Page 2 of 5 Share It was a beautiful day as the 2010 prep track and field season kicked off at Corvallis on Saturday, with athletes from all over western Montana shaking off winter's rust. The Corvallis boys track team picked up right where they left off last season, winning the annual Gene Hughes Invitational track and field meet on their home turf. The defending state champion Blue Devil boys dominated the points standings, racking up 130 points. Thompson Falls came in second at 78, with Polson third at 76, Darby with 64 and Hamilton at 48. "We're where we want to be right now," said Corvallis boys head coach Spencer Huls. "The boys are looking solid. The girls team is really young this year. I think we can be pretty solid by the end of the year." Mahlone Jessop picked up two individual victories in the 100 meters (11.65 seconds) and the 200 (23.72). Austin Landis won the javelin for Corvallis with a 189-9. Devon Jessop won the discus with a 130-7 hurl, and the Blue Devil relay teams won the 400 and 1,600. "We lost quite a few state points on the boys team from losing kids to graduation last year," Huls said. "But we have a lot of younger kids that we are expecting to step up this year. Hopefully we can replace those kids that we lost. We're looking pretty solid top to bottom." On the girls side, the Hamilton Lady Broncs came in second place with 108 points behind firstplace Polson at 145 points. Kelsey Almond won the 100 meter in 13 seconds flat, while Misha Trotter won the 800 meter in 2:25.97. The Stevensville Lady Yellowjackets came in third with 75 points, while the Darby girls placed fourth at 56 points and Corvallis placed fifth with 47. The Darby Tigers had a good showing from Seth Garbett and Heather Demorest. Garbett won the 1,600 in 4:36.03 and the 3,200 in 10:14. Both races were exciting to watch as Corvallis junior Chris Jessop nipped at his heels in both races to finish second. Demorest also won two events, the 1,600 and 3,200. Doug Raymer of Darby won the 800 with 2:02.82. The next meet in Corvallis is the Bob Reed invite May 1. The Frenchtown Time Trials are next weekend.
