Dear Parents, The first few days of school are all about students and teachers getting to know each other, the establishment of classroom and school wide routines and procedures, and nurturing the seeds of learning and friendship that will flourish over the school year into fruits of success. B H, all of these were evident on the first day of school and this morning as I made the rounds of the classrooms and met with groups of students at assemblies. At our teacher in-service sessions earlier this week, I challenged our teachers to cultivate and build upon the excitement and enthusiasm students display on the first day of school so that
these positive feelings are still apparent in the month of June. I also asked them to pay attention to those students who don t seem so excited about school and to think about how to provide these students with meaningful learning activities that are within their range of competency. It is my belief that when students are engaged in such activities, they feel good about themselves and what they are doing, look forward to coming to school and have no reason to act out. Another highlight of our in-service sessions was a workshop that explored Executive Functioning Disorder. This workshop was presented by Cyle Feingold, Founder and CEO of Results Learning. Mr. Feingold walked us through a deeper understanding of EFD and strategies to help students contend with this issue. While these strategies were specifically designed to help students with EFD, they are great for all students (and adults). The buzz generated by this workshop was extremely positive and many of our teachers will be implementing these strategies in their classroom as the year begins. One of the things I missed most during summer vacation was the sound of students in the building. B H, that sound is back in Hillel and I couldn t be happier. As I visit classrooms each day to blow the Shofar I am greeted by the eager, smiling faces of your children. This year I recognize the vast majority of those faces and I hope to soon recognize every one of them. My Bracha to you as we start the year is that each of our children maximize his/her own unique academic, social and emotional potential to its fullest throughout this year and beyond! I wish you a great school year and a wonderful Shabbos! Rabbi Yisroel Goldbaum Schedule Reminder Hillel Updates No school for boys, this Sunday, Sept. 3.
