"WON'T A GOOD MORAL LIFE GET ME TO HEAVEN?" Scripture: Luke 18: 17-'lj ~ INTRO: WE KNOW THAT THE BIBLE SAYS THAT "FOR NICATORS, IDOLATORS, ADULTERERS, THE EFFIMI NATE, THIEVES, THE COVETOUS, DRUNKARDS, EXTOR TIONERS SHALL NOT INHERIT THE KINGDOM OF GOD" (I COR. 6:9). BUT WHAT ABOUT A GOOD PERSON? "WONT'T A GOOD MORAL LIFE GET ME TO HEAVEN?" THIS IS A QUESTION WE MUST ANSWER. HAVE YOU EVER KNOWN A TRULY GOOD PERSON WHO WAS NOT A CHRISTIAN? SURE YOU HAVE. AND MANY OF THEM HAVE "OUTLINED" SOME CHRISTIANS! THAT PERSON HAS EVERY RIGHT TO ASK, "WON'T A GOOD MORAL LIFE GET ME TO HEAVEN?" THIS IS THE QUESTION THE RICH YOUNG RULER ASKED CHRIST. " '' WHAT SHALL I @ TO INHERIT ETERNAL LIFE?" "WON'T A GOOD MORAL LIFE GET ME TO HEAVEN?" "I HAVE KEPT ALL OF THE CQM MANDMENTS FROM MY <,GUTH UP. " JESUS LOVED THE YOUNG MAN THE MOMENT HE SAW HIM. HE WAS NOT A DIFFICULT PERSON TO LOVE. THERE WERE MANY: RIGHT THINGS ABOUT HIM: 1. COURAGE - Nicodemus, another ruler, came at first to Jesus by night - for fear of the Jews. This ruler came in broad daylight, when the road was thronged with people going to the Passover. In the sight of them all, he ran up to Christ and knelt before Him; and, in their hearing, addressed the Nazarene as 'Good Master.' In the face of class-prejudice, this man came up to Jesus who had no social and material status and assumed the role of a learner. 2. IDEALISM - The young man had a great and noble purpose, and could express it clearly. _,_

far as he knew, he was prepared to do anything in his power to attain the h i ghest ends. 3. SINCERITY - He came in the sincerity of the I i Psalmist: "Sea. ch me, O God, and know my heart: Try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there by any way of wickedness in me, And lead me in the way everlasting." - -NOTE: He wa s a man o f o ~ a e, and ~sincerity. But in the midst of all these RIGHT things some WRONG t hings begin to happen. I. HE HAD THE WRONG ATTITUDE ' --vs. 1 7 --NOTE: Apparently Christ anticipated the encounter he was about t o hav~ with this bright -CA- etected a s ' rit of self-trust. nd so to set the stage Christ concludes his encounter with the little children by saying, "Whosoever shall not receive... (vs. 1 7) --NOTE: How does a li tle child receive R request anything? He comes in "the spirit of humility and trust --- Humility, never even stopping to consider his worth or merit; and trust, believing in the love and generosity of another. -? -

_r. ft Ff A.])_ Tff --ILLUS: When we are young we never d oubt where the ~ t mea is to come from, or where our lothe will be found. We go out ~ certain that the home will be there when we return, and all things ready f or our comfort. When we go o n a ~ur ne7 we never doubt that the fare will be paid, and t hat our parents know the way and will take u s safely there. >,.The child's trust in his parents is absoiute - as our should be in ~ ur great Father. ~ But-this man's attitude was one of trust self and Er ide in his works :a~ "' 6.? _. 'Ev.,- w M+ /1'1 *'f>f- '.'.I. - II. HE ASKED THE WRONG QUESTION --vs. 18 "What sha"1.l I DO...?" - -NOTE: Without question this was a good man. Yet he felt within his heart and s o ul that there was something lacking in his life. ut in his effort to fill that void he asked the wrong question. His question grew out of thinking that Morality & Spirituality are synonymous. --NOTE : ~rality Is Not Spirituality Wby do all men, regardless of how good they are, need to be born again spiritually? Because morality is not spirituality. We need to define some terms. What Is Morality? orality means right relations with your fellow man. What Is Spirituality? Spirituality means right relations with God. > Not every moral man is right with God. here are many good, moral people atheist by r eligi o us professio n) who wouldn't consider breaking the law o r h urti ng one's neighbor. -3-

