10 Principles of Arya Samaj 1. God is the primary source of all true knowledge and all that is known by its means.(at the beginning of creation, nearly 2 Billion years ago, God gave the knowledge of 4 Vedas to four learned Rishis named Agni, Vayu, Aditya and Angira. Four Vedas called Rigved, Yajurved, Samved and Atharva Ved contain all true knowledge, spiritual and scientific, known to the world.) 2. God is existent, intelligent and blissful. He is formless, omnipotent, just, merciful, unborn, infinite, invariable (unchangeable), having no beginning, matchless (unparalleled), the support of all, the master of all, omnipresent, omniscient, ever young (imperishable), immortal, fearless, eternal, holy and creator of universe. To him alone worship is due. 3. Vedas are the scripture of all true knowledge. It is paramount duty of all Aryan to read them, teach and recite them to others. 4. All human beings should always be ready to accept the truth and give up untruth. 5. All our actions should be according to the principles of Dharma i.e. after differentiating right from wrong. 6. The primary aim of Arya Samaj is to do good to the human beings of whole world i.e. to its physical, spiritual and social welfare. 7. All human beings ought to be treated with love, justice and according to their merits as dictated by Dharma. 8. We should all promote knowledge (Vidya) and dispel ignorance (Avidya). 9. One should not be content with one's own welfare alone but should look for one's welfare in the welfare of all others. 10. In matters which affect the well being of all people an individual should subordinate any personal rights that are in conflict with the wishes of the majority. In matters that affect him/her alone he/she is free to exercise his/her human rights. Page 3

Let us Offer our Oblation for the Nation by Krishan Chopra अभ र यज ञ अभ रग न रभ : स म अभ ररन द र: अभ र ह व श : प त र थ स न द र व ध म ग न ह त र इद हव : अथ य द ६.९७.१ Abhibhuryajno abhibhuragnir abhibhuh somo abhibhurindrah l abhyaham visvah prtna yathasanyeva vidhemagnihotra idam havih ll Meaning in Text Order Abhibhuh = defeats the enemies Yajna = the performer of selfless actions Abhibhuh= defeats the enemies Agni = the king of earth Abhibhuh = defeats enemies Somah = the king of mid space Abhbhuh = defeats the enemies Indarah = sun is the king of upper region Aham = I Visvah = all Prtna = all the forces of enemy Yatha = as Asani = may defeat Eva = like Vidhema = dedicate Agnihotrah = the performer of yajna Idam = this Havih = oblation Page 4 Athrva 6.97.1

Meaning May the creative spirit of Yajna destroy all the destructive elements in our nation as the Soma, Agni and Indra defeat all the vicious elements. May I offer my oblation to eradicate all evil elements in society. Contemplation Yajna is a practical movement to defeat the selfish elements in society. Every act which is performed with selfless intention is called Yajna. Victory and defeat, creation and destruction go hand in hand. Without the defeat of the selfish elements in society and without selfish notions creative action is not possible. Therefore Yajna defeats such elements. The performer of yajna defeats the evil elements in society. Yajna develops the spirit of advancement. The spirit of Yajna generates enthusiasm, devotion, zeal and exaltation of the soul. Agni is the king of earth which with its light encourages us and destroys the difficulties of our path. Som, the moon, is the king of mid space, which defeats our anxiety and apprehensions with its coolness. Indra, the sun is the king of the planetary region. It defeats ignorance, disease and laziness with its golden rays. May those citizens of the nation become victorious when they are able to defeat enemies and selfish entities. Let us perform Yajna and may we offer our oblation of sacrifice for the sake of our nation. Those who perform daily Yajna, it is not difficult for them to offer oblation for the nation. The spirit of yajna is in every drop of our blood. If the nation has such people who can offer oblations for the sake of the nation, that nation cannot be defeated. If this spirit of oblation persists in our mind then it is certain the army of enemies will certainly meet with defeat. Not only will we be able to defeat external enemies but also internal ones. It is also important to offer our oblation of contribution for the comprehensive progress and advancement of our nation. O builder of nation! It is your duty to acknowledge our oblation for the sake of nation. This mantra teaches usrastra devo bhava be a devotee of nation. Page 5

