Dear Partnering Parishioners, Lent is coming it is our spiritual spring training camp! It is Mardi Gras time, you know, Fat Tuesday and all that fun stuff because we know that the next day begins a special and holy season called Lent. This Wednesday, March 6t h is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the penitential season of Lent. There are six weeks of Lent. The final week is called Holy Week, and the last three days are called the Paschal Triduum: Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter. This holy season is penitential in nature. That is why as a Church we intensify our traditional practices through prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Use this holy season to draw closer to the Lord whose love for you is everlasting and whose mercy endures forever. Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving Here are the rules for Fast and Abstinence Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and abstinence from meat All the Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence from meat. Our faith community will again participate in Operation Rice Bowl this Lent. Operation Rice Bowl is the official Lenten program of Catholic Relief Services, and calls Catholics in the United States to reach out in solidarity with the poor around the world through the traditional Lenten practices of prayer, fasting and almsgiving (learning and giving). Operation Rice Bowl helps us to simplify our lifestyle, learn about the challenges faced by the poor each day and give the balance saved through fasting and other sacrifices. By participating in these three activities, we come to understand our call to be a part of one global community. God s Invitation Lent is a season of being invited by God in a deeply personal way. Come back to me, with all of your heart, our Lord beckons. "We will," we respond, but we aren t quite ready yet, our hearts are not prepared. We want to squirm, evade, avoid. Our souls not yet perfect. We are not ready for God to love us. Yes, of course we want to have a deeper relationship with God, we tell ourselves earnestly. And we will.soon. God calls to us again: Come back to me, with all of your heart. Ok, ok, I really will. Just a few more things to do at work. Let me spend a little more time in prayer first. Let me get to Reconciliation. Let me clean my oven, tidy my closets. Sell my yoke of oxen. Check a field I have purchased. Come back to me, with all of your heart. It is an extraordinary invitation to each one of us in a personal, individual way. God invites us to drop the defenses that we hold up between ourselves and God. All God wants is for us to realize that our standards, our way of judging and loving are so very different from God s way, and so much smaller. God offers an entire Lent season, an entire lifetime, of loving us unconditionally, no matter what we have done or how much we think we have hidden from God. From the first day of Lent, the Ash Wednesday readings make God's call to us clear: Return to me with your whole heart. That is the invitation of each day of Lent. Today is the day to accept it Continue Your Prayers Sister MaryAnn Nerney, I.H.M., had back surgery on January 16th and will be out of the office for several weeks. Please keep her and all those who are recovering from surgeries in your prayers.
