Vol III October 2015 No. 10 Dear Rev. Fathers, Brothers and Sisters, 1. MONTH OF OCTOBER This month is known as the month of the Holy Rosary and therefore is dedicated to the recitation of the Holy Rosary. The feast of the Holy Rosary is celebrated on 07 October. As is the custom, devotees of Our Lady gather around her Grotto to pray the Rosary all these 31 days of the month for peace in the world and forgiveness of sins through her powerful intercession. Hence, I request you dear Fathers to continue this devotion during this month of October by encouraging your parishioners to pray it daily in respective homes, before the celebration of the daily Eucharist in our churches and chapels and wherever there is the custom, before the Grotto of Our Lady. The month of October is a good time to commit to praying the rosary every day. There are some great ways to celebrate the month of the Holy Rosary in the following manner: 1. Pray the Rosary every day in the month of October especially for Priests. Even though the year for Priests and Consecrated People has come and will go, still they are in need of your constant prayers. 2. Make it a point to attend Mass every day in October especially on 7 October, the feast of the Holy Rosary. 3. Encourage children and the youth of your Parish to pray the Rosary by distributing it to them so that each one of them has a personal rosary. 4. Wherever possible, the recitation of the decade of the Rosary be combined with a short reflection of the mystery as narrated in the Gospel. 1

This way, let us celebrate the month of October, the month of the Holy Rosary honouring our Heavenly Mother so that through her intercession peace may prevail everywhere and unity and harmony may be promoted among people of all walks of life. 2. ESTABLISHMENT OF THE DIOCESE OF UDUPI On 15 October 2015, our Diocese will complete three years of its establishment and my installation as first Bishop of Udupi. Let us raise our hearts and minds to God our loving Father for all His countless blessings, benevolence and mercies showered upon us having made us instruments of His Proclamation and Evangelization and given us the courage and grace to witness Him through the Pastoral Plan of a Mission 2025 which has been gaining momentum throughout this Diocese showing concrete and positive results. I thank you dear Rev. Fathers for its implementation with an appeal to make it further effective, meaningful and mission oriented, so that its vision and objectives would be rightly placed and understood and our common mission and mandate to be proclaimers of the Word of God and His evangelizers, carried forward through us. I also request you to pray for me so that the shepherding ministry entrusted to me and which I assumed this day trusting in Divine Providence and His mercy through the intercession of Our Lady of Miracles (Milagres) may truly be devoted and dedicated to His greater glory and the spreading of His Kingdom here on earth. 3. GOOD NEWS CORDIAL INVITATION On the completion of three years of the establishment of Udupi Diocese, proposal was made from several quarters to take up our immediate and urgent projects and therefore, it gives me great joy to announce to each and every one of you that on 15 October 2015, Foundation Stones will be blessed for the following projects of this Diocese, i.e. Pastoral Centre, Minor Seminary and Home for Retired Priests. The blessing ceremony will take place in the Diocesan land near Kinnimulki for these three projects at 10.00 am. I hereby extend to you dear Fathers a cordial invitation to be a part of this ceremony along with your respective Parish Pastoral Council Vice President and Secretary as representatives of the PPC, without fail. Please treat this 2

as my personal invitation to you and extend the same on my behalf to the Vice President and Secretary of your PPC. I have already invited the members of the Diocesan Pastoral Council during the meeting on 24 September 2015 and hence I request you to convey the same to those members from your parish. I request you to inform your parishioners about these projects and the blessing ceremony and to pray for the successful completion of these projects. 4. MISSION SUNDAY The Church all over the world will be celebrating Mission Sunday on 18 October this year with the theme Consecrated life and mission. At a time when more and more hurdles are placed in the church s missionary role and activities making it difficult to proclaim the Gospel and evangelize people of all nations, the Church still undauntedly marches forward to realize the command of our Lord Jesus Christ to be His witness to people of all walks of life everywhere. We need therefore to storm heaven with our prayers and sacrifices to support the missionaries, missions and mission activities so that the Gospel of Christ continues to be proclaimed and witnessed in spite of opposition to missionary activities and imprisonment and torture of missionaries. Besides our prayers and sacrifices, as every year, let us come forward to offer our financial assistance meant exclusively for this purpose. I am truly aware of the great interest and enthusiasm each one of you are taking to put up to make this Sunday successful and meaningful. Last year our diocesan contribution to the missions was Rs. 43,50,735/- (forty three lakhs plus) and we stood 8 th (rank) out of 169 Dioceses in India. I thank you for this honour and achievement. Please invite your parishioners to be generous towards the cause of the missions through their precious prayers, sacrifices and contributions. Thank you. Please see the annexure on page 7 for Mission Sunday message of the Holy Father, Pope Francis. 5. KARNATAKA REGIONAL CONVENTION Our Diocese has been chosen to host the Karnataka Regional Convention for YCS/YSM which will take place in Kannarpady, Udupi at St Mary s English Medium School from 18 to 20 October 2015. The Director of our Youth Commission, Rev. Fr Edwin D Souza will 3

provide you with necessary details of the three days programme inviting you to participate and also those YCS/YSM members from your respective parishes and educational institutions under your care. A Convention of this magnitude involves a lot of expenditure and hence, I request you to please support the Organizers of this Convention with your presence, prayers and financial assistance by sponsoring one activity or the other thereby making this, our Convention meaningful, memorable, successful and eventful. 6. FAITH FORMATION CAMP As every year, during October holidays, our Catholic children need to be invited to participate in the Faith Formation Camps which take palce every year at the deanery level. I consider these camps as very essential and important, nay indispensable. Hence, Catholic children from 8, 9 and 10 std are to be invited to participate in this camp without fail. I know that this is a herculean task to motivate students to take a liking and interest in a camp like this. Stronger are they in their Catholic Faith, firmer will be the Christian marriages and families and those who will join for priesthood and religious life. So I appeal to you dear Fathers to do everything within your capacity to make every child child attend these camps without fail. Entrusting you to the intercession of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary and invoking God s abundant blessings upon you, Yours sincerely in Christ, Gerald I Lobo Bishop of Udupi 4
