A Message From Our Pastor Dear People of St. Patrick, The Responsorial Psalm 19 sung at Mass today is to move us to think about our relationship to God and especially as we begin the Season of Lent: Only in God is my soul at rest; from Him comes my salvation. He only is my rock and my salvation. My stronghold; I shall not be disturbed at all. Trust in Him at all times, O my people! Pour out your hearts before Him. Wednesday, March 5 is Ash Wednesday. We come to Mass, we pray to God during the Mass to help us grow in love for God and to repent and believe in the Gospel. As the cross is traced on our forehead with the blessed palms of last Palm Sunday, the prayer is said, Repent and believe in the Gospel. Ash Wednesday is a day of Fast and Abstinence, no meat to be eaten on Ash Wednesday, on Good Friday and all Fridays during Lent. Rules for Fasting and Abstinence Ash Wednesday, March 5, marks the beginning of Lent, the following regulations regarding fasting and abstinence are observed in the United States: Catholics ages 14 and over are to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and all Fridays of Lent. Individuals between 18 and 59 are also obliged to fast - eat one full meal - on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Eating two smaller meals is permitted to maintain strength, but eating between meals is not. These obligations, however, do not apply to those whose health or ability to work would be seriously affected. Catholics are also encouraged to do penance in other ways, such as prayer, acts of self-denial, almsgiving and works of kindness and compassion. The time of Lent helps us to look at our lives, confess our sins and return to working on overcoming our sins. We are to Fast, Pray and give Almsgiving to the poor. The 40-days of Lent help us to look forward to the joy of Easter and being at peace with God. During Lent, let us all pray for each other and grow in holiness as the people of God. God Bless, Fr. Larry Young Pastor

News ~ Information ~ Events Help for Lent March 5, 2014 Mass and Distribution of Ashes 7:30am ~ 9:00am ~ 7:30pm This is the start of Lent, a day of Fast and Abstinence Tree of Life Honor the memory of a loved one or commemorate life s special events such as weddings, baptisms, first holy communions or confirmations with a custom engraved brass leaf on our beautiful Tree of Life. Your dedication will be displayed permanently in the Chapel of St. Patrick Church. Try to go to daily Mass at 7:30am. Go to pray the Stations of the Cross every Friday at 7:30pm - Praying the Stations lifts our minds to Jesus and what he did for us. Avoid eating meat on the Fridays of Lent. If fasting, realize why we fast. Pray more - Love more - Forgive more! Let the devil know he is not welcome in our lives. Use the Rice Bowls to set aside money to give to the poor. When we set aside the money we would have spent elsewhere, we are helping others. Be nicer to the people in our lives. Donation: $625 per leaf (installment plans available.) For more information, call 510-504-8294 or e-mail gmrobillard@gmail.com Altar Society News Gift Shop The Gift Shop is open today, Sunday, March 2. Thank you for supporting this church fundraiser. We invite you to begin the evening by attending the 5:00pm Mass to honor our Patron Saint. After the Mass, we will celebrate with good food, drink, entertainment, dancing and fellowship. We will also honor this year s Life Time Service Award Recipient. Join the fun to help support the needs of our parish. Tickets are $45/person and are being sold after each of the Masses. Tickets are also available at the parish office. Be sure to buy your tickets early as the Dinner-Dance sells out every year!

Life at St. Patrick I am very pleased to announce the recipients of the 2014 Lifetime Service Award, the 9th award, as well as the first award to be given to a couple - Joyce and Bill Fernando. Joyce and Bill have been parishioners for 51 years. We will have more to say about their many activities and service to the Parish in weeks ahead. Congratulations and thank you for accepting this award from your parish. Nominations are submitted, a committee from the Pastoral Council makes a recommendation to the Pastoral Council. And, on Monday, February 24, the Council unanimously approved Joyce and Bill s Service Award. This weekend our Phase II Confirmation students are away on Retreat. Fr. Larry is with them. We ask that we all pray for our candidates and ask the Holy Spirit to be with all the students, team leaders and chaperones. Next Saturday night, March 8, we change to Daylight Savings Time, we spring ahead one hour. Thank you to everyone who contributed to the 2014 Bishop s Appeal. The envelopes have been turned into the Diocese for processing so I cannot give you a report of how well we did, maybe by next week. If you did not contribute, please do so now. Do you have your tickets for the St. Patrick Dinner-Dance on Saturday, March 15? Hurry, to make sure you are able to celebrate with us. St. Patrick School News Last week, Saint Patrick School completed their first round of testing for the 2014-2015 school year. We are truly blessed with many current families and families who wish to enter our school. Of course, priority is given to our current families to re-register and then if there is an opening, we look to our wait lists. We look for new students who are prepared academically as well as socially compatible with the class they might potentially join. These decisions are not easy and we cannot always accommodate everyone we would like to. We thank our parishioners for all they do to send good families our way!
