are some ways you can grow your faith? (LET THEM THROW OUT THEIR IDEAS) Prayer, bible study, caring about others, being respectful, giving God the credit for good things, listening are all ways we can show others our Christian faith. What do you think about verse 15? What are reasons we can be tempted to put our light under a basket? LET THEM TALK. What do you think God wants us to shine our (His) light before others? LET THEM ANSWER. Remind them that God has called us to be light to this dark world. The fire he is building in us is just like a fire that is built slowly with leaves then sticks and then larger sticks and finally with logs. He wants us to build His fire in us so that we can be warmth, light, and even a beacon for others. RM Train Map #2, Matthew 5:14-16 Keep some of the supplies that you used to start the fire and set them aside to use as a visual lesson. As we close out the day we can t miss the lesson here; we all came into this world as sinners in need of a savior. We were spiritually dark in our sin. But Jesus was the spark that ignited a flame in our lives. In John 8:12 Jesus said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." In that moment when we gave our lives to Christ He lit a flame inside us and it is up to us tend the fire and make it grow. We are called to be Christlike and so we too are to be the light to the world. In our verse today we read that You are the light of the world so what does that mean for us. That means that we each are a fire we re each called to be that beacon of light to those who still haven t found Jesus. And this is where it s easy to get overwhelmed and think things like I can t do that! But what you have to remember is that just like this fire we all have to start somewhere. When we are new Christians we need the small tinder; that s where we learn to pray and start learning our KOZ bible verses and then like this fire we ll start to grow and we ll start using bigger logs and with that growth we build a better base in our lives Materials Copyright 2016 - kidsoudoorzone.org - 9508 Chisholm Trail Austin, Texas 78748-512- 292-1113 4

and then what happens to our fire? It starts burning brighter and our flame gets stronger. And what s one thing about a bigger fire? It s harder to put out. And that s what we all need to be striving for in our own lives a strong fire. We need to keep tending the fire and making it grow; but don t get discouraged it will take time, it will take work, and the devil will keep trying to blow it out but if we keep working and fanning the flame we will start seeing people drawn to Christ through us. WW Drive home a point What part of the bible lesson matches what we talked about in fire starting? How can you make your fire for Jesus bigger? What are some things you can do to keep your fire (belief in Jesus) from going out when things get hard in your life. We re all in a different place as a Christian so don t compare your fire to your buddies. Concentrate on your flame and feed your fire the fuel it needs to grow. REMIND THEM: God has made you as an amazing person. Individual, special and unique. If you have not heard that for a while, I want to tell you that. I care about you, you matter to me. Talk to me if you need to talk. EACH MONTH: Teach the boys: BE STRONG - Jeremiah 29:11, For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. He (Jesus) cares about you, you matter, your KOZ leaders care about you. THE SIT SPOT AND GOD SIT SPOT Purpose: Pass out a blank index card and pen. Tell them if they want you to pray for them or something going on to please write it on the card and you will pray for them this week. It is a private prayer between your leaders and them, they don't have to put their name on the card. If they don't have a prayer, tell them to just put their name on the cards. TO PONDER: Give the boys something to ponder, use the questions above, and ask them to go to a sit spot - let them stay while you prepare lunch (quietly without distracting the quiet moment) - (15-30 min.) SEND LEADERS TO SIT SPOTS! If a leader is not assigned a task have them also find a sit spot. It is good for the boys to see the adult leaders doing the same as they are asked to do. QUIET TIME IS ESSENTIAL. Materials Copyright 2016 - kidsoudoorzone.org - 9508 Chisholm Trail Austin, Texas 78748-512- 292-1113 5

CALL BACK FOR LUNCH - While they are eating lunch LUNCH & KOZ LEADERSHIP TAG GUIDANCE WORK ON DOG TAGS Ask boys if they are working toward KOZ TAGS. Greenhorn, Coyote, LIT, HTL. This is a good time to teach this material. Print their cards and have them ready. Ask if any of the boys are new give them their KOZ Nation dog tag (the first one) GIVE A BOY HIS NAME IN KOZ We have found that giving boys a nickname is a huge tool for them. Giving a boy a New Name has been a game changer for many. A strong, fierce name is important. Jesus and His Father both gave new names. Ask prayerfully what name a boy should have. The leaders decide NOT the boys. It is an honor bestowed, even if funny. As you wait for the parents to arrive: Tell the boys you love them. That they are important. That if they have not prayed to ask Christ into their hearts to come talk to a KOZ HTL (ROMANS 10:9). If a kid wants to be baptized, have them talk to you about it - you can do it somewhere really cool! Perform a service project on site. Teach the boys to ALWAYS leave your area BETTER than it was when you got there. Parents arrive. Greet them and tell them how good their kid did. Tell the boys to invite a friend! Hand out literature or take home materials... A gallon plastic Zip lock bag with their name on it works great each month to collect their take home materials.
