Course Outline Fall Semester 2015 LAL 612 Arabic Lexicography Program Core Compulsory Course Course Teacher: Dr. Elias Atallah Credit Value: 3 Pre-requisites: No pre-requisites Co-requisites: No co-requisites Course Duration: 14 weeks; Semester 1 Total Student Study Time: 126 hours, including 42 contact hours of lectures and seminars. AIMS This course outlines the study of scientific efforts in lexicology and lexicography and sheds light on Arab endeavors in lexicography from an analytical and evaluative perspective. Based on the above, the course aims to fulfil the following aims: Introduce students to the key concepts and terminology of the lexicographical tradition Enable students to study the Arab lexicographical tradition and understand its methods Enable students to evaluate the composition and methodologies of Arab lexicography INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOME In line with the program s efforts to produce graduates qualified to carry out world-class academic research in the fields of linguistics and lexicography using cross-disciplinary methods, the course has the following expected outcomes: 1) Subject-specific skills: Understand the concepts of Arabic lexicography and its study Compare methods of Arab lexicography Interpret issues related to the craft of dictionary making 2) Core academic skills: Deduce the relationship of lexicography with semantics, phonetics, morphology, and syntax The ability to deal with entries from the Doha Historical Dictionary of the Arabic Language Prepare a research proposal in lexicography 3) Personal and key skills: Absorb and benefit from the sources related to the course Follow studies related to Arabic lexicography Employ what they have studied to choose a topic for a research paper or thesis

LEARNING/TEACHING METHODS Lectures presenting the main approaches and conclusions of lexicographical issues Seminars based on the active participation of all students. These will present additional questions and review of class material, as well as add new material to supplement the issues raised in lectures. Workshops to compare and evaluate dictionaries and for training in dictionary making.