Jllftfii1iii~+~ 1ngersoll, a. celebrated atheist century ago, was a very moral man. Indeed 7 he was philanthropist and humanitarian. ">so, being right with men doesn't make you right with God. However, every spiritual man will be a m? rai _~an!:..u. ~~~ ~ _ ~ This rich young '-~~o_o illustration of a moral person right with God. He asked the wrong question, "What shall..,-~l'.!kf I do... " For Paul reminds us, that it is,t../ 0 09-, "Not by works of righteousness which we have, ~ oo DONE, but according to His mercy he saved us." (Titus 3:51). III. E TRUSTED IN THE WRONG THING --verses 20-21 --NOTE: This man made a claim that neither you nor I would dare make. We have not kept all of God's Commandments from our youth up and we know it -- and so do those who know us best. The young ruler is not flaunting his religion, he is not putting his "piety on parade." Rather he is si;ating what, he feels in his heart to be true. > Later Chr;ft leads him to realize that he really has not kept all the law. Nevertheless, he must have been head and shoulders above most of us even t o dare to make this claim. His error was not in attempting to keep the law (for this is commendable). His error is in his t.=a!:. r~u...i.u::.1-...i.... i.6.l..w...l,,4.jjll,,l,.l.~.1..1..1,,~..i;;... - - NOTE Christ's response reveals that a moral life can't save you because God's stanqaril, of riqhteousness i s too hi~h- I -4-

In other words, God's standard of Morality is Jesus Christ. How goo _is good enouah to please God? Suppose you commit only one sin a week in thought or deed. (Remember your measuring rod is the Ten Commandments as lived and taught by Jesus!) That ' s fifty-two sins a year. If you live a normal lifetime of seventy years, you will hav e committed 3,640 sins! Can you imagine if you had committed 3,640 crimes and were finally caught and tried? What do you think the verdict would be? Guilty or innocent? Why, the judge would lock you up and throw away the key! Can ~ou see h..ow yo r righteousness must Iook to a ti o the Judge of heaven and earth? Romans 3:10 says it well: "There is none righteous, no, not one" (KJV). --NOTE: He Trusted In The Wro ng Thing -- He trusted in his morality and his good works. But in one of the fragments which remain there is an account of this incident which gives us a clue. "The rich man said to Jesus, 'Master, what good thing must I do really to live?' Jesus said to him, 'Man, o bey the law and the prohets.' He said, ' I have done so.' Jesus said to him, 'Go, sell all that you possess, distribute i~ among the poor, and come, follow me!' The rich man began to scratch his head because he did not like this command. The Lord said t o him, 'Why do you say that you have obeyed the law and the prophets? For it is written in the law, "You must love your neighbour as yourself," and look you - there are many brothers of yours, sons of Abraham, who are dying o f hunger, a nd your house ~ full of many good things, and not one single thing goes o ut o f it t o them.' n he discovered that membership in the Kingdom of Heaven required total commitment to Christ on earth, he made the wrong decision, "and went away i J-:t:=i:eved." He Had The Wrong Attitude vs. 17 > Christ detected in him a spirit of self-trust > The example of a little child is to be followed II. He Asked The Wrong Question vs. 18 "What shall I DO? " > Morality is not spirituality > Morality means right relations with your fellow man > Spirituality means right relations with God > He is an example of a moral person who is not right with God III. He Trusted In The Wrong Thing vss. 20-21 > He made a claim we not dare make - "All these I have kept" > He is not flaunting his religion > He is stating what he feels in his heart to be true > God' s standard of morality Jesus Christ -- Who is perfect? One who is as good a Jesus! IV. He Made The Wrong Decision vss. 22-23 > Anytime you walk away from Christ, that is a wrong decision because you are headed in the wrong direction > "He went away sorrowfully" BUT: V.
