KNOLLWOOD AT WORSHIP THE SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST Sunday, September 20, 2015 10:55 a.m. www.knollwood.org To those who feel the need of light; to those who find doubts and fears in their hearts; to those who need courage for their daily tasks; to those who feel lonely and friendless; to those who wish to give service; to all who, in faith, will support and involve themselves to the limit of their ability in the work of the Kingdom of God which this church undertakes; to all who want rest, peace, and happiness--this church invites you to the fellowship of Jesus.

KNOLLWOOD AT WORSHIP GATHERING FOR WORSHIP Please silence all electronic devices. Thank you! THE CHIMES Three chimes are sounded, awakening us to the presence of God, alerting us to the voice of Christ, centering us in the embrace of the Spirit. As we gather, we present ourselves as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is our spiritual worship. THE OPENING SENTENCE... Kenneth A. Wilson One: The Lord be with you. All: And also with you. THE PRELUDE Blessed Jesu, At Thy Word... Johann Sebastian Bach Lauren Winkelman, organ THE CHORAL INTROIT Open My Eyes, That I May See... Clara H. Scott The Chapel Choir; Charlotte Brown, Director [Text may be followed at No. 557 in the hymnal.] THE CALL TO WORSHIP... Lucrecia Norman One: This is the day that the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it. All: Like Miriam, let us sing with gladness, for our God triumphs over evil and oppression. One: Like Hannah, let us pray with grateful hearts, for the Lord our God hears our prayer. All: Like Jacob, let us wrestle with God, for out of such struggles new faith is born. One: Like Abraham, let us respond to God s calling, for in faith s journey we find our lives. All: We gather to hear the stories of God's people, for in them we hear our story as well. One: We gather to hear the story of the Christ in whom we find our life and our light and whose love binds our very being together. All: Like the disciples, may we follow this Christ in our own stumbling ways as he teaches us, challenges us and leads us in the way of life. ~Peggy Haymes, adapted from Be Thou Present THE INVOCATION AND THE LORD S PRAYER... Lucrecia Norman *THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN OF PRAISE, NO. 108 Come Christians, Join to Sing...MADRID [The Chapel and Chancel Choirs will sing the Alleluia, Amen, on stanzas 1 & 2.] CONFESSING OUR NEED FOR FORGIVENESS THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION (Unison)... Bob Setzer, Jr. Eternal God, in whom we live and move and have our being, whose face is hidden from us by our sins, and whose mercy we forget in the blindness of our hearts: * Those who are able will stand. Ushers will seat those waiting. Hearing aids and large print hymns are available from the ushers. 2

cleanse us from all our offenses, and deliver us from proud thoughts and vain desires, that with reverent and humble hearts we may draw near to you, confessing our faults, confiding in your grace, and finding in you our refuge and strength; through Jesus Christ your Son. ~Book of Common Worship THE SILENT CONFESSION THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON LISTENING FOR GOD S WORD THE OLD TESTAMENT LESSON: Psalm 119:9-16... Worship Care for preschool and kindergarten is offered weekly. THE CHILDREN S BIBLE PRESENTATION...Amine Seifert, Bob Setzer, Jr. One: Congregation, keep the Word of God in your heart. Repeat scripture verses to our children and talk about them when you are at home and when you are away, when you lie down and when you rise. (adapted from Deuteronomy 6:7-9) All: We will keep these words in our hearts and repeat them for the love of God and for the love of our children. One: Children, treasure the Word of God that you will more clearly know the call of God in your life. (adapted from Psalm 119) Children: We will love and treasure the Word of God. One: All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching and training in righteousness, so that everyone who belongs to God may be equipped for every good work. (adapted from 2 Timothy 3:16-17) All: We will model how God s Word equips us for every good work. One: May God love and guide these children through these Bibles, with our love, and by all the ways that God reveals God s call to us. All: Amen and Amen. 3

