St. Anastasia Catholic Church, Los Angeles, California 16th Sunday in ordinary time July 17th, 2011 God Himself is my help. The Lord upholds my life. I will offer you a willing sacrifice; I will praise your name, O Lord, for its goodness. Psalm 53:6, 8 Reflection on Today s Readings: FOCUS: God is patient with us - When we repent of our sins and turn to the Lord with a contrite heart, He forgives us. He is patient and gentle as He continually provides us with the grace we need to grow in holiness, that we might come to share eternal life in heaven. We must, however, open ourselves to all He offers us. LITURGY OF THE WORD: Today s first reading declares how God s power is matched by His goodness, caring and forgiveness. In the second reading, we hear that the Holy spirit comes to our aid and intercedes for us. In the Gospel, Jesus uses parables to remind us that, no matter how things may look, God s judgment is just and His Kingdom will prevail. FACT OF LIFE "Live Your Lives Beautifully Blessed Mother Teresa used to say this: "When God created us, he created us out of love. There is no other explanation because God is love. And he created us to love and to be loved. If we could remember that all the time, there would be no wars, no violence, no hatred in the world. So beautiful. So simple." That's what it's all about! That's what we're here for. To love and to be loved. It is beautiful. It is simple. If only we would remember this and believe this. Wherever you are "planted" my friends, even if you are only going to be there for a little while, you must love and be loved. That means, like Mother Teresa said, we have to work for a world in which there are no wars, no violence, no hatred. This starts in your own hearts. Keep working every day to be less selfish, to think less about yourself and more about others. Try to do everything for love. Even the little things you do every day. Offer them to God. Say, "God I want to do this for you. I want to do this for my friends, for my neighbor, for my family." My young brothers and sisters, you have a responsibility now to play your part in God's plan for the world. He created this world to be a great city of love and truth, a culture of life. By your love you must build his civilization of love. 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time Ministries in Action July 17th, 2011 16th Sunday of Ordinary Time - Those who are just must be kind, says today s first reading. If our words and deeds are kind and selfless, we will be like the good seed in the Gospel parable and gathered as wheat in the Lord s harvest. See Wisdom 12:19 Get Involved in Parish Safety Programs - Parents and guardians play a key role in the success of parish programs for young people. Parents and guardians who are involved in parish programs and events will be in the best position to protect their own children as well as all the children in the parish community. Involvement and communication are important factors in helping to ensure safe environments for all of our children. Dear Parishioners, I hope you have been enjoying the summer, and that many of you will have some opportunity for some leisure, vacation, or just some plan of relaxing here by the beach. We are doing some remodeling over at the parish school building. As many of you are aware, we are initiating a full day Kindergarten beginning September. Se we are renovating one of the classrooms in order to accommodate all our new kindergarten students in a larger room. I want to thank all those on our committee who assisted with the planning for the changes. 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time Caring for Creation, Caring for the Poor July 17th, 2011 From the Music Director Why is there a new Roman Missal? With the major reform of the liturgy after Vatican Council II came the Mass in the vernacular languages. The Roman Missal reflecting all these changes was first issued in Latin by pope Paul VI in 1970. In translating that text into English, a standard known as "dynamic equivalence" was used which allowed the translators considerable freedom in choosing how best to express in English the meaning of the original Latin text. As a result, the style of the English was, in part, less formal and more conversational and is what we us today at Mass. A third edition of the Missal was announced by Pope John Paul II in the Jubilee Year 2000. Before it was translated into English, a new instruction Liturgiam Authenticam was issued in 2001 by the Congregation for the Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, which outlined the rules and principles of translation into the vernacular languages. This process requires the use of "formal equivalence" in translating so that the English reflects truer translation of the original Latin. As a result, some of the words and phrases that we currently say in English will be changing. For example, when the priest says, "The Lord be with you," our response will be "And with your spirit", a more accurate translation of "Et cum spiritu tuo." Although we will all need to learn the new wording of the responses and prayers, we will regain some of the poetry and scriptural richness expressed in the original Latin. (Next: Why will the new translation sound different?) - Greg Koppenhaver FOR REFLECTION: Op/Ed: The Green Pope s Dilemma - In The Green Pope s Dilemma, a very thoughtful and challenging editorial, Dr. Jeff Mirus, president of CatholicCulture.org, writes that regarding environmental stewardship, the dilemma faced by Pope Benedict is how to communicate a constructive attitude toward both man and nature without having every environmental discussion op-opted by either the pantheists or the technocrats. He says we can resolve, or at least lessen, that dilemma only by being willing to step outside of our prevailing socio-political box in order to base our options on a Catholic understanding of the human person. Mirus observes that Pope Benedict XVI has called people of good will to guard against two errors: either thinking that nature is greater than man, and that nature is raw material to be manipulated. He challenges readers to use their faith rather than political ideology as the primary lens through which they view environmental issues.
