February 24, 2019 4 From the Pastor s Desk Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. (Lk. 6:36) This week s readings speak about the compassion, mercy and love of God. We who have received God s life and Spirit in Baptism are encouraged to express that love and forgiveness in our daily thoughts, words and actions. In the first reading, David showed his kindheartedness by the way he treated his enemy, King Saul, who was jealous of David s growing popularity. Thus, King Saul wanted to kill him. Although David had the opportunity to kill Saul when he and his men came upon Saul asleep in a cave, David chose to respect God s anointed king by not taking revenge. David s heroic act was a beautiful example of forgiving one s enemies. The Responsorial Psalm, Psalm 103, is one of my favorite psalms. King David (who forgives King Saul in the first reading) reminds us of God s mercy and compassion. As a father has compassion on his children, the Lord has likewise compassion on us. He pardons all your iniquities and heals all your ills. (Ps. 103:3) The Lord is indeed kind and merciful! Today s Gospel reading (Luke 6:27-38) is a continuation of the teaching that began in last Sunday's Gospel. We continue to hear Jesus' Sermon on the Plain. St. Luke gives us Jesus revolutionary moral teaching about correct choices in our human relationships, with very challenging and rather difficult exhortations: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. Jesus understands our weaknesses and the natural feelings of irritation, anger and sometimes even revenge when we are provoked. However, we are called to be like Christ: to live like Him, to forgive like Him, to love like Him. We ll never be able to do all these without God s grace. The good news is that by our baptism, we now share in the life and love of God. God s life in us enables us to rise above our human condition, lead to a profound conversion, and grow in the likeness of Christ. Moreover, Christ assures us that... My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness... (2 Cor.12:9) Let us pray that our hearts might truly be open to forgive one another, especially those who have hurt us. May God give us strength to conquer evil with good! God bless you! Fr. John Francis

seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time RELIGIOUS EDUCATION CORNER 5 Sister Alice Michael, S.U.S.C. - Director of Faith Formation Contact Information 718 591-6536 For the next several weeks, we will be sharing some points that may help all of us. For the next several weeks, we will dedicate this column to some points that may enable all of us to grow in our understanding of what really happens each time that Mass is celebrated. Each Saturday evening or Sunday, we come to Mass; perform prayers and rituals that many of us have known since our childhood. We stand, sit, and kneel. We recite Holy, Holy, Holy and Lamb of God, and Thanks be to God, but what do all these prayers and rituals mean? We know them well on the one hand, but do we really understand the significance of all that we saying and doing in the liturgy of the Mass? The Mass has been the very center of Christian worship since the time of the apostles. It is the celebration of the Eucharist that Jesus instituted at the Last Supper. So important is the Mass that Vatican II (1962-1965) called it the source and summit of the Christian life. On one hand, our entire lives are directed toward Mass; and on the other hand, as Christians we find the spiritual strength, guidance, and support we need to live our regular daily lives from the Mass. This will be continued next week. Remember to clear your calendar to take part of our Parish Mission in English on March 25th, 26th and 27th at 7pm in the Church? God Bless You! Sister Alice Michael, S.U.S.C. Hermana Alice Michael, S.U.S.C. Directora de Formación de Fe ATTENTION PLEASE ASH WEDNESDAY and GOOD FRIDAY Are days of FASTING (one full meal and two small ones For those from ages 18-59) and ABSTINENCE (no meat for those age 14 and older). The Fridays of Lent are also days of abstinence from meat. March 6, 2019 (Miércoles de Ceniza) Ash Wednesday Mass & Service Schedule: MASS SERVICE 7:30 am 8:45 am 12:05 pm 10:00 am 7:30 pm 4:00 pm
