Page Three: Twenty-Fourth Sunday In Ordinary Time, September 11, 2016 Dear Parishioners: A MESSAGE FROM THE PASTOR S DESK In this Sunday s Gospel from Luke 15: 1-32, tax collectors and sinner were all drawing near to listen to Jesus, but the Pharisees and scribes began to complain; they were judging Jesus for spending time with sinner, as if sinner did not deserve to be saved. On the contrary, Jesus tells us, I have not come to call the righteous to repentance but sinners (Lk 5: 32). His whole ministry is to bring salvation to sinners. The Pharisees and scribes do not get it. That s why Jesus tells them the parable about the lost sheep. Wouldn t any decent shepherd go out to look for his lost sheep? Or a father or mother go out in search for a lost son? Jesus gives another example about a woman who has ten dragmas, which are silver coins; would she not light the lamp and sweep the house searching for that lost coin? Jesus is subtly asking why the Pharisees and scribes are not concerned that there are people who are living in the darkness of their sins, enslaved to that way of life? Jesus is also asking us why we are not concern about people who are lost in the world. What are we doing to bring them to the Savior? The dragma is a silver Greek coin with the image of the emperor on it. Silver is a precious metal, each one of us is precious to God, and we carry in us the image of God because we are created in His image. Since God is Love, His image is Love. We human beings are created to love God and neighbor. If we do not give of ourselves to others in love, our life becomes frustrated, and unfulfilled, because this is how God has made us, to love. That s why it is urgent to bring people into contact with Christ, because to touch Christ is to touch the eternal, to touch God Himself. Saint Mother Theresa understood this. In touching the lives of many poor Indians, the sisters gave these people the experience of being treated as a human being, of being loved by God. - Fr. Basil.
