Notes from AGM Meeting held at the Mens Shed. The Rotary Club of Daylesford held their AGM meeting last Wednesday at the Men's Shed, and it well attended by Members. A relaxed atmosphere prevailed throughout the proceedings and everyone had a good time. The various reports were delivered with eloquence and enthusiasm by the appropriate board members. President Greg spoke about the challenges he faced as an incoming president with little Rotary experience but how much he had enjoyed his time as president. He spoke about the challenges facing the club such as maintaining and increasing membership. He will hand over to incoming president, David Stagg in July 2016. Bronwen Scarffe spoke on behalf of International Projects and encourage the club to continuing support for projects such as East Timor and Cambodia. Secretary Lesley multitasked throughout the evening delivering her annual report and preparing the dinner with able assistant, Ben. She was been nominated, and elected unopposed to undertake the Club Presidency for the year 2017-2018. The problem for the club will how to replace Secretary Lesley when the time comes to take up her new role. Finally, a special thanks to Ben and Lesley for their tasty catering. Treasurer Alan was re-elected unopposed as Club Treasurer for 2016-2017. It is just as well as it is hard to see anyone-else doing as well as Alan in the role. Alan delivered his report showing that the club had delivered 76% of all moneys raised directly to community and international projects. Considering that the other 24% is mostly spent locally on consumables (such as new equipment, consumables and such) it could be said that 100% is returned one way or another. These are figures that very few charitable organisations could claim. Sergeant Ron spoke about the January 13 th bowling night at Daylesford Bowling Club and said that we should hold at least 3 regular meetings there to honour the deal secured for the cost of the meal to Rotary members and guests attending. Various meeting formats were discussed over how meal downstairs and meeting upstairs could be managed. Secretary Lesley delivers her report. Service Projects Director, Victor, reported on the new equipment acquisitions by the club; the new marquee, new BBQ etc. and acknowledged the work done by the committees: the Artober and Art Show, Farmers Markets, Schools Music Night and more. Foundation Director Danny talked about the Christmas Cheer Appeal and the Santa Run for Fun taking place on 6 th December. He encouraged all members to take part. He further reported on the great donations coming in for the appeal and the Money Spinner at Coles. He suggested that we drop a gold coin in spinner each time we shop at Coles. Treasure Alan

The l6 year-old talked to Dora Kelly about what it s like to be an exchange student from France. DK: Why did you want to come to Australia? CE: Good question. Australia is a country which makes me dream since a lot of years ago. I don t know why exactly. I want to discover a new culture and as Australia is one of the further countries from France. I think the culture should be very different than mine. Moreover, the landscapes are so different, I wanted to see that once in my life. I could go to a lot of countries for this year but, I don't know,
for me the Australian culture seemed the most interesting to discover for a year. DK: What did your family feel about you coming here? CE: At the beginning my family didn't want to let me go but when they understood that it was seriously one of my dreams to discover a new country for a long time, they supported me. Now, I know that it wasn t easy for them to let me go to the other side of the world but they are proud of me because this is like a challenge and, they are just happy for me to make my dream come true. They also know that this year will be very beneficial for me so, this is why they let me go I think. DK: Did you choose Daylesford? CE: I didn't choose Daylesford. When I wanted to go on an exchange program with the RotaryInternational, I had to choose three different countries and after that, the Rotary chose for me my final destination, my city and my host families. Now, I know that I will stay around Daylesford during my year and I am so happy because I love this town. DK: What are your thoughts/impressions so far? What's good, what's bad, what's strange? CE: Well, I think nothing can be strange, just different. Since I arrived in Australia, for now, nothing was bad, I like everything I did since my arrival. I go to school in Daylesford Secondary College in year 11 and a lot of things are different. In France I can't speak with my friends in class, I can't have my phone with me, I can't stand up when I want for example, here it is the opposite and at the beginning it was very "strange" (as you said...) for me because I wasn't accustomed. The same for the school uniform, I don't have to wear a uniform in France so the first day at school, I had the impression that I was dressed up with curious clothes. DK: Oh, do you like Vegemite? CE: Vegemite... What can I say about Vegemite? No, I didn't like it! Too salty for me, I cannot understand people who eat it for the breakfast! Maybe I didn't eat it as a real Australian eats it. I have to try again but try once was enough for me I think... DK: Where have you been so far? CE: For now, I have been in Melbourne, a very different city than Paris, I loved it. To the MCG and in Caulfield Racecourse, it was amazing. AIso, I take dance lessons in Ballarat. The rest of the time I go to Daylesford or Eganstown where I live. DK: What's a typical school day for you in France? CE: I start school at 8:30 am most of the time and have classes until 5pm. That's crazy I know, our school days are very long... At school, the next year I will study biology, physics and chemical, mathematics, philosophy, English, Spanish; history and geography and another biology class - more specialised. After a day at school, we have a lot of homework so, we don t have a time to do something else or have a job for example, This is impossible. This is why I can say that here in Australia, I love school. It could be the only time in my life where I can say that I love school but that's the truth. DK: What da you hope to gain from the experience? CE: From this experience, I hope to become more mature, to know more about myself. I would like to be able to have another point of view about the world and don't think that French culture is the only way to live because all cultures are different to each other. And of course, I hope I will improve my English. DK: How's the Australian accent? CE: I think Australian accent is very strong so, sometimes even when I know the original words, just because of the accent I can't understand when people speak. Moreover Australian people have a lot of sayings or they cut words to speak faster so, it is not easy for me. DK: Have you felt homesick yet? CE: Just once, but not a lot. One day I missed my sister so, I didn't feel very well this day but it was just a little bit. In France, my family and I are very close so before to go to Australia I thought that I will be homesick a lot but strangely I am not at all. Thanks to internet I can text my family everyday so I don't have impression that I am far of them. DK: Thanks for your time. Sounds like it's all going to plan. Oh, anything else you would like to add? CE: Not really, just tell to the students who are interested to go on a gap YEAR after college or on a exchange program as mine and who are not sure that they have some apprehensions, that they shouldn't hesitate. One year is very short when you would like to discover a new culture and, if they don t do it now maybe they won't be able to do it in the future so, go. That's an amazing experience that more peopleshould try and this is very beneficial to have work in the future when you had an experience like this one. www.tlnews.com.au
