MARON MARONITE CATHOLIC CHURCH Fourth Sunday After Epiphany Revelation of Christ s Mystery to John the Baptist February 3, 2019 The story of the woman at the well is one of the most well known in the Bible. On its surface, the story chronicles ethnic prejudice and a woman shunned by her community. But look deeper, and we will realize it reveals a great deal about Jesus character. Above all, the story suggests that Jesus is a loving and accepting God, and we should follow his example. The story begins as Jesus and his disciples pass through Samaria. Tired and Thirsty, Jesus sat by Jacob s well while his went to a nearby village to buy food. It was about noon, the hottest part of the day, and a Samaritan woman came to the well at this inconvenient time to draw water. During his encounter with the woman at the well, Jesus broke three cultural customs. Firstly, he spoke to her despite the fact that she was a woman. Second she was a Samaritan woman, and the Jews traditionally despised Samaritans. And third, he asked her to get him a drink of water, although using her cup or jar would have made him ceremonially unclean. Jesus behavior shocked the woman at the well. But as if that weren t enough, he told the woman he could give her living water so that she would never thirst again. Jesus used the words living water to refer to eternal life, the gift that would satisfy her soul s desire only available through him. At first, the Samaritan woman did not fully understand Jesus meaning. Although they had never met before, Jesus revealed that he knew she d had five husbands and was now living with a man who was not her husband. He had her full attention! As Jesus and the woman discussed their views on worship, the woman voiced her belief that the Messiah was coming. Jesus answered, I who speak to you am he. As the woman began to grasp the reality of her encounter with Jesus, the disciples returned. They too were shocked to find him speaking to a woman. Leaving behind her water jar, the woman returned to town, inviting the people to Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did. Excited by what the woman told them, the Samaritans came and begged Jesus to stay with them. Jesus stayed two days, teaching the Samaritans about the Kingdom of God. The Samaritans proclaim Jesus to be the Savior of the world. To fully grasp the story of the woman at the well, it is important to understand who the Samaritans were. They were a mixed race people. They were hated by the Jews because of this cultural mixing and because they had their own version of the Torah and their own temple on Mount Gerizim The Samaritan woman Jesus met faced prejudice from her own community. She came to draw water at the hottest part of the day, instead of the usual morning or evening times, because she was shunned and rejected by the other women of the area for her immorality. Jesus knew her history but still accepted her and ministered to her. By reaching out to the Samaritans, Jesus showed that his mission was to all people, not just the Jews. Our human tendency is to judge others because of stereotypes, customs, or prejudices. Jesus treats people as individuals, accepting them with love and compassion. Do we dismiss certain people as lost causes, or do we see them as valuable in their own right, worthy of knowing about the Good News of God s Kingdom? In Case of Emergency Only: 216-333-0760 Rev. Brothers and sisters, Do you not know, brothers and sisters for I am speaking to those who know the law that the law is binding on a person only during that person s lifetime? Thus a married woman is bound by the law to her husband as long as he lives; but if her husband dies, she is discharged from the law concerning the husband. Accordingly, she will be called an adulteress if she lives with another man while her husband is alive. But if her husband dies, she is free from that law, and if she marries another man, she is not an adulteress. In the same way, my friends, you have died to the law through the body of Christ, so that you may belong to another, to him who has been raised from the dead in order that we may bear fruit for God. While we were living in the flesh, our sinful passions, aroused by the law, were at work in our members to bear fruit for death. But now we are discharged from the law, dead to that which held us captive, so that we are slaves not under the old written code but in the new life of the Spirit. Praise be to God always! Jacob s well was there, and Jesus, tired out by his journey, was sitting by the well. It was about noon. A Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus said to her, Give me a drink. The Samaritan woman said to him, How is it that you, a Jew, ask a drink of me, a woman of Samaria? (Jews do not share things in common with Samaritans) Jesus answered her, If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, "Give me a drink", you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water. The woman said to him, Sir, you have no bucket, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water? Are you greater than our ancestor Jacob, who gave us the well, and with his sons and his flocks drank from it? Jesus said to her, Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but those who drink of the water that I will give them will never be thirsty. The water that I will give will become in them a spring of water gushing up to eternal life. 'The woman said to him, Sir, give me this water, so that I may never be thirsty or have to keep coming here to draw water. 'Jesus said to her, Go, call your husband, and come back. The woman answered him, 'I have no husband. Jesus said to her, You are right in saying, "I have no husband"; for you have had five husbands, and the one you have now is not your husband. What you have said is true! The woman said to him, Sir, I see that you are a prophet. Our ancestors worshipped on this mountain, but you say that the place where people must worship is in Jerusalem. Jesus said to her, Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father seeks such as these to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth. The woman said to him, I know that Messiah is coming (who is called Christ). When he comes, he will proclaim all things to us. 'Jesus said to her, I am he, the one who is speaking to you. This is the truth! Peace be with you.

Throughout the world February 3 is the memorial of St. Blasé, but in the Holy Land, February 3, the day after the Presentation, is the dual commemoration of Saints Simeon and Anna. Saint Luke mentions a number of praiseworthy spiritual characteristics of this remarkable woman. Seven years married. In this case, the number seven is not to be taken literally, but metaphorically. Seven represents perfection. When Anna was married, she was the perfect wife, completely faithful to her husband, loving, generous, and kind. Age 84. Anna was advanced in years. Biblically, a long life is regarded as a reward from God for living a good and holy life. Sarah lived to be 127 (Gn 23:1), and Judith, who also was a longtime widow after the death of her husband Manasseh, lived to be 105 (Jdt 16:23). Anna was virtuous, honest, blameless, and respectable, an outstanding example of righteousness. She never left the temple. After the death of her husband, Anna could have stayed home, depressed and withdrawn, but after a period of grief and mourning, she decided to re-engage, to get up and get going, and instead of remaining in her home she went to God s house. By doing so, she imitated her namesake, Hannah, who Collection: January 27, 2019 GENERAL DEPOSIT $ 30,341.86 Sunday Collection $ 1,326.00 Second Collection $ 540.00 Votive Candles $ 56.00 Parking Monthly $ 510.00 Building Fund $ 200.00 MYO Regional Retreat $ 3,600.00 Cleveland Treat. Anna went to church every day, and her example is an inspiration to older women to go to church not only on Sundays but also on weekdays. She gave thanks to God. Many losses are associated with the aging process, the death of family and friends, as well as diminished health, strength, energy, and mobility, all which can lead to discouragement and a sour attitude. Anna was not mired in self-pity. She was able to see and count her blessings, was cheerful and upbeat, and had an attitude of gratitude.