SACRAMENT (SANSKAR) जन द म ज र त श र:, स स क र द दव ज उच र त म स म तत Janmana Jayate Shudrah Sanskarad dvij Uchyate Manusmriti Maharaj Manu will always be remembered and revered for his services to propagate and enhance the Vedic knowledge and Vedic values to the human kind. To make the characters of human beings healthy, comfortable and pleasant so that their lives be healthy, happy and prosperous Maharaj Manu explained the importance of teachings of Vedas at first and encouraged the human beings to follow these teachings in their lives. Among the modalities of Yajna, Yog, Knowledge and Deed the modality of Sacrament is the most important. The sacraments, which are totally based on the teachings of Vedas, bring human life to its total fulfilment. The modality of Sacraments (Sanskars) is in itself a practical ground where human values are developed and nurtured. The above declaration made by Maharaj Manu means All human beings are born as Shudra ( a member of the fourth of the four original classes or castes in the traditional hierarchical set-up of Hindu society) from their mothers womb i.e without knowledge and skills. With the knowledge of Sacraments, imparted by teachers, human beings are reborn again. Shudra means illiterate and he/she survives and earns livelihood in this world by serving members of the community. Human beings who acquire knowledge and skills from their teachers and become literate and cultured earn their living by becoming Brahman (Learned), Warrior or a business man or woman. Page 8

According to Vedas a human being becomes a Brahman who has knowledge of Vedas, a Warrior (Trisha) who posses knowledge of war and weapons etc, a business man/woman (Vaiysya) who posses knowledge of trade and commerce or a servant (Shudra) who serves the members of the society. Maharaj Manu supports this classification of caste system based on the teachings of Vedas. All human beings are born as servants. The Sacraments (Sanskars) imparted on human beings separate them from animals. This is also known as Dharma (a way of life). A human being without any sacrament is like an animal. This is why it is very important for all human beings to be brought up with different sacraments at various stages of their lives. To eat food, sleep, to be fearful and produce siblings and children are same in humans and animals. It is because of sacraments, given to human beings, a human being is different from an animal. It is Sacraments which develop a way of life (Dharma) in human beings. There are 16 Sacraments (Sanskars) to be ordained (given) to all human beings. Out of these sixteen three sacraments are given to the child while developing in mother's womb and thirteen sacraments after the birth of the child. The aims of these three sacraments are as following. 1. The soul should always stay pure and best. 2. The soul should be protected from bad elements. 3. Before and after the birth of a child the soul in his/her body should grow and develop with good qualities as required for a knowledgable, skilful, intelligent, polite and courteous human being. These qualities will be acquired only with help of sixteen Sacraments imparted to the soul of a human being. Page 9

According to learned Rishis the names of sixteen Sacraments are as following. 1. Garbhadan Impregnation (Conception) 2. Punswan For stability of the conceived foetus 3. Simantonnayan For healthy growth of the foetus in mother's womb 4. Jatkarma Birth Ceremony 5. Namkaran Naming ceremony 6. Nishkraman Before taking child outside house 7. Annaprashan Before feeding solid food to the child 8. Mundan Shaving of scalp hair 9. Karnavedh Piercing of ears 10. Upnayan Before child starts School education 11. Vedarambha Before start of University education 12. Samavartatan Graduation ceremony 13. Vivah Marriage ceremony 14. Vanprastha Abandoned worldly things 15. Sanyas Renunciation of world 16. Antyesti Cremation Ceremony Page 10

It is important to perform these sacraments at different stages in life, as written in Sanskar Vidhi book by Maharishi Dayanand Saraswati, in order to live a healthy, happy, prosperous and contended life. These sacraments give a disciplined and cultured life to human beings. As gold is melted in a furnace in order to become pure similarly human beings become great with help of Sacraments. The founder of Arya Samaj Maharishi Dayanand Saraswati wrote a book named Sanskar Vidhi based on the knowledge and teachings of God gifted Vedas and traditionally followed for generations in order to preserve sixteen Sacraments for the well being of human beings. The readers are requested to read 'Sanskar Vidhi written by Maharishi Dayanand Saraswati. The higher education is good thing but a good quality education is even better. Here a good quality education means an education based on the knowledge of sixteen sacraments. These Sacraments help to develop a healthy mind, intellect, personality and well manners in a human being. These qualities are important for a human being to live a healthy, happy, contended and a prosperous life. These Sacraments bring the above qualities to humans, their families, society and the nation. By performing and following these Sacraments will give us good children who will make our lives happy as well. Written by Acharya ji Dr Umesh Yadav in Hindi and Translated by Dr Narendra Kumar in English Page 11