TO OUR GUESTS We extend to you a sincere welcome and the hope that you will find your worship experience meaningful. You are invited to the narthex for a brief time of fellowship following worship where you can meet church members and clergy, and learn more about this congregation. We would ask that you record your visit by filling out the friendship pad in the pew; email addresses are especially helpful. To learn more about Knollwood Baptist Church, find us online at www.knollwood.org. You can also receive our newsletter and email announcements by emailing colleen@knollwood.org, or just call the church office, 725-1343. Sunday School at Knollwood begins at 9:45 a.m. KBC WELCOMING STATEMENT Knollwood Baptist Church is an inviting, inclusive family of faith open to all persons, whatever their race, gender, socioeconomic status, special needs, or sexual orientation, who want to walk in the way of Jesus. ABOUT OUR WORSHIP Bibles will be presented to Knollwood Baptist Church s children this morning. Recipients are: Reid Adams, Sarah Adams, Ephraim Causby, Adric Ebert, Hugh Fitzgerald, Jillian Fowler, Henry Jamison, Aaron Neiberg, Frank O'Neill, and Walter Stinehelfer (first grade); Palmer Francis, Scott Johnson, Kira Madan, Gabriel Oakley, Abby Schwartz, Kate Seifert, Emma Jane Walton, and Kate Yarbrough (second grade); and Anderson Beliveau, Colette Causby, Austin Fowler, Lincoln Jackson, Mead Maguire, Claudia Stinehelfer, and Grace Tooze (third grade). This morning s Call to Worship and the text for the Hymn of Devotion, Hands of Blessing, were written by Knollwood member Peggy Haymes. Christine Lafferty is Communications Director of Project AMOS, a Christian non-profit organization in Nicaragua that exists to improve the health of impoverished communities by working alongside them in health, education and development. Dr. Bob, Mark Jensen, and Beth Fields visited with Project AMOS this summer. Learn more about Project AMOS at www.amoshealth.org. Please silence all electronic devices. Thank you! Printed music used by permission of OneLicense.net # A-724940. FLOWERS The flowers in the sanctuary are given to the glory of God and in memory of Thelma Huff given by her daughter, Glenna. ABOUT OUR BANNERS The way is a familiar biblical theme encompassing such truths as the way of the Lord (Isaiah 40:3), Jesus as the way (John 14:6), and the way as a description of Christian discipleship (Acts 9:2). The words on the banner point to the movements of faith: Longing for God that impels us forward in the spiritual journey; Learning the way of the Scriptures and the way of Jesus; Loving as our love for God and our neighbors deepens; and Living as we live out of Christian faith and witness in the world. The colors of the banner emphasize green for ordinary time, the period in the church year between Pentecost and Advent. The artist who designed and painted the banners is our own Bambi Setzer. For the last few years, a number of couples have discovered the benefits of focusing a little time each month on improving their marriage relationship. This information session will provide a chance for new couples who are curious about these groups to find out more about them (Downstairs, Noffsinger Youth Bldg). We also need experienced, happily married couples, to join these groups as role models for others. Couples who have experienced the growth potential of these groups at KBC will be present to answer questions along with the leaders, Chuck and Reneé Hinson. There is no obligation to join one of 7

the new groups starting up in October if you just want to join us for this one event in September. Links to more information and to frequently asked questions can be found on the church website. We hope to see you there. ~Chuck and Reneé Hinson SUNDAYS, SEPT. 27 THROUGH OCT. 18 - CREATIVE AGING, 9:30-10:30 A.M. In his book The Longevity Revolution: As Boomers Become Elders, Theodore Roszak shows that for the first time in human evolution we can, with reasonable expectations, live beyond 65 years in the USA and even hope for another decade or even decades to age. What then will we do and who will we become with this gift of expanded generative years? Co-led by Maurice Briggs and Ben Wagener, this Sunday morning elective series on Creative Aging is grounded on the premise that faith practices and the aging process are actually made for each other, resulting in enrichment and empowerment. We anticipate: becoming more oriented to the dynamics of aging; assessing existing abilities and strength in coping with the aging challenges; experiencing being compassionately understood as a person of faith who is aging. As a resource, we will rely on Creative Aging by Marjory Bankson. The class is limited to 12 adults who are 50 years and older. Sign-up by emailing frontdesk@knollwood.org. MONDAY MEN MEET Monday Morning Men 7 a.m., at the Allman Spry offices, top floor, 380 Knollwood St. For information, contact Chip Mims (cpmims3@gmail.com).
