Season 5 We are now entering Season 5 of ARISE Together in Christ. During these next six sessions, we will discover that we are called to be Good News for other people. What does it mean to be Good News? The technical term for it is "evangelization," and it simply means bringing the Good News of Jesus Christ into every human situation. All parishioners and friends of the parish are invited to consider dedicating some time this fall to deepening their faith by participating in the ARISE program. This is a commitment of a few hours each week to meet with, pray with and socialize with a group of fellow parishioners. There is a specific program of reflection, discussion, and prayer that has been prepared for the Boston Archdiocese. St.Peter's Lithuanian Parish will be participating along with hundreds of other parishes at the encouragement of Cardinal O'Malley. ARISE groups will be getting together at convenient places and at convenient times. There will be groups in various towns, as well as at the parish. The groups will begin in October and meet for 6 weeks. Talk to your neighbors and/or friends and consider organizing a group. If you are interested in leading or hosting a group, please identify yourself to ARISE committee leader Aldona Lingertat 5-tas sezonas Esame geroji naujiena!

Breakfast will be served.

Dear Parishioners and Extended Family Members of St. Peter Lithuanian Parish, Garbė Jėzui Kristui! Praised be Jesus Christ! As I write you, I do so after having gone through the annual ritual of changing our parish hall back to its normal configuration and returning all the liturgical items upstairs so Mass can be celebrated in the church once again, a sure sign the summer is coming to a close! Parishioners will notice upon their return to the church that we now have six new mahogany doors and two new organs, courtesy of our fire insurance, as well as that all the stained glass windows are now in place. Now if only the protective fiberglass would be installed on the outside, we ll be able to see them! Something I have been less cheerful about are the statistics handed out to all of the pastors of the parishes of the South Boston Collaborative (All the parishes of South Boston plus St. Christopher Parish). This was done during our meeting at the Pastoral Center in Braintree this past June 24. The purpose of the meeting was to make very clear to the pastors that planning for the future must begin and that we are to plan how we will work together. We are to plan in such a way that will maintain and grow the Catholic Church of South Boston. We are to take into account all financial considerations as well as the growing impact of the priest shortage. As I reviewed the statistics, two really jumped out at me. The first is that we are ranked sixth of the seven parishes of the collaborative in using our church building to its capacity, 17%. (people at all Masses / number of Masses / capacity of church) The statistic that was most alarming to me, however, was our drop in Mass attendance. Our parish experienced a 29% decrease in Mass attendance during our Sunday worship from 2006-2009. For whatever their reason may be, the majority of the members of the Greater Boston Lithuanian Community choose not to include the parish and its life as a manner of expressing their nationality, culture, heritage, and traditions, with the exceptions of Christmas and Easter. Because of this drop, our church facility is not as much in demand as it was after we found out the church would not be shuttered by the Archdiocese. It is my job as your pastor to evaluate the present reality and do what is best for the Church as a whole. My role as convener of the South Boston Collaborative adds to this responsibility. In light of the fact that the priest shortage looms larger every month, that our church building is less in demand, that the parish is losing money by opening our church building on Saturdays, I have decided to follow the unanimous recommendation of the Parish Pastoral Council and discontinue the 4 PM Saturday Mass upon the completion of the present calendar year. The last 4 PM Mass will be celebrated Saturday, December 18, 2010. (I am not including Christmas Mass in this decision.) Please continue to pray for our parish and please encourage fellow Lithuanians to express their nationality, culture, and heritage in the context of their God given faith. Sincerely and prayerfully in Christ,
