SANSKRIT CLASSES AND KARTHIKA PURNIMA CELEBRATIONS NOVEMBER 20, 2016

Samskrita Sambhashana Shibiram at Vyakhya Arsha Vidya Vahini organized a 9-day Spoken Sanskrit Course (Level-1) at Vyakhya Center for Vedanta Studies from the 1 st to 10 th of November 2016. These classes were conducted by Sri Viriventi Subrahmanyam ji, a doctorate scholar in Sanskrit and the Deputy Director at the Sanskrit Academy in Osmania University, Hyderabad. These classes were conducted exclusively for the students of the Vedanta Course to provide a basic introduction to structure of Sanskrit that enables an ease in the study of Vedantic Scriptures. Inaugurating these classes, Pujya Acharya blessed us with an Anugraha Bhashanam in Sanskrit. He said that a basic knowledge of Sanskrit is always essential for studying the Shastra and more importantly to understand our cultural heritage. This is because our glorious heritage has its foundation in the traditional Hindu scriptures like the Vedas and the Puranas that are in Sanskrit.

It was a blessing and immense encouragement to the students with Pujya Acharya Sri Prem Siddharth ji also gracing these classes. The 35 students participated with utmost enthusiasm in these interactive classes under the able guidance of Sri Subramanyam ji. Every evening, after the class, Pujya Swamiji revised the lesson of the day with tips and hints to learn Sanskrit that were helpful in remembering the grammatical rules and understanding their application better. Towards the conclusion of these Sanskrit sessions, many of the students who had no previous association with the language had an increased familiarity and a gradual loss of fear to converse in Sanskrit. AVV plans to conduct such regular classes each month for the students to progress further. These classes were conducted with the co-operation of Samskrita Bharati, an organization that is dedicated to the propagation of the Sanskrit Language. It is notable that all of the students who had attended these sessions will be participating in the preliminary level Sanskrit examination in the upcoming year, 2017.

Karthika Purnima Celebrations Karthika Purnima was celebrated at Vyakhya Center for Vedanta Studies in the evening on the 14th of November (Monday). This annual prayer tradition was initiated by Pujya Acharya for the benefit of all the students. On this holy occasion, the students offer their prayers to Lord Shiva and seek His grace in their Sadhana. Under the aegis of Pujya Acharya Sri Prem Siddharthi ji maharaj the devotees offered Ekadasha Rudrabhishekam to Lord Shiva. Sri Raghunatha Sastry ji, a Vedic Scholar and a close disciple of Sri Jagadguru Sankaracharya of ri Hari Harapura Mutt, Karnataka has offered a befitting Asanam to Pujya Acharya as an expression of devotion. This Asanam was graciously accepted by Pujya Acharya Swamiji on this holy occasion. The students paid obeisance to the Guru Parampara by chanting Guru Stotram.

Ganapati Puja marked the auspicious beginning of the Karthika Purnima celebrations. Students chanted Sri Rudram 11 times; each repetition of Namakam and an Anuvakam in Chamakam was concluded by Shiva sankeerthanam and arathi. As devotees chanted Sri Rudram, abhishekam was offered to Lord Shiva by Smt Jyothsna Mataji and for each repetition of Sri Rudram, different auspicious dravyas like Ganga Jalam, Panchamritams, Kumkuma Jalam, Haridra Jalam, Chandana Jalam, Narikela jalam & Bhasma Abisekham were offered to the Shiva. Each time, the Shuddha Sphatika Shiva Linga was bathed in a myriad of colours which was a sight to behold.

After the 4 hour long abhishekam, Panchopachara Puja was offered along with the chanting of Vedic mantras, Shiva Ashtottaram, Sri Dakshinamurthy Stotram and Mantrapushpam. As Aarathi was being offered, it was a splendid sight to behold the flower adorned Shiva Linga in the flames of the Eka Aarathi, Kumbha Aarathi and Nakshatra Aarathi etc., Once the puja was concluded, Pujya Acharya blessed the devotees with abhisekha jalam and vibhooti and they partook the prasadam of Lord Mahadeva.
