A person must understand the Bracha and actually articulate the words with awareness of its meaning. This is no small task. In fact, mastering the art of reciting Brachot with Kavana is a lifelong endeavor. Part A. Involving the Mind It is not enough to just recite a Bracha; one has to say it with intent, understand the words, and be mindful of its inner meaning. The Shulchan Aruch instructs us, While reciting Brachot, one must be cognizant of the simple meaning of the words. The Mishna Berura adds, As our sages teach, One should not throw a Bracha from one s mouth. Rather, one should concentrate and say the Bracha slowly. Regarding this issue of saying Berachot by rote, the Sefer HaChasidim, writes, One should not conduct himself like those who perform by rote, and utter with their mouths without thought and feeling. About this matter God became angry at his people and told us through the prophet Isaiah, For this nation approached Me with their mouth, and with their lips did they honor Me, but their hearts were far from Me. While it is important not to say Berachot by rote, we want more than that; we want to internalize the Berachot. Rabbi Hadar Margolin,in his book Besimcha U Vetuv Levav, describes it thusly: A Bracha should be said in a way that all of one s senses, capabilities, thoughts and ideas, his whole being, are focused on the Bracha. It is not said under the duress of time, trying to rush to finish it; it is not recited while the mind is even slightly distracted; rather one must be totally immersed in the Bracha and its meaning, and in the wish to assimilate, internalize and live that which his mouth and lips are expressing. A person should strive to have as much Kavana as possible. There is virtually no limit to the potential growth in this area. One of our greatest leaders in the last century, Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Auerbach, was visited daily for advice, blessing, and encouragement by people from all walks of life. One day a man who was suffering a serious illness approached Rabbi Auerbach to ask his advice on how to invoke Divine mercy to spare his life. I am unworthy of advising definitively on such a serious issue, he replied. However, I will tell you what I would do in such a situation. I would strengthen myself in the reciting of Brachot, making sure to enunciate each word carefully and clearly and with the proper concentration. If I were to succeed in that, concluded the sage, that would be for me a great accomplishment. Now, it is well known that Rabbi Auerbach was always particularly careful with his Brachot and said them with much concentration and mindfulness. So much so, people would come just to observe him utter a Bracha and would be duly uplifted as they watched this holy man connect with his Creator in a deep, meaningful way. Nevertheless, he would still strengthen himself constantly in this area. Even in the last year of his long life (which is when this incident happened) he felt that there was room for improvement and growth. It seems there is no limit to the levels of perfection and growth in the purity of heart and mind that can be attained in the recitation of a simple Bracha. This Day In Jewish History - 20 Oct / 11 Cheshvan 11 Cheshvan, 2106 B.C.E. - Exactly seven says before the beginning of the Great Flood, Noach s grandfather, Methuselach, dies at the age of 969, making him the longest-living human being of all time. Geneologocial experts will note that as Noach s grandfather, Methuselach was also the great-great-great-great-great grandson of Adam. 11 Cheshvan, 1554 B.C.E. - While giving birth to her second son, Binyamin, Jewish Matriarch Rachel, the beloved wife of Ya akov, dies and is buried on the road to Bethlehem. The site of her burial, south of Jerusalem, is covered by a stone edifice and is known to us as Rachel s Tomb. Legend has it that Ya akov prophecized that Jewish exiles would pass by on that road and Rachel might seek mercy for them. And, for thousands of years, Jews have come to the site to pray and awaken her merit in times of distress. October 20, 1930 - British Colonial Secretary Lord Passfield (Sidney Webb), issues the anti-zionist Passfield White Paper, further limiting Jewish immigration to Palestine and severely criticizing the Histadrut (General Federation of Labor) and the Jewish Agency. The Paper condemned both organizations for promoting Jewish employment of Jewish labor and concluded that the sale of land to Jews who were emigrating to Palestine was damaging to the economy of the Arab population and should be restricted. 11 Cheshvan, 1973 - New York City elects its first Jewish Mayor, Abraham D. Beame. Born Abraham David Birnbaum in London, Beame was New York s 104th Mayor, from 1974 to 1977, the year s of New York s financial crisis during which it was nearly forced to declare bankruptcy. Beame died in 2001 at the age of 94. October 20, 1981 - Just before the start of Simchat Torah services, a truck bomb explodes outside a Portuguese synagogue in the center of Antwerp, Belgium. One person dies and eighty are injured as the explosion blows in the doors and stainedglass windows of the synagogue, and smashes storefronts for blocks around. The Palestinian terror group Black September claims responsibility for the attack. Refuah Shelayma Please include the following names in your prayers. May each be granted a Refuah Shelayma.
