Jesus parables reveal the nature of God s relationship with us and how we are to relate to one another. Through his teachings, we can learn how to become better people in our relationships at home, church, work and community. March 2017 Messiah Lutheran Church Page 2 From the Pastor s Desk Why Change the Liturgy? On Transfiguration Sunday, we hid the Alleluia. It s been our tradition to suspend singing or saying this word during Lent s forty days as part of the penitential, reflective character of the season. We then resurrect this word of great praise to God on Easter in celebration of the wondrous work God has done. We also use a different liturgy during Lent. As with using different paraments, changing the liturgy marks the transition from one church season to the next. Liturgies are chosen to model the character of the season. Advent and Lent are times of preparation, so the liturgy has a more reflective, meditative character. The seasons of Christmas and Easter demand a more joyful character, full of praise. Modeling their reflective characters, we kneel around the altar to receive Holy Communion during Advent and Lent. In the same way, we stand in great praise of our crucified and risen Lord to receive the Eucharist all other times. Varying the liturgy helps us think more intentionally about what we re singing, saying and doing. It helps keep us from thoughtlessly going through the motions and keeps things fresh even as we remain rooted in the traditional framework of Gathering, Word, Meal and Sending. See you in worship, Pastor Linda Winkelman ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Souper Bowl of Caring helped change the game ~ As the big game was being played, thousands of people came together to make a difference in their community. Over $6.3 million in cash and food items has been reported so far. Messiah youth collected $167 for the Galva Food Pantry. Thanks to you, the Souper Bowl of Caring continues to #ChangetheGame.
