Guided for more than a century by the vision of the Paulist Fathers, we are a diverse and welcoming community dedicated to serving the spiritual needs of the Loop, South Loop and the greater Chicago area. As a unified Church and School community, Old St. Mary s Parish promotes the mission of the Paulist Fathers to welcome those who have been away from the church, to build bridges of respect and collaboration with people of diverse backgrounds and religions, and to promote justice and healing in our society.

Page Two OLD ST. MARY S CHURCH February 24, 2019 PASTOR S WHITE BOARD This week, I invite you to look ahead at a few of our parish Lenten offerings, and to begin to think about what you will be taking on for yourself this Lent. POWER OF MERCY Parish Mission Coming up the weekend of March 10, running through March 13, we will be celebrating a parish mission. Fr. Bob Cary, CSP, will be leading us with his weekend homily. Monday he ll be asking us to consider Forgiveness, on Tuesday he ll investigate Reconciliation and on Wednesday lead our reflections to consider Justice. The main conferences will be each night at 7p.m. Other conferences will be in the mornings. 10 MINUTE CATHOLIC Each of the Sundays of Lent, between the 8 and 11a.m. Masses, we will have 10 minute presentations for the adults of the parish (topics we re hearing are of interest to you). After the brief presentation you will have the opportunity to share with other parishioners and ask follow-up questions. LENTEN GATHERINGS If you are looking for a scripture study with reflection and sharing, there will be several groups meeting to study the Gospel of Luke. Sign-up sheets are in the commons through February 25 (so there is time to order the materials). There are several groups forming up. Add your name, call for questions, discover what is possible through the words of scripture. Now scheduled to run for the 6 weeks of Lent. FRIDAY STATIONS Each Friday Night of Lent (except the week we have Confirmation) the parish will reflect on the Passion of Christ through the stations of the cross, and then invite participants to stay for a soup and bread supper. Two of the nights will have Fish Fries, and one of the nights we hope to have ecumenical guests join us. Why don t you join us each week at 6 PM. Fr. Brad Special note: as some of you have noticed, the Assumption of Mary is curling a bit on the sides. We have been looking for a way to remedy this situation. In the next few weeks you will notice the painting missing from its usual place. Don t worry, it will be back as soon as the frame is attached, sometime during the season of Lent. Just thought you should know. Old St. Mary s Church - 1500 S. Michigan Avenue, Chicago, IL 60605 Chicago s First Catholic Parish - Established in 1833 - The Paulist Fathers serving our parish since October 12, 1903.

Please remember that the Annual Catholic Appeal is much different than a one-time special collection. It is a pledge campaign where you can make a gift payable in installments. The Annual Catholic Appeal theme, Come, Follow Me...and Share the Word, was selected to remind us to continue to answer Jesus call to follow Him in thought, word and deed by providing the necessary contribution to fund ministries and services to share God s love with many others in our Parish and our Archdiocese. Each pledge makes a difference! All parish communities participate in the campaign and the gifts of many enable our parishes, schools, and ministries to deliver needed services, Thank you for your prayerful consideration and generous response. Invita on to Return Last Year s Palm Sunday Palms Lent begins with Ash Wednesday on March 6. In preparation for Lent, we are collecting last year s palm strips. You are invited to return your old palm between now and Sunday, March 3rd, placing it in the marked basket in the Commons. I want to once again thank everyone at Old St. Mary s for your tremendous support throughout the year. Through your monthly Sharing Collection, you indeed make a difference in our little corner of the Archdiocese. Your generosity at Christmas was greatly appreciated by us all. Sharing the gifts with our children at the Christmas Masses is a wonderful experience. The anticipation and joy of each girl and boy is a wonder. Thank you for making it possible. The gift cards for our seniors enable them to add something special to their celebrations. Our client demand for the weekly food pantry continues without let up! At the end of each month, especially, we find it challenging to accommodate the 30 45 families who come for food and clothing. In addition to our own parishioners donations to the food pantry, we are buying commodities almost weekly to help keep the grocery bags filled. Additionally, we are constantly collecting clothing and household items for distribution. Please know that you are always welcome to visit, especially for our 10 AM Mass on Sunday. Thanks to all of you who have visited, dropped off food and clothing and spent time with us. We look forward to being with you in the near future at OSM. Once again, our thanks for all your generosity and support. God bless you and your families. You are all in our prayers each day! In turn we ask your prayers as we begin our journey with Renew My Church in the coming months. In Christ, Father Bob Roll - For the people of St. Bride

Page Six OLD ST. MARY S CHURCH February 24, 2019 We conclude our Black History focus on African-American inventors and their contributions to our everyday life with.alexander Miles and his design for the elevator door. Anyone who s ridden modern elevators has Alexander Miles to thank for the stair alternative s automatic doors. Prior to his design s 1867 patent, riders had to manually open and close two sets of doors when entering and exiting elevator cars. If a passenger happened to forget to close one of the doors, subsequent elevator riders risked a potentially fatal fall down the elevator shaft. Because, as the adage goes, necessity is the mother of invention, Miles created a mechanism that forced both elevator doors to close simultaneously, thus preventing dangerous accidents. and finally Dr. Shirley Jackson Dr. Shirley Jackson is an American physicist who received her Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1973. She was the first African-American woman to earn a doctorate in nuclear physics at MIT. In addition to her lengthy list of academic achievements, she also has an impressive number of inventions under her belt. Her experiments with theoretical physics paved the way for numerous developments in the telecommunication space including the touch-tone telephone, the portable fax, caller ID, call waiting, and the fiber-optic cable. Today, Dr. Shirley Jackson is the 18th president of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York. President of U.S. Bishops and Chairman of Bishop s Committee on Migration Respond to President s Order to Fund Construction of Border Wall In response to President Trump s stated intention to make use of funds previously appropriated for other purposes to fund the construction of a border wall at the U.S./Mexico border, Cardinal Daniel DiNardo of Galveston- Houston and president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), and Bishop Joe S. Vásquez of Austin, chairman of the USCCB Committee on Migration, issued the following joint statement: We are deeply concerned about the President s action to fund the construction of a wall along the U.S./Mexico border, which circumvents the clear intent of Congress to limit funding of a wall. We oppose the use of these funds to further the construction of the wall. The wall first and foremost is a symbol of division and animosity between two friendly countries. We remain steadfast and resolute in the vision articulated by Pope Francis that at this time we need to be building bridges and not walls. The following graduates of Old St. School made the honor roll at De La Salle Institute for the second quarter. Congratulations to all of them on their academic achievements. A B C A I D B M C F P
