~~ Sunday, May 6, 2018 ~~ ~ Sixth Sunday of Easter LOVE ONE ANOTHER In the Gospel for the Sixth Sunday of Easter we are met with an extraordinary challenge: Jesus commands us to love one another as I love you (John 15:12). The letter from John echoes this command. Of course, we are to love those in our family, those we work with, those we like. But the scriptures make clear that we are also to love those we never notice, those we purposely avoid, and even those we are tempted to despise. In this Sunday s selection from the Acts of the Apostles Peter shows us how far God s love extends, and how far our love should extend in response. Peter realizes that God no longer shows partiality to the Jews, sharing divine love exclusively with them. Christ has revealed that God s love extends to all people, and so should ours. copyright J. This is an opportunity to listen to the candidates on the issues we are interested in: Healthcare, Education, Affordable Housing & Homelessness, Transportation and Immigration. If you can attend, there is a sign up sheet on the bulletin board so we ll have an idea on how many St. James parishioners will be there. Why Register In the Church Many people attend Mass here at our church, but are not registered parishioners. It is important to be registered and use your offering envelopes so that if you ever request a letter, whether it s for being a godparent, sponsor, marriage, confirmation, tax statement or any other purpose, we can check our records and see that you attend Mass here. This would also benefit you if you would like to have your child enrolled in next year s Religious Education Program. If you are not registered in the church, we cannot issue or sign any type of letter stating that you are a member of the parish, even if you attend Mass here. If you would like to register and receive offering envelopes, you must complete our registration form. You may also use the parishioner s updated form (green) located on the church lobby shelf for any changes to your address, email or phone number. If you have any questions, please contact the office. May 6, 2018 St. James the Apostle Church Page 5 Pastor s Message Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. James, YOU WERE REMEMBERED EVERY DAY! While on my recent pilgrimage to the Holy Land in Israel, you were all remembered in my prayers each day. In particular, on Tuesday, April 17, I offered my Mass intention for all of the parishioners and friends of St. James the Apostle. This Mass took place at the Franciscan Chapel of the Cenacle, which is not the upper room (no one really knows where the exact upper room is!), but it s the chapel built by the Franciscans of the Holy Land on Mount Zion to commemorate the place of the Last Supper and the enduring gift of Christ s real presence in the Holy Eucharist. The journey to the Holy Land was a great experience. It was a privilege to walk in the land where Jesus walked. But, the thought came to me that anywhere Christ is present in the Eucharist and anywhere his disciples walk in charity is also Holy Land. So, believe it or not, sin city is also the Holy Land! And let s not forget that the whole Earth is all Holy Land, made holy simply because it was created by God for us and entrusted to us for its care. So, try to think of each day as a daily pilgrimage to the Holy Land right where you are. The same Christ who lived, suffered, died and rose in the Holy Land, lives through each one of us in the here and now. Enjoy your daily pilgrimage! INSTALLATION OF BISHOP GEORGE LEO THOMAS On May 15, Bishop George Leo Thomas will be installed as the third Bishop of the Diocese of Las Vegas. The Installation ceremony will take place at 2:00 p.m. at the Shrine of the Most Holy Redeemer. As much as we would like that it be possible for everyone to attend this joyous event, there simply is not enough space at the Shrine. Therefore, each Parish in the Diocese has been given an allotment of tickets to disperse as the Pastors and Administrators deem appropriate. Obviously, this is not an easy task to determine, and I offer an advanced apology for anyone who may have felt overlooked. I thank you for your understanding of our limitations and ask that you keep Bishop Thomas in your prayers. HE S COMING HERE FOR CONFIRMATION! We are privileged to welcome our new Bishop Thomas to our parish on Sunday, May 27 th for our Confirmation Mass at 11AM. Mark your calendars and get a chance to meet him on our own Holy Land! As he s just getting settled here and not able to celebrate all the Confirmations throughout the Diocese, it s an honor that he chose St. James to be one of the parishes where he will. I know that St. James will welcome our new Bishop with great joy and he ll absolutely LOVE IT! DID YOU NOTICE OUR NEW ALTAR SERVER ALBS? Thanks to Norma Savage for recently coordinating the efforts and donations to purchase new albs for our altar servers. The old ones were in pretty bad shape, but now the new ones add a new quality to this ministry. Thanks Norma, and thanks to all who contributed to these new altar server albs! 19 YEARS AGO! On May 8, 1999, I was ordained a priest of God at the Basilica of St. Josaphat in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. 6 years later I would become its pastor, and in 2010 I moved to the Diocese of Las Vegas, a move I definitely see as part of God s plan. Thanks to all of you who support me in my priestly ministry among you. It s been nearly 2 years since I have been with you here at SJTA. These past almost two years have been a transition for all of us. I now have to share my ministry among two wonderful parishes, and you have to share your pastor and associate with another parish family. It s a consequence of the shortage of priests, and I don t know if I ll ever be able to master the challenge of being the pastor of two parishes. I ask for your continued support as I try to minister effectively. I can t be in two places at one time, but I do love both from the bottom of my heart, even though some people can t see that. There are times when it s difficult and exhausting between the two places, but for those of you who understand and accept the limitations of this necessary arrangement I offer my sincere gratitude. I am ever grateful to those who also encourage me to take time for myself, but it seems that when I do take time for myself, some need comes knocking at the door. Sometimes there is just no energy to open the door, and someone is bound to be disappointed. I have to remember that there is already one Savior, and I m certainly not him! Even Jesus had to take time away. I just minister in his name to the best of my ability, with my own limitations. But let me say this: I wouldn t have it any other way! I am blessed by so many wonderful people with whom I minister, and I have experienced the loving presence of Christ in so many of the people of God, the Church! Please know that I love you all, imperfect as I am. So, as I enter my 20th year of priestly ministry I thank you for your continued support and understanding. Together we move forward until the hopeful day we move into God s one parish in eternity! Peace always, Fr. James Michael Jankowski Pastor Parish Pastoral Council Vacancy Parish Pastoral Council has an opening on the council. Please pick up information from the office or call Brenda Dumas for more information. Catholic Stewardship Appeal (CSA) St. James the Apostle s 2018 assessment is $37,342.00. We received pledges in the amount of $20,620 from 48 parishioners and have payments of $8,780.00. We are encouraging our 300 registered households to participate in making this a successful Love your neighbor as yourself appeal. No gift is too small and no gift is too large! Thank you for your prayers and continuous support in meeting these pledges and our obligation to the Diocese.
