January 12-18, 2013 MAMBALAM TIMES Page 5 TAMIL CINEMA 75 - A LOOK BACK By RANDOR GUY TAMIL CINEMA AND MUSIC - 42 The tradition of singing in dramas percolated into Tamil cinema, and early Tamil films were indeed all singing affairs. An average Tamil film had as many as 30-40 songs and some even had many more. The more the merrier was the motto! Pavalakodi (1934), which introduced many major talents to Tamil cinema had as many as 50 songs. The composer was Papanasam Sivan. M. K. T. Bhagavathar, S. D. Subbulakshmi (later a noted star), and the sadly neglected filmmaker K. Subramaniam, took their bow in this film. The film proved a hit mainly because of its songs. However, Pavalakodi was not Papanasam Sivan s first film. His debut was in Seetha Kalyanam (1933). Its genesis, or back story, as they say in Hollywood, is interesting. Indeed the name Papanasam Sivan is itself a misnomer. He was neither from Papanasam nor his name was Sivan! His name was Ramaiah and he was an ascetically lean, pious, orthodox Brahmin from Polagam, a small village in Thanjavur district. Though he was born into a well-to-do family, due to quirks of fate, he spent his early years in poverty and left home to live in Trivandrum, (now Thiruvananthapuram), the capital of the maharaja-ruled state Travancore. Here he learnt music under the noted composer Neelakanta Sivan. In deference to his guru, he started calling himself himself Sivan. He visited temples and sacred places in south India and, in inspired moments of sheer ecstasy, he composed songs in Classical Carnatic style in many ragas. After marriage and children, he needed a steady income and he relocated himself in Papanasam, the picturesque small town near Thanjavur. Here he eked out a precarious living, teaching music and as a performing artiste. He composed music for stage plays and conducted bhajans, going round the streets of Papanasam. Hence he came to be known as Papanasam Sivan! In this town he befriended K. Subramaniam who would play a great role in his life soon. Looking for greener pastures, Papanasam Sivan migrated to Madras, the cultural capital of south India then and now. Here he found a Good Samaritan in a Mylapore lawyer, V. Sundaram Iyer. Mylapore had been the strong-hold of successful lawyers, mostly Brahmins, and is to this day a hectic hive of culture with an artistic ambience of its own! Sundaram Iyer became his friend, guide and patron. Sivan taught music to the lawyer s children, the strikingly handsome artistic teenager S. Rajam and his sister Jayalakshmi. The youngest, a lad of six watching it all and absorbing music by mental osmosis, would soon emerge as a multi-faceted genius of music and movies. His name was S. Balachandar, the latterday veena-wizard! Meanwhile, back at Kolhapur, V. Shantaram, one of the greatest filmmakers of India, then making his way in movies with the celebrated Prabhat Pictures, wrote to a Madrasbased movie magazine Sound and Shadow seeking its help to make a Tamil film using the sets, props and all of his Hindi film Sairandhri (1933, India s first film in color). The film had not done well and the company was trying to cut its losses by launching a Tamil film using the same re-usable sets and other materials. Soon the Mylapore lawyer, his children, and members of an amateur drama troupe boarded a train at Madras to Miraj (a railway junction) en route to Kolhapur. Accompanying them was Papanasam Sivan as music composer, blissfully unaware as the train chug-chugged its way, that he was on his way to fame and fortune! In Kolhapur, Sivan composed songs for Seetha Kalyanam. It was his first film and he had no knowledge of film music, orchestration and its nuances. But he knew music! He chose the tunes and melodiesof the songs of Saint Thyagaraja (Telugu) and Purandharadasa (Kannada) and wrote Tamil words using the same ragas, meters and melodies for the film tunes. And lo, the Tamil film tune was born! (To be continued) Long queue outside fair price shops to collect Pongal freebies There was a long queue outside the fair price shop on Kuppiah Street (West Mambalam) to collect the special Pongal gift pack containing 1 kg rice, 1 kg sugar and Rs. 100 in cash offered by Tamilnadu Govt. to ration card holders. A similar queue was seen outside TUCS Shop (Muthurangan Street, T. Nagar). Police personnel were deputed to control the crowds. The sex-carnivores who preyed upon Miss Delhi are now state guests in Tihar Zoo. A couple of them have spilled the beans to enable law to take its course fast and it seems to have whetted the testosterone count of many such animals all over India, according to newspaper reports. It reminds me of the cricket gear where speed demons like Harold Larwood and such lethal bowlers wreaked havoc on the batsmen that made survival kits such as chest guards, steel helmets and steel wool filled hand gloves mandatory. The next best thing to shooting all men above 18 is to prevent the sexy thought of these beasts in heat by making a universal law that girls above 14 should wear what our wise old people of England prescribed during the years of the Crusade, when the men were all out killing the non-christians during the centuries between the 11th and the 13th in Europe to recapture the Holy Land. The men being on the holy mission of killing the enemy, the women at home had to be protected. A great thinker, who missed the Nobel Prize for his magnificent thought by about 7 centuries, devised, for want of any trade name, a protective belt for girls and women known as the Chastity Belt that would be impenetrable and probably that looked like the modern Bikini. It must have been made of iron with pads for the comfort of the wearer and a lock with a key for toilet functions which was probably handed back to the custodian after use. The security bubble burst, it was reported in some fun magazine, when the home guard of a Crusader, who had left his young wife in England, was seen galloping to the European war zone and the surprised warrior was told by him that what he was given was the wrong key! Is nothing safe in this world?, the Crusader exploded and, after killing the home guard, deserted the battle field and returned to his home in England. Anyway it would not be a bad idea for the government to order half a billion Chastity Belts to save our girls from the biped animals on the prowl. OBITUARY T.R. SUBRAMANIAN T.R. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Repair work begins on Mambalam High Road Sir, After a number of reports published in your esteemed paper about the bad condition of Mambalam High Road (the last report was in your issue No. 24 dated Nov. 10-17), there seems to be some action taken by Chennai Corporation to repair the road last week. An earth mover was used to clear the debris and other construction material dumped on the roadside during the construction of Rangarajapuram flyover. I hope that the work will be continued and the road which is in a very bad condition will be re-laid. Encroachments which block the entire stretch of the road from Rangarajapuram railway gate to Duraiswamy subway too need to be removed to make it fully motorable. Once the road is re-laid and encroachments are removed, it can carry a significant amount of traffic away from Usman Road. I request the authorities to continue the good work and rid Mambalam High Road of encroachments and re-lay it. Sriram, 90, Bazullah Road, T.Nagar, Ph: 98407 73410. Speed breakers needed on Motilal Street Sir, We thank Chennai Corporation for re-laying Motilal Street, T. Nagar after a long time. However 2-wheelers and autorickshaws, which earlier used to avoid the road owing to its bad condition, have started to use it as a thoroughfare and drive on it at a high speed. Since it is a safety hazard to both motorists and pedestrians, we request the authorities to install multiple speed breakers on the road to slow down the drivers. - President, Motilal Street Residents Welfare Association (31, Motilal Street, T. Nagar).
