Ascension of the Lord May 8, 2016
My Dear Friends, As we come close to the end of the Easter Season we celebrate with the Church world-wide the Ascension of Jesus to Heaven. The Gospel relates that after His Ascension, His followers were filled with joy and went into the temple to praise God. This seems like a strange response. I usually feel sad when parting from friends. Since the resurrection of Jesus, His friends had entered into a deeper relationship with Him than they ever had before His suffering, death and resurrection. I hope that our celebration of Easter, and every Sunday is a little Easter by the way, has been a time of growth in our faith and also in our capacity to love. We now know that as God, He is with us always through the Spirit that came at Pentecost. Next week we will hear an account of the descent of the Holy Spirit. It will be read in different languages, reminding us of the Universality of the Church. Each is called to hear eternal truth, usually not through intellectual arguments, and certainly not insults, but through lives lived in the knowledge and love of God made known in Jesus, and humble service. As people sealed with the gift of the Spirit, our ears and hearts need to be finely tuned to the promptings of God s grace revealed through His Church, people of good will and the cries of those in need. This needs a familiarity and comfort with silence, so that our hearing is the authentic voice of the One who banished death. Geoff Woods puts it really well, Our tradition would do the same for us during this season of Ascension and Pentecost. It invites us to ascend with Christ above and beyond the dim of inherited controversy, to attain a vantage point from which we might quietly contemplate or inhale the prospect of a universe pulsating with grace and mutual forgiveness. - from Living the Lectionary Year C. To our Mothers, I wish a very happy day. May this day bring you a greater sense of the wonderful vocation that God has called you to. To our children receiving First Communion and to your families and teachers, may this day deepen your love for God and one another. With every good wish, Fr. Phil
