Brief silence A: Heal & restore your church, O Lord, purchased with the precious blood of your dear Son. Drive from it all partiality & false teaching. Enliven its faith so that, through its words and its works, many may hear the Good News, turn with confidence to Jesus, & receive forgiveness, life and salvation. Lord, in your mercy, A: Help us to never put road blocks in the way of non-christians if they seek to learn more about your forgiveness, healing, & love. And grant that many who do not yet believe, may yearn for the rich morsels of mercy that fall from your table. Lord, in your mercy, A: You are Lord of all the nations; and to you all the rulers of the earth shall bow down and give an account of their deeds. Teach them to act with wisdom and without partiality; to care for the widows and widowers, orphans, and destitute; to seek justice within and peace beyond their borders; and to be examples of integrity, & compassion to their citizens. Lord, in your mercy, A: Protect and guide all in our military, and all who stand in harm s way. Bring them home swiftly, & use their skills, whether here or abroad, to establish the blessings of liberty, justice, and peace. Lord, in your mercy, A: Grant that all who cry to you for help and healing; for forgiveness and restoration; or for guidance and comfort, may find your grace sufficient for their need. Especially we lift before you [NAMES]. Lord, in your mercy, A: Holy and gracious Father, we entrust into your care all who clung to your promises in this life, and whose death we now mourn. Grant us such a sure and confident hope in our Lord Jesus, that our sorrow may be turned to joy. Lord, in your mercy, P: Incline your ear to our prayers, dear Lord; and answer them according to your most gracious and holy will, for the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. C: Amen. Gospel Reading Mark 7:24-37 P: The Holy Gospel According to St. Mark the 7th Chapter. C: Glory to you, O Lord. 24 From there [Jesus] arose and went away to the region of Tyre and Sidon. And he entered a house and did not want anyone to know, yet he could not be hidden. 25 But immediately a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit heard of him and came and fell down at his feet. 26 Now the woman was a Gentile, a Syrophoenician by birth. And she begged him to cast the demon out of her daughter. 27 And he said to her, Let the children be fed first, for it is not right to take the children s bread and throw it to the dogs. 28 But she answered him, Yes, Lord; yet even the dogs under the table eat the children s crumbs. 29 And he said to her, For this statement you may go your way; the demon has left your daughter. 30 And she went home and found the child lying in bed and the demon gone. 31Then he returned from the region of Tyre and went through Sidon to the Sea of Galilee, in the region of the Decapolis. 32 And they brought to him a man who was deaf and had a speech impediment, and they begged him to lay his hand on him. 33 And taking him aside from the crowd privately, he put his fingers into his ears, and after spitting touched his tongue. 34 And looking up to heaven, he sighed and said to him, Ephphatha, that is, Be opened. 35 And his ears were opened, his tongue was released, and he spoke plainly. 36 And Jesus charged them to tell no one. But the more he charged them, the more zealously they proclaimed it. 37 And they were astonished beyond measure, saying, He has done all things well. He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak. Isaiah 35:4-7a Be Strong! Fear Not! 4 Say to those who have an anxious heart, Be strong; fear not! Behold, your God will come with vengeance, with the recompense of God. He will come and save you. 5 Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf unstopped; 6 then shall the lame man leap like a deer, and the tongue of the mute sing for joy. For waters break forth in the wilderness, and streams in the desert; 7a the burning sand shall become a pool, and the thirsty ground springs of water. L: The Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. Psalm 146 L: Praise the LORD! Praise the LORD, O my soul! C: I will praise the LORD as long as I live; I will sing praises to my God while I have my being. L: Put not your trust in princes, in a son of man, in whom there is no salvation. C: When his breath departs, he returns to the earth; on that very day his plans perish. L: Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the LORD his God, C: Who made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, who keeps faith forever; L: Who executes justice for the oppressed, who gives food to the hungry. The LORD sets the prisoners free; C: The LORD opens the eyes of the blind. The LORD lifts up those who are bowed down; the LORD loves the righteous. L: The LORD watches over the sojourners; he upholds the widow and the fatherless, but the way of the wicked he brings to ruin. C: The LORD will reign forever, your God, O Zion, to all generations. Praise the LORD! James 2:1-10, 14-18 Faith Without Works is Dead! 1 My brothers, show no partiality as you hold the faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory. 2 For if a man wearing a gold ring and fine clothing comes into your assembly, and a poor man in shabby clothing also comes in, 3 and if you pay attention to the one who wears the fine clothing and say, You sit here in a good place, while you say to the poor man, You stand over there, or, Sit down at my feet, 4 have you not then made distinctions among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts? 5 Listen, my beloved brothers, has not God chosen those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom, which he has promised to those who love him? 6 But you have dishonored the poor man. Are not the rich the ones who oppress you, and the ones who drag you into court? 7 Are they not the ones who blaspheme the honorable name by which you were called? 8 If you really fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture, You shall love your neighbor as yourself, you are doing well. 9 But if you show partiality, you are committing sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors. 10 For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become guilty of all of it. 14 What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, Go in peace, be warmed and filled, without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? 17 So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. 18 But someone will say, You have faith and I have works. Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. L: The Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. O Son of God, in Galilee, You made the deaf to hear, The mute to speak, the blind to see; O blessed Lord be near. 2. Oh listen to the silent prayer, Of your afflicted ones. Oh bid them cast on you their care; Your grace to them make known. 3. The speechless tongue, the lifeless ear, You can restore O Lord. Your Ephphatha O Savior dear, Can instant help afford. 4. Mean-while to them the listening ear, Of steadfast faith impart, And let Your Word bring light & cheer, To every troubled heart. 5. Then in your promised happy land, Each loss will prove a gain. All myst ries we shall understand, For you will make them plain. O Son of God, in Galilee LBW #426 (Sing to the tune of O God, Our Help in Ages Past LBW #320) 1.
